A hollow victory for Texas... easy victory, but who cares?

Playing teams like Rice benefits a team in two ways:

    1. Free wins.
    2. Giving back-ups experience.

Running up the score isn't nice. Nobody likes a team that's launching bombs while leading 56-0. But at the same time, there's no real point in running up the middle the entire game after the beginning of the 3rd quarter.

You know what's beneficial? Letting your 2nd team experiment with the offense. Believe or not, Vincent Young is eventually going to be the #1 QB of the Texas Longhorns. And somehow I think, that playing straight-up against even a bad team in a competitive game might somehow benefit him. Let him see what it's like to play D-1 football.

I was thrilled that VY got playing time. I was dismayed that it involved nothing more original than running up the middle and an occasonal scramble w/3rd team talent surrounding him.

Acting classless is bad. Experimenting with your 2nd team in the 3rd quarter is not classless.

Mack Brown seems like a good person. But I'm losing confidence in him as a coach by the game. He was out-coached against Arkansas. Against Rice, he failed to take advantage of the only benefits the game could possibly have conferred upon the 'Horns.

Mack Brown has his head so far up his $5 million dollar @$$, its disgusting. UT athletics should do us all a favor and fire him! Then Young would see the playing time he deserves, instead of sitting the bench while Mack remains true to his seniors at the cost of a win.

BTW can you tell I'm still pissed about the Arkansas loss?

If you take away the big-play, turnover-plagued second quarter, the score was 14-7 UT. I'm glad Rice was able to have success running the ball in the second half against UT. I didn't expect the Owls to win (after all, this isn't baseball), so I'm glad they didn't allow UT to add to the halftime lead. It was good to see that Rice was competitive in the second half.

Dave Ryan, the sideline reporter, hit the nail on the head. Over 90% of the recruiting pool in Texas does not qualify academically at Rice. In this era of win-at-all-costs college football, it is good to see Rice recruiting student athletes with character and ability in the classroom. Rice athletes are good ambassadors of the school, and that is all I ask of them.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Rice had limited success running the ball because the game was over.

At least my team (Boston College) that's limited by academic standards actually put up half a fight against their rapist (Miami) ;).

Besides, that wasn't responsive to the post, you conservative b*stard! ;)

lol, competitive in the 2nd half. yeah, you really took it to the 2nd and 3rd string while the offense didn't even attempt to run up the score.

all the cws highlights they kept playing during timeouts were kinda funny. hey, don't pay attention to this game, remember when something good happened? for some reason, the UT crowd was applauding like crazy for the team. i'm like hey, i don't have anything against rice and i'm glad it's still in texas, but lets not get crazy, i mean they did stop us from repeating.

like haven, i was pissed at mack. the same attitude that has him run it up the middle starting 2 minutes into the 2nd half is the same one that makes him such a wuss in big games. i would so like us to just steve spurrier or UH circa 1990 some team. like haven said, there's running up the score, and there's just running out the clock and gaining nothing from it. if you've got the 2nd (or 3rd by the end of the game) team out there and you're not just launching bombs, it's not running up the score. i wonder why mock isn't as good as he could be. maybe b/c we never let him into a game until there were 5 minutes to go last year, and when we did, we ran it every single play. and now vince, who may be the starter one day soon, threw i believe all of 3 passes today when he could've been working on the thing we're not sure about (passing) instead of just running qb draws and handing it off. and lord help us if we ever need nordgren.

oh yeah, did we throw it deep once? the pass to benson was about 25 in the air i think, and that was as deep as it got. we break roy's 100 yd game streak and don't even look at him in the 2nd half despite the fact he was in constant single coverage, while osu throws all day to rashaun and lets him break the ncaa record with 7 td's despite being up handily. and why? so we could get big rushing yards to say the running game looks good. it makes me sick. i mean pretend you have fans mack that might actualy wanna see the team try to score. you don't have to be super nice and just hand the ball back to rice each possession by running all 3 plays. they sure as hell didn't stop trying to score on us. i'm sure the rice players would've been scarred forever if we had gone deep to roy and hit for a 50 yd td. please, they're big boys, they can handle it.

and finally, who is anthony johnson? is it just me or is he not only faster than benson, but selvin young. i mean as soon as he would get the ball he was blazing and could cut back extremely quick. he looked like all of those backs that give us trouble. quick and shifty. i don't care what yards he got, b/c it was against a tired rice defense, but there was no denying how fast he was when he got the ball. is there a reason he doesn't get significant playing time (fumbles a lot, doesn't know the O?, something?). he looked so fast i think he could get to those holes we open for like .1 seconds whereas benson and young can't. i kept asking my friends if he was as fast as i thought i was seeing and they seemed to agree. thoughts?

