There is one at 290 and Fairbanks N. Houston and there is another one at Highway 249 @ Grant (just north of Willowbrook).

yeah, but the walmart isnt there anymore.... but those are the three closest bowling alleys in the CF area. there's del-mar lanes on mangum north of 290, i think too.... but you might as well stick with copperfield bowl, windfern bowl, or tomball bowl...

There's one on the corner of Fry Road and Saums Road. I drive by it all the time but never been in it.

I was just wondering yesterday if there were any bowlers here.

I bowl in a league on Fri nights, and last night I had one of the best games I have had in a while...immediately followed by one of the worst games I have had since I was 13.

    I went from a 265 to a 142.

anyone else bowl? and what kind of average do you carry(if you have one) and finally, what is the highest game/series you have ever had?

Ya, i suck right now, but I'm getting better, i havent bowled for two days in the same year in my life (all 15 years), so you can imagine how my top score is a 140. I don't really have any form, mostly just watching guys who are good around me, I'm in the process of learning to spin the ball effectivley but it is quite difficult. I would appreciate any tips.

It really isnt that difficult(easy for me to say) ;)

Spinning the ball (or hooking in bowling terms) is all about how oyu hold the ball and release it..
Go read herehttp://www.bowlingfans.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/13/t/000135/p/1 for some relatively straight-forward steps on how to do it.

That's the one I goto sometimes. I thought that if you were on a team they let you bowl free/discounted at a certain time or day of the week or something. I heard there was actually some murders at the bowling ally off 290. Some guy robbed the place a looooooong time ago and then killed some of the workers in a back room. True stroy?

Most houses will give their league bowlers discounted games.
I dont know of any that let them bowl free.

When I worked at a place in Pasadena in the early 90's...they let us employees bowl free, and me and the other mechanic(pinsetter mechanics) used to bowl 30+ a day.

ok well i guess i am probably the biggest bowler around here...

i used to work at the one behind where the walmart was off of hwy 6 by 529. it's called copperfield bowl. good people there. there used to be good youth leagues there on saturday mornings. off of 290 there is winfern its an ok place...kind of trashy in my opinion, but maybe they have fixed it up since i've been there. there is also a max bowl near 290...small bowling alley...had an easy shot the last time i bowled there. not in the best part of town either and doesn't look like the best place in the world from the outside. when me and my friends were in youth leagues we'd go bowl pot games there at night. good times. pot games not meaning for pot but for money...everyone throws in $5 or $10 in the pot for the game and you pay out 1st and 2nd place.

anyhow...back to the cheap bowling...you can't get cheap bowling if you aren't in a league or if you don't work at one of the places. the prices have gone up so much for open play bowlers it's not even funny. i think the place with the cheapest rates that i knew of is this place off of the southwest freeway just past the beltway called dynamic lanes. it's not in the greatest part of town but it's a good house with good ownership. i worked there for a summer. their rates were pretty good if you go before 5 or 6 in the evening. get like the hour deals instead of paying by the game. if you can get in one game every 10 minutes or so then you'll save money generally.

and yes that story is true about the robbery and murder...i think it was at winfern and it was awhile back.

and finally...hooking the ball. it's kind of hard to just explain without seeing someone do it but here is the best way it was explained to me. the basic motion you have is like shaking someone's hand. don't try to get crazy with it and don't try to hook the ball because thats generally when you screw it up. some of the people who hook it the most don't look like they put a ton on the ball. it's a very simple motion but hard to get right.

here is the basics...ok you hold the ball when you are getting set generally with your palm facing up and supporting the ball. then you push it forward and bring it back with your palm still flat and as you go thru your backswing still keep your palm flat. then right as you are coming down from your backswing right before you release the ball start to turn your hand as if you were throwing a football up in the air and making it spiral. i hope that makes some sense. when you release the ball your thumb should not be past the 12 o'clock position if you were to look at your hand as if it were a clock face. generally mine finishes around the 1 o'clock position. when your hand goes past the 12 o'clock position to 11 o'clock thats when you'll start spinning the ball which is not what you want because the ball doesn't hook like that...it just spins like a top and doesn't move. i wish there was some way to show you because its too hard to explain without seeing.

the main thing you need to work on first is really getting your timing down and keeping your shoulders level and square to the lanes. by timing i mean releasing the ball as you are just setting your foot down from your last step. hooking the ball is the least of the things that you need to learn even though it is fun. bowling is very fundamental and a mind game. people will probably rip me but i compare it to golf. not a huge amount of athleticism involved in either of the 2, both are mind games, both are highly fundamental, and both are extremely frustrating.

Atleast a decade ago. BTW I hate having to put my own groceries on that belt. Tell them to change it back. They're trying to be cool like whole foods and it's just not working. :D

    I would argue that...;)

Seriously, it is hard to describe how to do it( throwing a hook), thats why the pages I linked to earlier in the thread have links to videos showing the basic motions.

btw...what do you average..and how long have you been bowling?

let's see...i think i started around when i was 10 and then i stopped for awhile and started back up again seriously at 16 when i started working at copperfield. i bowled for UT for a couple years until i had to quit because i cracked a bone in my elbow and i ended up having a bone chip in there that needed surgery and i haven't had the same avg since. before that i could usually avg around 210-215 on a house shot, which isn't spectacular, but i was good because i could play on almost any shot since i could adjust really well. you get some crazy shots when you're bowling collegiate tourneys. it seemed like i was better on tougher shots. it's fun though. i started getting back into bowling last year and slowly brought my avg back up to 180 in league and finally got my elbow to stop hurting. after the surgery the doc told me i had no cartilage in my elbow so i would have to build up scar tissue in there. and then in my league rolloff i sandbagged and it was wonderful. i averaged around 215 for the 12 game rolloff and our team won $10,000. people we're pissed...lol. but hey i was practicing a ton and trying to get better again. i was kind of getting back to how i used to be with my accuracy and all. then i didn't bowl all summer and this season i am having elbow pain again and my accuracy is gone again. i'm considering trying to go lefty since i am left handed. there is this one guy who bowls in that league who did it. robert lawrence...he runs a pro shop over at showplace lanes here in austin and after he had surgery on his right shoulder he started bowling left handed. actually averaged higher lefty than he did righty. anyhow...enough rambling...bottom line is i'm not very good anymore and i don't practice like i used to and i'm not as competitive at it as i used to be. i hope some day i can get back into it like i used to, but right now i just don't have the time or money. where do you bowl out of in houston?
