I love it so far...Stay or Leave, Some Devil, Oh, and So Damn Lucky are excellent. Honestly, my expectations for this album were low(The absence of Boyd, Stefan, Leroi, and Carter just didn't sound so appealing), but they were far exceeded. The tracks lack the rich DMB sound, but, lyrically, this album is right up there with Under the Table and Dreaming(Above Crash, Everyday and below, BTCS, Busted Stuff) Again, I hate that I keep comparing this album to the DMB albums rather than accepting it as the DM album that it is, but it certainly holds its own...The bonus Dave + Tim CD is AWESOME...Anyone that likes DMB should definitely go out and buy this.
Haven't heard it yet, but honestly I'm not too excited. I know, I should give it a chance. I would be more excited if the studio musicians were named Stefan, Carter, Boyd, and Leroi...
i'm with ima. i have it...and i've listened to it a couple of times through now in the midst of driving back and forth to the courthouse...but there's something missing. i suspect it will grow on me...and there are a few songs i liked instantly...but i'm not sure any of the songs are particularly memorable the way so many DMB songs are. having said that...it's still freaking Dave.
I would say to prepare to see you boy to the news tonight. he is having a concert in the park. yup Central Park NYC. I have a few friends going, but they are crazy if you ask me. there will be like 500k people there. there are supposedly only 70k tickets, and no one is allowed in the park without one. what a joke. I dont think there are enough police in NY to make that happen. even if there is enough security to stop people from getting in there will be an overflow crowd outside whatever gates they set up, and a huge crowd. just sounds like a bad idea in general. maybe if they had 100k tickets, or more. anyhoo. dont mean to derail this thread, just a related comment
Well, I sat down and wrote a huge review of this album. I started writing at about 8:30, and an hour later, when I had one more song to write about, I accidentally pulled the power out of the wall with my foot. I can't tell you how frustrating that is. The gist of it was this: Album is GREAT. Dave writes his best lyrics on this album. Dave has become a great songwriter, where he used to only be a good one. Some of it could work with DMB, but much of the album is something that would only work with this Dave, Tim and Guests format. The album has a morose feel to it. Faves: Baby, Dodo, Stay or Leave, Trouble Great: So Damn Lucky, Gravedigger, Oh, Some Devil, Grey Blue Eyes, An' Another Thing, Oh Least Faves: Up and Away, Too High Perhaps later I'll rewrite what I'd written because I really went all out in reviewing every song, and so on. GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
OVER - - RATED ! ! ! and if ANYONE knows what that means and has the right to state it, anyone its some one who has Horns background knows what that means! sorry RM
Hey Vengeance, I've been meaning to e-mail you about the Houston recording...Did you ever get a hold of the show? I would also like some of the more notable shows...Please e-mail me. I'm loving this CD so far. It doesn't really compare that well to the DMB albums, but it is still some of the best of what's around!
I do have a copy of it, but I'm not satisfied with the quality. Not bad, but it isn't great. I should be getting what I've heard is the BEST recording of the show soon. I sent out a B+P for it recently, so I should get it soon-ish. Check out my list at http://dmbtrading.8m.com or just email me
Not to get off the subject, but how do you download music...I have a couple of songs I want, but don't know where to go, without going to jail...Advice please...
Did you get my e-mail, Vengeance? I e-mailed through the board...I'm not sure if that is the address you normally use or not.
vj23k -- sorry, I didn't realize I still had it on that email address (old one). That host went down a few months ago I updated it though -- email me now.
I know Dave's music through and through, and I'm willing to say Stay or Leave is the best song he's written since early 2000. The album is great. Other tracks I really like are Some Devil, So Damn Lucky, Dodo, and Oh. Did anyone else preorder through Warehouse and get the 9 track version on the Live CD? It's phenomenal as well.
I made a mistake and ordered through the regular online site, but I'm ordering another through WH so I can have that too. I agree that SoL is a GREAT song. The thing about this album is that these are quite arguably the best songs Dave's ever written. They aren't all classics like Two Step, #41, Nancies, etc., but I think the lyrics are better than just about anything he's ever written. Dave's songs are often lots of good phrases thrown together to a song, which sounds great, but doesn't read well at all. Some Devil's lyrics are so well-written that you can get a lot of meaning just by reading them without the music. Many of the songs do such a good job of really taking hold of an emotion and sticking with it through every word. I think this is where Dave's really improved over the past 13 or so years -- I think his lyrics have really gotten better. I *LOVE* Dodo, Oh, Baby, SDL, SoL, Save Me (took me a while to realize this is about Jesus), Some Devil and Trouble. Baby doesn't appear to be very popular from the various message boards I've read, but I think it's one of the best written songs Dave's ever done.
I like Baby too. I agree that it doesn't seem to be one of the more popular ones, but most of the DMB boards aren't even that great for DMB discussion anymore. They all worship BTCS and think they're too musically enlightened to listen to anything else DMB or Dave does. I think you have a good point about Dave's song writing. He used to just have to come up with words to go with the music the band would play and he had lots of good phrases, but the songs did not always fit together well. Now I think he's writing more with the lyrics in mind throughout the process instead of just as an afterthought. Also, it took me a few listens too to pick up on Save Me. About the 3rd or 4th time through it clicked and I realized the whole song was about Jesus.
