HOUSTON (Sept. 29, 2003) - The Houston Rockets have signed forward/center Guy Rucker and guard Melvin Sanders, general manager Carroll Dawson announced today. They will participate in Rockets training camp, which begins on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Rucker Rucker, (6-9, 270 pounds), played three games last season with the Golden State Warriors. He grabbed one rebound and dished out one assist in four minutes of play. Rucker played three seasons at Iowa, and professionally in Europe. Sanders, (6-5, 210 pounds), played at Oklahoma State last season and averaged 12.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 32 games. www.rockets.com
Melvin Sanders should be a JVG favorite he can play some serious D. He is also a fair 3 point shooter.
So ummm where was the media day stuff? I rushed home from work to checkout the news since I thought they were going to show some footage, but none to my enjoyment, just the news we signed these 2 newbies.
Today was just the first day of camp for players with three years of less of NBA experience (i.e., Eddie Griffin, Bostjan Nachbar, and all the training camp fodder). The veterans don't start for a few more days.
Yea I knew that, thats Training Camp. I meant Media Day which is BEFORE the start of training camp which usually falls on the last monday of September. For all the newbies out there, Media Day is when they take all of their photos in their jerseys for various things (media guides, year books, etc....) and they usually give interview for the website, news stations etc... and ALWAYS happens before training camp begins.
That quote from codell; does it imply a competition in camp to light a fire under the other players? Or an actual chance to make the team? Or both? I went to the University of Iowa. When Rucker came in, expectations were high. He didn't meet those expectations but maybe he's done well in the lesser leagues since college. I would still expect JVG to reach out to Anthony Mason before signing (to a guaranteed contract) a relative nobody, unless the "nobody" really shows he belongs. In that respect, I'm pulling for homeboy Gabe Muoneke.
