Summer report card: Lakers, T-Wolves, Nets head A list

Sept. 12, 2003 By Mike Kahn SportsLine.com Executive Editor

The wheels are still turning in NBA front offices, even if plenty of general managers are still more concerned with pin than player placement.

But with training camp just a few weeks away, certainly enough time has passed to provide some insight into the good and bad stuff of this offseason.

There are plenty of winners and losers -- no different than the regular season -- so without further muddling the madness, let's get to it.

And keep in mind, Portland, New Jersey, Golden State and New York are all likely to make deals before or during the preseason. Toronto, too, is likely to step up.

That leaves us with SportsLine.com's subjective grades of the 29 teams, from the hiring of the 10 new coaches, through the draft and the second week of September.

Houston Rockets: After a decade of Rudy Tomjanovich as coach, the Rockets finally moved him upstairs and hired Jeff Van Gundy and moved into a new arena. They lost James Posey to free agency, but presumably Eric Piatkowski and second-year player Bostjan Nachbar will help there. The bigger question is how Van Gundy will help develop the young trio of Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Eddie Griffin considering Rudy T.'s main problem was that he allowed the inmates to run the asylum. The maturity and talent of Yao Ming should be the difference as they work toward getting back into the playoffs for the first time after a four-year absence -- the first time that has happened in 30 years. Unfortunately, they have done virtually nothing to upgrade the roster for V.G. Grade: C-minus.

Is a new coaches job altering personnel or working with personnel?

JVG has talent, not enough for a Championship. If we were to change the core players on this team, why would we need a new coach?

Pretty good analysis, especially for a national site.

on paper, sure we didnt improve. but what we lack in exciting moves we make up for in stability. everyone loves a good trade, but its not like compiling talent is going to cure everything that weve been frustrated about. id rather develop chemistry and see how that translates. its a team that wins a championship, not its collection impressive statistics.

actually i think everyones just stir crazy for something good to read about :p

A lot of people seem to assume that you have to do a trade/signing to be qualified as making a good move. But refraining from doing a trade/signing might also be a good move. Making a bad trade or signing a bad contract is worse than staying put.

they say finally moved him upstairs as if the last decade sucked or something. ooh, we underachieved for a year, thank god we finally got rid of him.

and yeah, mobley and francis hold us back but ming's massive 13/8 talent will really push us through.

Yeah screw that guy with his "C-". I've said this countless time before, WE ALREADY GOT THE PIECES IN PLACE! It was uneccessary for us to make a lot of significant deals. The Rockets are gonna win 50 this year baby, and it's not gonna take a big trade or free agent to do so. Our patience will start to pay off this season.

Considering our salary cap problems I think we have fairly well by getting Pike and Adrian. I would give a C+.

They should wait till the season starts, and till midseason they can start grading... Cuz they think the signing and the trading is a big deal but what about if those ppl get hurt, they act as if some of those signing are going to get them to the playoffs... poor poor editors and writers..

I think that with the addition of a new head coach, the core should remain the same. Sometimes you can do too much and ruin what you've got. We've got talent and it IS enough for a championship AB(IMONP). We've just got to play smarter basketball and develop chemistry.

Those of you saying the pieces are already in place or that CBS should lay off until midseason:

This is what journalists get paid to do. Notice the title was offseason moves grades, not grades overall or anything like that. The dude thinks our C- grade is because we lost Posey, added Griff, Pike, and 5 non-guaranteed contracts, and because we added JVG. It doesn't take into account the core or anything like that. JUST THE OFFSEASON MOVES. C- is quite generous in my mind. And if there were no offseason grades...then we'd hear more Jermaine for MoT, KG for Moochie, Rice for SAR rumors. So at least this is more legit than that crap.
