Did the Nets make a good hire? Atlanta earlier? GS in between? Who (here) might have made all, even any, of those calls on their being called to those positions?

Job #1 of a coach is controlling the team's narrative. KMc actually did this well; until he (apparently) did not. Poor coach/Good coach. Same guy/different reasons.

Clearly, obviously, this house must be fumigated. I'druther 15 newbies to having 10 of these guys back.

So, Mr Coach, just be able to control your team then lead them to promised territory.

McHale was never a good coach at anything. JVG has been a great coach everywhere he has gone.

To be fair, he did finish as one of the top candidates for coach of the year the last year he was here. Also, Rockets tried to extend him around the all-star break but he declined to keep his options open.

Technically, other than McHale, we haven't fired any coaches in 20+ years.

Looks like I'll grab a Van Gundy Jersey if it happens....

    Bring Defense back to Houston.

...just hope he's worked on his offensive philosophy....

Ettore Messina: The Rockets front office should make a hard push for the Spurs assistant Ettorre Messina. Four-time Euroleague champion and over twenty years of head-coaching experience.

Other possibilities: Sean Miller (Arizona Wildcats), Ime Udoka (Spurs), Jay Wright (Villanova), or David Blatt.

i think its a safe bet that jvg has a far more brilliant bball mind than anyone here on this board. if the league has changed considerably over the past decade when he's not been coaching and if an average fan like you and me can see it, he can certainly see it and grasp it to take advantage of it.

If JVG couldn't figure out the Utah Jazz in the playoffs what makes you think he can figure out the Warriors? Enlighten me.

No one is close to figuring out the Warriors except maybe the Spurs.

Dude coached a team to the Finals and only lost because the other team had a Dream.

Let's not pretend there are more experienced or accomplished coaches available much less any actually interested in the job. The fact that a coach of JVG's caliber is excited about wading into this mess and trying to fix it is something all Rockets fans should be excited over.

Not even MacGyver could have figured out how to beat the Jazz with Luther Head as the 3rd best scoring option. Go back and look at those rosters. Miraculous.

any game 7 in a sense is like a coin toss. you cant use just a game 7 to evaluate the whole thing. (actually i am more disappointed at his coaching in that game 7 of the mavs series.)

so who in your mind can "figure out the warriors" - amongst the available candidates out there right now? plus a hc's job isnt just to "figure out the warriors".
