I think enforcing laws on sedition would be sufficient. It was good enough for Omar Abdel-Rahman and white supremicists.

There is a legal precedent -- telling people that an eternal award awaits them for mass murder is not protected speech.

There is also an extrajudicial precedent: an American citizen can be placed on the kill list at any given time.

And Omar was caught with a lot of evidence indicating an active plot, not just words.

The actual USC citation does not seem to be amenable to prosecuting "hate" in all its broad categories.

    ^That sounds fairly specific.

What DD is saying, funnily enough, strikes more at the reality of what would have more of a chance of happening. I don't think sedition charges would apply to people who were not actively plotting specific attacks against the United States. If he wants to implement kill lists, well, he's only targeting criterion away from active USG policy (thanks Obama, as they say).

As for monitoring, the NYPD did just that with mostly Muslim neighbourhoods, until the federal court system smacked them down.

Not saying these things can't be reevaluated--but there is a framework for said reevaluation, and principles that should safeguarded with that framework.

The shooter has apparently been confirmed as Omar Maheen of Fort Pierce, Florida. He appears to a registered Democrat, which would mean he is not a recent immigrant.

I would at least like to see any religious leader who makes public statements about the virtues of killing anyone to please God put under the scrutiny by law enforcement.

I think firearm bans are a waste of time and political suicide besides. Guns don't kill people nearly as efficiently as gullible people who think they are doing God's work do.

Conservatives tend to lean on mental health as the root cause of shooting attacks -- I would agree but only if someone adds psychotic religious delusion into the next DSM and only if funding for the mentally ill was taken seriously. Instead of locking up poor people who smoke mar1juana, we should be locking up the nutters of God. I realize that is probably inclusive of many in high positions within the Texas state government, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make :)

He was born in New York. He's not an immigrant at all.

But he is a registered Democrat, and as such he almost certainly voted for Barack H. Obama.

Call me crazy, but if you stand on a soapbox and preach about the godly necessity of killing Jews, gay people and/or minorities, you are plotting attacks against the United States. The legal system shouldn't have to wait until someone else with sufficient low self-esteem and gullibility actually plans such an attack before they can act.

He also probably likes watching the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, movies starring Will Smith and drinking Coca-Cola products, as the majority of Americans also do. I think you are reaching pretty far.

Are you implying that he's not enjoying those things in heaven?

I have always wondered. If the men get 70 virgins, what do the 70 virgins get? How does this work out in any positive way for the women?

I sympathize with your thoughts, and I would like to see religious nuts cut off from the source, but it's important that it be done with measured consideration within the framework of the law. Surveilling people who make specific threats, FWIW, doesn't seem that far of a stretch (though an international hit squad might be a little excessive).

The reason why the Constitution exists is exactly for moments like these. We're no better than the oppressor if we use their tactics (labelling people with psychological disorders, imprisoning people for speech).

I just don't see it. I don't think eye for an eye will really root out the irrationality that powers this hate either, it might just bury it (which could be good enough). I would trust in the long-term trends, not the short-term bumps, and trust in the rule of law. Maybe I'm naive, but it hasn't worked out that bad, recent tragedies notwithstanding.

    but yeah, religious nuts. brr.

I was thinking about creating a Twitterbot that sent pictures of men kissing to every Da'esh-used hashtag, but I don't know how many death threats I want to wake up to :/ Might just do it because f**k the nuts.

The 72 virgins this is non-canon, at least it's not specifically in the Quran.

What's interesting is that some speculate that they may not necessarily be women, which makes heaven sound a bit like a Pokemon tournament if those are the virgins in question.

Given this guy is a U.S. citizen born in the U.S., Trump's proposed Muslim visitors/immigrants ban, whatever form that it takes, would not have protected anyone from him. And if this guy is acting alone without coordinating with anyone or telling anyone, monitoring communications and other form of spying might well be ineffective also.

I agree with the first part, people should be there and identify any bastards that preach hate---but kill them without due process etc?

That's insanity. I hope that was an emotional post, everybody is entitled to due process by the law that governs us no matter what we may think. Even the worst scumbags like this guy, they need to face the shame of what they've done and look onto everyone of the faces, the families they tore apart.

It's pretty plausible for someone to hate other groups without subconsciously longing for or identifying with them. Pre-war racial bigotry, particularly in this country against blacks and Asians, was equal parts of pretty straightforward resentment, disgust and subjugation.
