You're also forgetting that with the trade exception we can help another team avoid the luxury tax THIS year. Rice's contract wouldn't help another team until next year. That's a big difference. That's why Brandon's deal was different than the other expiring contracts. Brandon is retiring so his salary comes off the books in January rather than after the season.
duly noted. aelliot can lecture me on the cba anytime. I just hope they use it and make the loss of those picks worth it.
Just in case this has not been said. Houstons pick next year is only top 10 protected (next 2 years, top 2 protected after that), not lottery protected as a lot of people have said.
yessssssssssssssss, Finally all those nights of prayer have been answered. The wicked contract from the west is finally dead... Let's all join in song
I'm just glad that we got rid of Rice. Rudy was just a little late on his favorite 3 point shooter of all-time, that's all.
i know this has been posted many times, but the rockets really should have made a trade for rice back in the mid 90ies...
I'm not very conversant on the CBA, and it's possible I have my sports confused, but isn't there a rule that prevents a team from trading its #1 pick two years in a row? We didn't have one in 2003, now in 2004 as well? is this legal under the CBA?
God its good to be a Jazz fan on days like this. I realize my team is going to win about 15 games this year, but at least we can still beat Houston in the offseason. I can imagine the conversation now. <Les Alexander> Hey Carroll, I don't have the money to pay this luxury tax stuff. Last year killed me <Carroll Dawson> Hmm, well, lets see who we can dump. Rice is a role player on our young team, making 7.5 mil that counts 9+ mil against the cap. Let's see if Utah will help us out. (CD picks up the phone) <CD> Hey Kevin, I need your help buddy. We have to shed some of this payroll. Can you take Glen Rice off our hands? <Kevin O'Conner> (eyes light up) Sure thing buddy. You know I'm always here for you. What can you do to make it worth our money. <CD> How about we throw in some picks <Kevin> Sure thing! One more thing though. You have to take John Ameachi from us. <CD> *gasp* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Isn't there anything else we can do? <Kevin> Sorry bro, its gotta be this way. <CD> Damnit! How am I gonna explain this to the fans. *hangs up* <Kevin> Hey Larry (Miller), I just dumped that bloated fat ass Brit that kept pissing Jerry off, without taking on any players that will count against the cap next year! <Larry> I love you, man.
The rule actually says that you can't go two consecutive "future" first rounds without a pick. The catch is that as soon as the draft is complete, then that years pick is no longer a future pick. So, according to the rule, we can trade our 2004 pick as long as we still have a 2005 pick. Theoretically, you could trade you next year's first round pick the day after each draft and never have a pick. The other thing to note is that the rule just talks about first round picks, not neccessarily your own. So, at any point in time you have to have a first round pick in one of the next two drafts. Does that make sense?
If you guys want to make another trade like that, just let us know. See who is laughing all the way to the bank and the play-offs!!! Don't forget to send Rice's check over here to Houston. He lives here you know!
OMG, are Spazz fans really trying to run smack?? I guess Humor isn't exactly a strong suit of Mormons. And jeez, HighPost? Isn't that the whiney little punk that admitted to crying after a Jazz loss? Hope you enjoy getting anally molested about 65 times this year. That should give you something to cry about...
Oh Utah will send Rice his check. But they'll send it with the cash that Houston threw into the deal. Utah will wind up buying out Rice's contract for less than he's due, and use the money that Houston threw in on the trade to pay it. So essentially, Utah's out no money (or very little if any). Houston got nothing for this trade except financial relief for the owners. IF Houston even gets a trade exemption, I doubt they'll even use it.
If you think Rice will settle his $9.6 mil contract for $2, 3 mils you are mistaken. Better save up now. You don't want to be called dead-beat, do u?
His contract is for 9 mil on the books, but only 7 mil or so in actual base salary. At 50% that's 3.5mil. If Houston threw in the max 3mil allowed, Utah's paying 500k. Meanwhile Houston's paying 2.5mil a year for Ameachi. Oh, and in case you are wondering, he sucks. Trust me.
And watching Jerry Sloan bust a carotid artery over not getting a call this year ("hey," says the ref, "cry all you want; Flopton-to-'Clothesline Malone' is no more, so what do I owe you? Maybe you should have gone back to your John Deere") will be sweeeeeeeeeeeet.
