Why has Barkley not sued the Rockets over that $3 million? Why have the Rockets not sued for libel?

Guys, this doesn't really have to be under the table.

It's not under the table if it involves an unguaranteed year, which Les is fully allowed to pay regardless of career-ending injury.

Unguaranteed years don't force owners to not pay. They just *allow* owners to not pay. Barkley could have been told he'd get all the money to make up for taking less for #33...which also was legal to do so. All this is legal by CBA.

In this theory, Le$ would be a real prick to not pay Barkley the remaining year(s) as promised, just because he then had an out to not pay him.

    agree with you..

Chuck just speaks his mind and is a loud mouth.. that's for sure.... but the thing about Chuck that i find him to be a very likeable person is he is comfortable laughing at himself and being the butt of the jokes. This just kind of shows he's not full of himself and speaks to his character.

Les, on the other hand is a shrewd businessman. To him it's clearly about the bottom line and comes down to the $$$. The fact he's been silent all these years shows he probably did agree to some sort of deal to backed off on it.

I know he's our owner and we need to support Les but i lost all respect for him when he treated Hakeem the way he did. Just look at what the Lakers did for Kobe. Gave him a huge contract for his service and championships. Gave him such an awesome send off and retirement tour. Hakeem deserved the same but instead he got shipped to Canada. Can you guys imagine Les doing what the Buss family just did for Kobe?

I'm siding with Barkley on this one. Les definitely did something shady and pissed him off. Jeff Van Gundy who IMO is one of the more honorable and honest figures in the NBA also doesn't trust him.

yup and it doesnt surprise me that les would back out. to him it's always been about the money..

Cuban, Buss Family, Peter Holt, Steve Ballmer are all WAYYY BETTER owners than Les.

With Donald Sterling out of the league.. Les is now near the bottom for owners

Barkley signed a $1M, 1 year deal in '98-'99 season in order to create enough cap room for the Rockets to be able to afford Pippen.

The next season ('99-'00) Barkley ended up resigning for a starting salary of $9M but Barkley had expected the starting salary to be $14M. That's why he originally claimed that they owed him $5m.

Barkley hurt his knee in December of the '99 season so that injury had nothing to do with his issue with the Rockets.

If Barkley is now claiming that he'd owed $3M then either he thinks that he was paid $2m of the original amount or he has a bad memory.

America was laughing pretty damn hard. I'd say he got off pretty easy and he wasn't worth the time. Insulting a guy on twitter, who doesn't even have a twitter account to see it. So he probably just got the memo when he arrived to the show.

The thing is, Inside The NBA, is pure entertainment, this is their job.

    It's Toad Smith's job to....well I don't know what this dude does.

Are we sure this isn't Moronic's alternate twitter account?

    1 year.

    https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-57046513.html

He got all of the money that he signed for. He just thought that he should have gotten more.

That raises the question as why he signed for $9m if he was that offended by that amount.

    Are we sure about that?

I think Tad Brown won in this exchange. His tweet became a headline and the only ones reporting on Charles anti-Rocket tirade is the Chron.

Seems like all he's done is ensure that he'll be hated in Houston and the more he opens his mouth about the Rockets the more people associated with the Rockets are going to get annoyed by it.

I think it's fine for him to go back at Morey and Tad, but laughing at Clutch City? Also Shame on Kenny for letting him do that with him right there next to him. Charles goes "What you call them? Clutch City!?" Kenny should have gave him the elbow from the sky and reminded him of how he choked away his series against Clutch City.

    Good question.

    Lends credence to a hush-hush, under-the-table deal.

Either way, the window for payoff from Les was closed the moment Charles went public. What assurances would Les have that Barkley (of all people) would keep his mouth shut once paid off?

The potential legal exposure of such a transaction would be too much to risk for the Rockets. Would be interesting to the know the exact penalties (fines, draft picks, etc.) from the league office if news of a payoff were to leak -- hypothetically speaking.

The Rockets' brand has taken a major beating in the media since Dwight arrived. Don't see that changing, especially not at TNT, once he leaves this summer.

Every script needs a villain, I suppose.

^^^ Pretty much what Richie said. Why be liable for under the table cheating cap space fraud? How much of a fine and jail sentence if punished?

Easy said it right, if Les had paid off Barkley way before he started complaining about it publicly, Barkley wouldn't be dogging the organization all the time.

He didn't really say anything about bad about the Steve/Cuttino years, but I guess he was expecting a check around then.

and in another 15 years, that number will be changed to 1mil.

Charles also isn't very good at maths, he forget to calculate for inflation. Technically, Les would owe him more than he remembers. :)

I'm guessing at this point, it's the principle. The guy has done nothing but disrespect and bash us every chance he's gotten. Even if Les wanted to give him the money, at this point, he probably feels like he doesn't need to buy Barkley's respect.

I don't know the details of whatever the details might be; I also don't know whether Owner Alexander is wrong or if Sir Chuckles is wrong or if they're both wrong or ...

    Nor do any of us.

Hard as this is for me to say, in a War of Honest to the Death I have no idea who would live and who would die. (Cue two caskets, please.)

Man, the sad truth is Barkley runs that half time show and can say whatever he wants and get away with it. Is 3 mil really worth all the BS he has thrown our way for the past 10 years? Is the bad publicity worth more than 3 mil? I don't know the answers but just saying it might have been worth it to just pay him to STFU.

Also, Tad Brown's timing could not have been worse. He chose the single worst year to fire back on Barkley. If you are going to fire away at him, at least wait til we're playing credible! :(
