    if betances hits him with the ball he's out, but because he tried to lob it in he screwed it up. It's hard to get an obstruction call if you don;t actually hit the runner. It can happen but the umpire is usually looking for other things and not that.

    what are the consequences of 'playing under protest' and then their grievance turns out to be justified? Nothing, right? Or would they overturn a call and replay the game...?

    I think we are agreeing on this. I agree he was not running legally in the baseline path but got away with it with the bad throw by the pitcher.
