Yep, and when high school age teens are referred to as children and there is absolutely zero recourse to make them mind they are going to do unacceptable things to push peoples boundaries. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. It's only a matter of time before it happens again.

In a lawsuit there has to have been some sort of damage for the plaintiff to be awarded compensation. I would take one look at the smirk on the teens face in the video and come to the conclusion that there was absolutely zero damage done to him. Case closed. But thats just me.

At what point does the student have the right to defend himself with force?

I wouldn't have allowed a teacher to hit me like that.

This is why all students need concealed carry permits issued with their locker numbers. Would definitely cut down on incidents like this one.

Never, ever. That was informally drilled into kids from junior high on, that teacher's didn't care who started a fight, and the language was always there in the code of conduct that you could only physically extract yourself from a situation.

What prevents teachers/schools from banning cell phones in their classrooms? I can't believe they are allowed.

Back when I was in middle school (2002?), some kid's cellphone went off (one of the earlier nokia models). The teacher freaked out called the principle had everything stopped to the point it was like a gun or something. It was confiscated, he needed to pay 80$, have his parents come down etc.

Probably parents am guessing? What if their is an emergency and they need to get a hold of their kids? :roll eyes:

Kids have survived forever in school without cell phones, I don't see any reason why they should be allowed right now. Check it into a basket upon entering a classroom.

that's why i could never be a teacher. kids are punks( i know, i was the same way) and I'd want to kick the **** out of all of them. it takes a special type awareness and patience to deal with it and she doesn't have it.

No punk is worth my career. She lost it. It doesn't matter what he could have said. He is not worth my job.

Seriously, that's what I remember too back in the late 90s. And that was when we just had dumb phones that did nothing.

Can't imagine smartphones would even be allowed in a classrooms today, yet the kids in that class just seem to be using their phones like they're just passing the time as they ride the train to work.

Can any teachers expand on the current policies for phones in the classroom?

On my campus kids can have them, but they are not allowed out. If you have yours out, it is taken up and sent to the front office. You have to pay a fee to get it back ($5-10). We also have 1-1 with iPads for every student. They are controlled and only certain apps are allowed to be installed. We have very few issues with either. Kids can have their phones out at lunch and before/after school. In some of the classes, teachers have racks for phones. When you come in you put your phone in your slot. That works pretty well. I teach technology and we will actually use them at times so on occasion they will be out in my room. It is acceptable if you are using them as a teaching tool. If not then they better not be out and/or in use. For the most part the kids are pretty responsible about it, but I also work in a district were the kids are pretty responsible about most things. We have had 0 fights this year and most of our discipline is over small stuff (no id's, won't remove hats etc).

As for the video, I know several teachers at Ozen, and not all the story is being reported (imagine that). No one is justifying what she did, but there is more that happened before and after the video starts and ends. Several of the kids in class have said she apologized afterwards and they had a discussion about it. There are over 30 kids in the class (the whole campus is overcrowded) and the district will not/can't afford to add teachers. The kid's mother teaches at the school, and the teacher and kid have a good relationship (not like that). I would guess she gets some sort of misdemeanor charge pleads out, and gets very little punishment. She will most likely either retire or be reassigned. My friends don't think the district will fire her though.

She blew her fuse, assaulted the kid, and then demeaned the handicapped in an attempt to insult the kid. As someone who used to be married to a teacher and someone who has teachers in the family, I understand how frustrating things can be, but come on. Being held accountable means being fired. There are all sorts of high pressure jobs with unfair conditions. At that level, when you mess up, you get fired.
