Ferry ends playing career, takes front-office job with Spurs Sept. 29, 2003 SportsLine.com wire reports SAN ANTONIO -- Danny Ferry ended his career as an NBA player Monday and took a front-office job with the San Antonio Spurs, where he was a reserve forward the past three years. Ferry, a 13-year veteran who had been part of a three-team trade in July, was hired as director of basketball operations. He hinted last month he most likely would retire and join the Spurs' management rather than go to Indiana. "He has been around the NBA his entire life," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "He really understands all aspects of the game." The Spurs also hired 26-year-old Sam Presti director of player personnel. Presti had been assistant scouting director. Ferry, 36, is the son of Bob Ferry, who played 10 years as a center in the NBA before becoming Washington's general manager from 1973-90. The younger Ferry starred at Duke, where he won the Naismith Award and was chosen by the Los Angeles Clippers with the No. 2 overall pick in 1989. He was then dealt to Cleveland that year. In 10 years with the Cavaliers, he averaged 7.8 points and 3 rebounds. He signed with the Spurs as a free agent in 2000 and over three seasons averaged 4.1 points and 2 rebounds. For his career, the 6-foot-10 forward made 39.2 percent of his 3-pointers. Ferry was traded to Indiana in a five-player deal that sent Pacers center Brad Miller to Sacramento and Kings center Scot Pollard to Indiana. Sacramento forward Hedo Turkoglu and Indiana guard Ron Mercer came to San Antonio.

The greatest player......who never was. A man who singlehandedly destroyed a franchise by being traded for Ron Harper. The Cavs never recovered and look at them now. Enuf said.
so this means that the spurs got hedo and ron mercer basically for free since danny ferry retired. i tihnk the pacers got shafted big time on the deal now losing miller and mercer and getting pollard in return

i couldn't stand danny ferry as a player. he was the dirtiest, softest "big man" i've seen in a long time. then i actually met the guy @ central market place in san antonio. he actually 1. was a nice guy 2. is not 6'10" (closer to 6'7 or 6'8) 3. has the most beautiful little girl that said, i glad he retired. he sucked, and was dirty.
