"The Editor in Chief of Süddeutsche Zeitung responded to the lack of United States individuals in the documents, saying to 'Just wait for what is coming next.'"

My prediction: either people will be apathetic yet again. Or 20th century capitalism will be broken. There can no longer be different legal regimes for the super-rich vs the rest of the world if all is lain to bare. This inconsistency threatens the principles of republican democracy to its core.

As far as this BBS goes, I'm waiting for the "trickle down" and "people won't have to create shell companies if taxes weren't so high" arguments.

For the general population, I don't know if it's possible to further decrease our confidence in the governing class any more.

I don't know anyone who doesn't try to (legally) minimize their tax bill

Not sure if the "scandal" is gonna be primarily a tax issue. I think the bigger question for a lot of these people are where the money comes from in the first place-- Did, for example, Putin's $2 billion stash actually come from legal means?

I don't think that many people will legitimately get mad if someone who make his billions legitimately (like Bill Gates) did some things to minimize his tax bill.

I'm sure everyone is shocked at your dramatic response lol.

So far all these documents report is that corrupt dictators are corrupt and that rich people evade taxes.

    My mind is blown.

I'll wait to see if there is anything that suggests something beyond tax evasion. If they can show that American leaders (or potential leaders) have participated in schemes to steal money from people, worked with some of these dictators to make money, etc. that would be a bombshell. If all they show is that rich people and dictators hired a firm to hide money that isn't going to be a big reveal.

I dunno, I'm far more interested in U.S. companies on the list.

I do get the feeling some people in panama are going to start finding polonium in their coffee...

On the one hand: obviously everyone knew this was going on.

On the other hand: scale, visibility and headlines are very important.

Hillary is so lucky with the timing.

Surprised at how little news exposure this is getting. Probably in on it as well.

Looks like Hillary will be involved so mainstream media will temper the exposure. Probably preparing unnecessarily complex slides singling out Putin right now.

Actually news here in Euopre exposure this a lot, very lot. maybe in US it is not so relevant as Mossack Fonseca did not have an office in US, thus it's biggest clientele were from European and Asian countries.

Agreed but Tax Evasion (illegal) and Tax Avoidance (legal) are completely different. We'll have to wait and see if anyone in the list so far did anything illegal.

Check out one of my favorite vids from British comedian David Mitchell. This rant of his is one of my favorites.

    Named in what exactly?

I know Northside Storm sees this as the downfall of modern society, but as far as I can tell the most scandalous accusation so far appears to be tax evasion.

We have members of Congress who have been re-elected after scandals over taxes.

Unless there is an accusation of money laundering or a hint that so called "good guy" western politicians have been collaborating with dictators and the like, this isn't any more significant than the numerous American politicians who have been busted for tax evasion, failure to pay taxes on properties, parking their boats in different waters to avoid taxes, etc.
