Aside from my doubts about D'Antoni being a guy who can tailor his system to his personnel, I don't think a lot of people remember him trashing his stars in the public when he was a headcoach in LA and NY. The LAST thing this team needs if for D'Antoni talking in public about James or Morey or anyone. This team has had enough media circuses and doesn't need another one. Hiring D'Antoni just invites that kind of circus to town again...

“Who is Stephen Silas?” is the question most Rockets are asking themselves. After talking on the phone with individuals and researching more about Stephen Silas, I believe he’s a great candidate who can excel as a head coach in this league.

As the son of longtime NBA player and head coach Paul Silas, Stephen Silas has been around the league his entire life. Despite not playing NBA basketball, he’s had a plethora of opportunities to immerse himself with the league.

Silas played basketball for four years at Brown University, where he double-majored in Sociology and Organizational Behavior/Management. After his college years, he worked for multiple seasons as an advanced NBA scout and a college scout for the Cavaliers, Hornets, and Wizards. After his first year with Washington, Don Nelson hired him onto his staff at Golden State for four seasons. He then returned to Charlotte, where he’s currently the assistant coach under head coach Steve Clifford. He’s been the head coach of three summer league teams, and has 12 games of NBA head coaching experience for the Bobcats back in the 2011-2012 season.

Stephen Silas is a very respected person and coach. Numerous individuals refer to him as smart and innovative, always prepared and a great teacher to players and coaches alike.

Stephen Curry had only positives to say about Stephen Silas during their time together with Golden State.

“I’m going to miss him a lot, man,” point guard Stephen Curry said. “That was my go-to assistant for watching film, studying my game and continuing to learn. I always went to him for advice. Personally, he’s my guy.”

Many of the Warriors front office and coaching staff credited Stephen Silas with Monta Ellis’ maturation as a leader on the floor, and Stephen Curry’s adjustment to playing point guard and running an NBA offense as floor-general. He was known for his innovate ideas during game preparation, and ability to connect with players and help them maximize their strengths.

Stephen Silas even has a close relationship with former Houston Rockets point-guard Jeremy Lin. In Lin’s first season in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, Jeremy Lin worked very closely with Stephen Silas. They went through tape of ball-handlers like Steve Nash, working on the fundamentals of the pick-and-roll. This basketball staple isn’t just about getting the screen and driving hard. It’s about waist placement, footwork, vision, agility, and the ability to finish or make the pass. Jeremy wouldn’t ultimately stay with Golden State, but his studious focus with Silas guided him towards becoming the adept pick-and-roll guard he is today.

When Jeremy Lin signed with the Charlotte Hornets during the 2015 free-agency period, he said Stephen Silas was a ‘huge’ reason for him choosing the team. He cited the importance of the culture and the environment Steve Clifford and the coaching staff implemented in the locker room. The Rockets seem to lack identity, culture, and camaraderie. Areas where Stephen Silas would make strides towards improving and permanently fixing.

Silas has been around many different types of teams. In his first few years, he was around a veteran group that consisted of Stacey Augmon, PJ Brown, Eddie Jones, etc. He’s also been around a young cohort of Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, Anthony Morrow, etc.

He’s publicly talked about his love for working with players of all backgrounds and experiences, wanting to see them get better and continue to grow. Silas has worked with players like Baron Davis in his rookie season, also with LeBron James in his rookie season, and Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry in their first few seasons. “Everyday watching those guys work to get better and seeing the fruits of their labor,” Stephen Silas talking about why he enjoys coaching and his motivation in basketball.

When working with Stephen Curry, Silas used his past experiences to help Curry grow as an all-around player, helping him improve his game day after day. In an interview back in 2009, Silas tried to connect Steph with players who had already done it. “I used past experiences working with Baron when he was a rookie, working with LeBron when he was a rookie, and relating the experiences they had, they became All-Stars,” Stephen Silas talking about how he approached Stephen Curry. “You’re going through things that they went through. It’s normal to have ups and downs during the season, it’s normal to make mistakes because you’re young and you haven’t seen a situation… Main thing he has to concentrate on is getting better every single day. In the film room, on the practice floor”.

Speaking of Stephen Curry. Fans have seen Curry dribble two basketballs at once before each game. This warm-up drill was implemented into his routine when Silas was on the Golden State staff. The purpose is to work on using both hands, utilizing the basketball in different ways, controlling the dribble. Within the warm-up they’ll alternate dribbles, pass back and forth, work on lateral movement. This ultimately helps players be more comfortable with the basketball. Not only for this drill, but Stephen Silas is known for coming up with new, innovative drills and warm-ups for Hornets’ practice. It helped Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lin have career seasons for the Charlotte. With players in Houston, like K.J. McDaniels, who need to work on attacking closeouts, innovative drills like the one mentioned will only improve players’ fundamentals.

Stephen Silas is characterized as someone with tactical brilliance and great ability to relate with players. He’s well respected around the league as a person and an assistance coach. He has experience with analytics and developmental technology, as from 2003-2005 he managed and developed technology and scouting systems for the Cleveland coaching staff.

Silas had a second interview with the Houston Rockets on Thursday and left a great impression. At 42 years of age, he has 16 years of NBA coaching experience and a multitude of relationships and encounters to back up his impressive resume. If he’s indeed the next Rockets head coach, the question then becomes: Can Silas create an atmosphere and culture that allows players to have fun and stay committed to winning? I believe so. It’s up to the Rockets and Les Alexander to give him that opportunity, or go with a proven head coach in Mike D’Antoni.

I much rather have Stephen Silas as Head coach paired with Jeff Bzdelik as associate coach and have Rex Kalamian as 3rd assistant. I am not a fan of Lionel Hollins.

Hollins looks like the man that can finally put Harden in his place. He's also sorta into the Morey analytics theory.
Combined with young generation Silas. Think Rockets can FINALLY have a GOOD long term coaching staff... Kalamian good choice too

I think that this is all Les's way of telling Daryl that coaches can't be the reason for failure anymore. Say what you will about D'antoni, but this is an allstar cast of coaches.

Seeing that video, the one unique part was the preference to not physically box out but instead touch and rebound The rest (big dribble to an open, guard take sthe ball, run wide, 45 degree cut after 3 line is all pretty standard).

Other thoughts... Jim Barnett was always a good announcer and student of the game. Surprised he didn't think about coaching at some level.

And while the video was a few years ago, Silas seems so young looking. And Stephen... upper body work, OK?

Pretty tough decision for Silas, honestly.

Become a head coach for an NBA team, or stay an asst. coach where you'll probably win rings, while mentoring a familiar player (and an MVP) in Curry.
