I can respect that and I do as well, but as much as we may know there are hundreds of other kids who we do not know who will be taken in that time.

For 5 hours of the draft I do not want to hear these guys talk and watch mom and dad's home video on the screen b/c that is the only footage of the HS pitcher in Hattisburg, Mississippi.

I think as it stands it is fine. The local radio stations have updates and tell you when a player of note locally was taken.

If you are really hardcore, you can follow it with mlb.com live feed.

It covers two days, and basically goes on until teams don't want to draft anymore. 50+ rounds is the norm.

To answer the other thoughts: Yes, the MLB draft is a phone-in deal. No, it shouldn't, and probably couldn't be televised. Consider how hard they have to scrap to get footage of well-known high school Basketballers. It is worse for the baseballers. All the production values in the world couldn't make an entertaining program out of announcers who know nothing about the guys, and video shot by mom with a $500 DVcam.

Watching a baseball draft would put me to sleep faster than watching a baseball game. Which would be pretty damn fast.

who is the one cheeseball who voted for yes?

Yea I wanna watch a million rounds of players I've never heard of and will likely never make it big in the majors.

I admit, it was me. I wouldn't watch every round, just the first 10 or so. I followed it through the live feed TheHorns talked about last year. There's really been a trend in recent years to take more college players in the first couple of rounds, and I follow those guys all year through Baseball America and the games I go to and/or see on tv.

i believe piazza was a 63rd round pick. is it really true they just pick till they don't want to anymore? how does that work. just go until you don't feel like paying a guy a couple thousand a year to be in single A?

That's actually one reason why I'd like to see the draft on t.v. (first 5-7 rounds ONLY). More and more teams are going after college players in hopes of them getting to the majors faster than the highschoolers. Teams want to see more of an immediate return on their initial investment rather than waiting several years for a highschool "phenom" to develop in the minors. Of course, NOT all college players will be better players than some highschoolers who may have to develop in the minors for awhile BUT teams want to see players get up here faster, ala: Mark Prior & Kirk Saarloos! EXTREME opposite ends of the spectrum but you get my point......

Wrong. I know for a fact that myself and a few of my friends all follow hockey prospects pretty well. Then to say Canadians don't is a joke, they can probably name the phenoms in the 10-13 year old leagues.

Plus, the NHL draft is actually exciting. TONS of trades. TONS. Usually some big name players too.

I agree, Hockey is much better followed in the lower leagues.
if you follow the OHL you have most of the draft covered :)
add in the NCAA tourney and you are really doing well.
finnaly the world championships highlight young talent from all over the world. It made garth Snow a houshold name before he was drafted.

one litle note though. One Euro league is owned by an American. or 6 teams are anyways. so I am sure some people can pronounce the countries names.
