Don't sleep on the religious cult in King's Landing. I'm predicting some type of power play from that High Sparrow guy. He's definitely not as righteous as he portrays and seemed to be cozying up to the Queen in the premier. I think something's at play.
I agree its a weak plot line... and I feel that's adding to the criticism of the scene in general. Those other scenes mentioned had more hmmph... because you cared about the characters, you had been invested in those characters, and when something happened to them out of nowhere... it created a reaction. In this case, nobody really cares about Dorne... so when there's a coup that affects the king that nobody really cares about, the scene gets dissected and criticized. But at its core, they used the exact same devices/elements to set that scene up... again, it wasn't a great plot line, but the event is par for the course for the show.
Most book readers agree that they totally fu**d up Dorne... There are some pretty interesting story-lines that the show omitted so I won't discuss here but yall can google it for your pleasure. Those story-lines, however, are very stagnant so I see how they probably wouldn't make sense for the show (time constraints and all). Honestly, I think the coupe seemed way to easy to achieve and they 100% messed up the casting of the sand snakes. Having said that, I love this show way too much to get hung up in that.
The Dorne coup was fine. Didn't even bat an eye. Gave zero F's when Shaq and the guy who plays a terrorist in every movie got stabbed. The mistress and the Sand Snakes are terrible. I just cringe whenever they are on screen. Oberyn was a cool dude with a cool accent. But that "accent" is now annoying coming from the Sand Snakes. It's a reflection of poor casting choices rather than weak storytelling.
I figured most non-book readers would have an opinion like this one, it's pretty fair. The casting sucks but you don't really have connections to "Shaq" so you don't really care. As a book reader, like I said is kinda fu** up how easy they got rid of a legendary lineage (Martels) but I understand that it is a tv show and they have constraints so I'm letting it go.
The more I see disappointment from the book-readers... the more I kinda feel relieved having not invested the hours and subsequent emotions by reading them first. No doubt, I want to read them at some point... I just don't see how a book reader will ever be completely happy about the show (a mostly universal effect when any great book gets translated to the screen), and its only going to get worse now as the show has to now survive on its own within the universe that was already created.
I used to get really worked up about differences between show and books a few seasons ago. I'm at the point now where I think of them as two different things and I actually appreciate when the show strays away from what GRRM wrote. The changes don't always work, but I don't get as upset about that as I used to.
I feel the same. Winds of Winter will be his last if rumors are true about it being scheduled for release later this year or early next. I really wish he would let someone else finish the final book. Joe Abercrombie would be my choice.
I agree to this. I'll go a step further and say that I think he's got a beef from the past with the Lannisters & their past wars that might or might not have wronged him in a past life. Potential Spoilers below reg. High Sparrow- Spoiler I've seen somewhere that he was previously from the Riverlands as a sept (with the same group that will have a storyline with a fan favorite character brought back this season & Ian McShane's new character), and if you recall from before in seasons 2 & 3, the Mountain & Tywin completely raped and pilaged the Riverlands & the High Sparrows home & likely family. My GUESS right now is that he plots with Margery to help wipe out the Lannisters, putting the Tyrells in further power alongside the church. don't know what affect this would have on Tommen as the boy king in love with Margery but it would be a fitting and sad way to conclude the Lannisters reign. Of course the big showdown would be Cersei and Margery. Maybe a trial by combat with Soloras vs. The Zombie Mountain. It would be a nice callback to season 1 when Soloras beat The Mountain in a joust & the Mountain tried to kill him & The Hound saved him.
I'm a book reader, and I'm thankful as hell that they shat all over Dorne (and other storylines). I appreciate the divergence from the books. Two series in one!
To each their own, amirite? Spoiler I just wanted to see that fire and blood speech.. Oh, and dragons roasting a certain character who thought he could tame them
The way I see it, Dorne, while important in the books in their own right, was always going to stand outside of the major players in the series. Even GRRM isn't going to all the sudden what book 4 introduce a house that will be at the top at the end of the series. They were always there primarily to shake things up and add a dimension to the Lannister's arch. I didn't have a problem with the show placing the Dorne storyline as a secondary unimportant house, but I did have an issue with it seeming out of place from the rest of the series. The Sand Snakes being the most out of place. There is a place for sassy girl assassins who fight dirty & get away with implausible acts of violence, but in this series it just didn't fit. Doran is dead which I'm okay with (yes he didn't give the speech but the TV show audience wouldn't have got it anyways), and Areo & Tristane were killed before they were even used which is what it is, but the Sand Snakes are still a player for the showrunners to use which is all they were really meant to be to begin with in the show.
Ser Loras? Took me a minute to figure out what you were saying. And yes, the Knight of Flowers is still the most bada$$ fighter in GoT that we simply have never really seen fight.
Eh, she armed them and gave them military power. Like any dominant religion, they have a lot of power that is derived from their role as the intercessor with the Gods. The Lannisters' fear, obviously, is that if they put down the sparrows, the common people will all rebel. I wouldn't say that. Martin screwed up Dorne too. The Sand Snakes and Hotah and the other characters there are mostly flat and out of place and annoying. Doran himself has an interesting storyline, but it seems like Martin disappointed a lot of book-readers with Dorne. I think this is wise. I was a show-watcher first, and then read the books between seasons. I enjoyed the show more when I hadn't read the books. I am hoping Martin doesn't publish Winds of Winter before the show concludes.
haha.... yeah however you spell it. I'm sure I butcher pretty much every characters name. Loras is a great underdog in a fight like that too. Only if he doesn't win though there would be a flood of articles written the next day bashing the showrunners because of the obvious.
Yeah they turned some of the most legendary fighters into Jobbers. I hope if we get a certain flashback this season. A certain knight will live up to his name.
The show sucks now imo. Started sucking towards the end of last year. Didn't read the books, but the writing seems worse. I guess because they aren't following GRRM anymore. Regular Hollywood writers are writing it now. Not gonna watch unless I hear better things