What do you expect after we got our asses handed to us by Arkansas?

It's a numbers game in college. No hard feelings.

I would not go that low for a new coach. I hear Jackie Sherrill may be available soon...

    In all seriousness,

    * I, too, agree we are much better off today than 6 yeats ago.
    * Mack must fire his entire staff of coords at season's end even if they only lose one more game
    * If not then he MUST go!

Like yourself, I sat wondering, "who would be the next to fill the job?"

Not b/c I am a Horn, but it is just a fact. The Texas HC position one of the 4-5 top coaching jobs in college.

The UT job, which includes a GREAT recruiting base, great city and a seemingly unlimited amount of cash and fan support, there is not much more you could ask for unless you are Cocker, Stoops, or any HC for ND. Other than that, what?

There would be plenty of people (many better than Mack) who would accept this job.

The best soltuion to the issue is for Mack to continue to be the CEO, but clean house below him, take any power of game day decisions away from him and put people in charge who can get it done.

Does there anyone who thinks Mack will some way salvage this season thus saving Carl & GD's asses?

    Texas stopped playing at halftime.

If the 2nd half could be used as the final score, pat yourselves on the back for a 7-7 tie.

Just like when you couldn't play with us in 2002 when we beat you in the 2002 world series on the way to our title.

Rice sure does like to flaunt their success against UT, more than UT does against Rice, that's for sure.

Got back into town at around 8 tonight. I had a great time at Reliant last night. Rolled into the stadium with my buddy at like 6. Proceeded to slam about 7 Bud Lights while tailgating in the parking lot.

I didn't have tickets to this game, so I just walked around the entrance asking for extras to buy. I was pretty wasted at the time, and in stupid Indian accent (like Apu) I was yelling out asking for tickets. One of the Big Red chicks gave me her ticket for free, and we bought another for $20. These tickets were in the club level (section 335), and had a face value of $72, which was totally outrageous.

The club level is damn nice. Plasma TV's, carpeted floors, big couches, and like 3 or 4 bars. Bought a couple of Cokes, and finished a fifth of Crown by the end of the 3rd quarter. Stayed and sang The Eyes, and headed out to a party where they had free cans of Busch. The best part of the evening was eating a cheeseburger and hash at 3PM at Waffle House on HWY6 and Beechnut. :D

    :D :D

Hey, glad to hear you had a good time. On that Club Level, there is the identical setup on the other side of the field with the bars, TV's and so forth.

I found it quite ironic that is where most of the Horns (HornFans group included) were wanting to sit. The irony is that is the section I have season tickets to the Texans, and last season in the 2nd preseason game I told my brother that this section was like being at a Longhorn football game.

A bunch of older f*cks that are making a social out of it since its the in thing. They really are not into the game, clap on the big plays, and spend the rest of their time socializing then they leave early.

Sorry about that turning into a little rant...

Who cares about the RICE game, it meant nothing. Mack Brown aka George Walker Bush is still on the sidelines. Wow we ran the ball well against a Rice defense with holes wide enough to fill the gap between Michael Strahan's teeth. Big deal.

Personally as a fan and alum of UT, this game was kind of annoying. Like ok what does this prove? Gee we beat a cupcake WAC team, great accomplishment.

I hope we will commit to the run against KSU and OU. I hope Mack Brown and that Greg Williams character will commit to the run. These next two games are probably the most important games for this program in awhile. Lose any of these two, our national respect and interest (if any at this point) will become zero.

Lets get it together George Walker and Williams! Go HORNS!

    You may be making a grave error ! ! ! !

Clearly you are overlooking an opponent, and with this staff, that should not be done!
