In Marc Stein's piece today on espn.com: A recent visit by Wolves management to Los Angeles, where Garnett now spends his offseasons, has apparently convinced KG to rethink that plan. Until August, the expectation even in Wolves circles had Garnett intent on exercising his right to test the market next July. That's even though Minnesota can pay him far more than any other team, and even though the teams Garnett would figure to have serious interest in, like Houston, won't have anywhere near the cap room to make him a representative offer. KG has an interest in Houston!? Too bad we can't afford him.
Is this for real? It is the first I have seen of it. That would be unreal if he ever came here for less money... he has all the money he will ever need, but you never know...
Sure we can! Minnesota trades: SF Kevin Garnett (23.0 ppg, 13.4 rpg, 6.0 apg in 40.5 minutes) Minnesota receives: SF Glen Rice (9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.7 minutes) PF Maurice Taylor (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.0 apg in 20.6 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes) PG Moochie Norris (4.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 2.4 apg in 16.8 minutes) Change in team outlook: +3.2 ppg, +0.4 rpg, and -1.2 apg. Houston trades: SF Glen Rice (9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.7 minutes) PF Maurice Taylor (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.0 apg in 20.6 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes) PG Moochie Norris (4.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 2.4 apg in 16.8 minutes) Houston receives: SF Kevin Garnett (23.0 ppg, 13.4 rpg, 6.0 apg in 82 games) Change in team outlook: -3.2 ppg, -0.4 rpg, and +1.2 apg. TRADE ACCEPTED
WOULD FIGURE TO HAVE? What kind of phrase is that....trying to be all mysterious and clues and hinty. Well I would love to have Garnett...but we can't afford him and his outrageous contracts! I wish we could though.
The reference to Houston in the article was which "teams Garnett would figure to have serious interest in, like Houston" to purchase with his new $300 million contract from Minnesota. Expectation in Minneapolis had been that KG would be looking to aquire the T-wolves. But only a fool would buy a team with such an overpriced payroll.
Maybe Garnett WOULD FIGURE that since he has been overpaid (relative to the current NBA economy) for the last few years, he should take a vet minimum to play for a winner like us.
Yeah...to a cc.neter with nothing else to do..make a website aimed at getting Garnett to come to Houston! A Come to Houston KG campaign! W00t!
Here's the rest of the article ... A recent visit by Wolves management to Los Angeles, where Garnett now spends his offseasons, has apparently convinced KG to rethink that plan. One team insider, after the fearless prediction, went so far as to say: "I don't think KG has ever seen another home locker room. He just wants to check things out." Wolves owner Glen Taylor and general manager Kevin McHale must have sensed that because they were soon in L.A. to speak with Garnett face-to-face and discuss the parameters of an extension package. What's unclear is how Garnett will respond. Besides the riches it can offer, Minnesota also has presented Garnett with a slew of new teammates: Latrell Sprewell, Sam Cassell and Michael Olowokandi, most notably. That combination could convince Garnett to sign a five-year extension before Halloween, which is naturally the Wolves' preference. Then again, even if Garnett gets the feeling during Minnesota's first few practices that the 0-for-7 playoff hex is about to be exorcised, he might still elect to hold off until the offseason so he can visit the Rockets or the Pistons or perhaps another title contender. Either way, there remains little chance he'll actually leave 'Sota. As much as he's a fan of Steve Francis and Yao Ming, Garnett knows that Houston and virtually every other good team is well over the cap. Even the Spurs, who manage the salary cap as well as anyone in the league, wouldn't be able to create enough space next summer to make a maximum bid for Garnett. That means KG would either have to try to force a sign-and-trade out of Minny or take a pay cut of more than 50 percent to sign elsewhere. Garnett can certainly afford it, after collecting all of his famed $126 million contract, but there is likewise plenty of value in the familiarity that comes with staying in a comfort zone, along with very handsome compensation from bosses who are spending far more than most teams to try to secure first-rate help. Should Garnett decide to hold off for now on the extension, that'll mean a skittish season for the franchise and its fans, but nothing Minnesota can't survive. New Jersey is freshly removed from the same situation with Jason Kidd and managed just fine.
OKAY. Well first of all, Marc Stein mentions the Houston Rockets a lot. And I'm glad Garnett actually is interested in playing with Stevie and Yao! That's good news to me...he likes them... I think he would be perfect here. But reality is he will never be a Rocket...unless he buys the Rockets.
Odd. A lot of games vs. the TWolves, I've seen Garnett and Steve jawing at each other, and not playfully. I remember I think last season they had to be pulled apart on at least 1 or 2 occasions.
Maybe they're just two ultra-competitive young dudes, and everything is forgotten after the game? I was wondering earlier in the summer if lack of activity in the Rox "bullpen" had anything to do with Garnett's supposed interest in Houston. I've read this sort of thing before. If the Rockets knew KG wanted to come here, it might have explained their interest in Sheed('s expiring contract). The only way to get the capspace would be to trade off Cato, Mo, and probably Mooch, which would give us about $14 mil cap space, and that would still leave us...not able to sign the guy.
Oh God...this is just the kind of thing that's gonna lead to hundreds of pointless posts based on nothing but pie in the sky supposition... So what's wrong with that?!?!? Getting Garnett is the kind of possibility you take huge chances for...mortgage the future....whatever. If there is anything to this we should seriously investigate any options open to us which might free up enough room. God. C) Yao Ming PF) Kevin Garnett SF) My grandma ( deceased) SG) My grandma's grandma ( also deceased) PG) Steve Francis That'll have you in the serious money for a decade.
Real GM approves your lineup... ...hell, I recommended the same thing last year and people thought I was trippin'.
LOL. What do you mean by "That'll have you in the serious money for a decade?" Garnett making like 25 million. Francis like 17 million. Yao like 14 million. ??? Or do you mean the Rockets will be banking in tons of money after we win consecutive championships and own the entire NBA? Kevin Garnett, Yao Ming, and Steve Francis is just awesome. I bet if we got Garnett, Mobley and all the rest of the sucky guys on our team would be willing to take the minimum just to be on our team! I would play for free!
if we had garnet we would be unstopable? =) C) Yao Ming PF) Kevin Garnett SF) My grandpa ( deceased) SG) Cuttino Mobley PG) Steve Francis
I'd replace your grandma and your grandma's grandma with myself (still alive) and my grandma (deceased).
