    That thing is a beast.

I like Isabel, the poster here and I take great umbrage at people calling her a "hurricane" and a "monster". Show respect, people!

    http://www.usatoday.com/weather/hurricane/history/hurricanes-strongest.htm

If this puppy hit land today it would be stronger than hurricane Andrew when it hit Miami.

it will weaken before it makes land fall, if it makes land fall. and that wont be till maybe thursday or later if it hits the carolinas.

if it goes to the NE it will be more like saturday AM

I am not totally worried about this one myself. not yet.

the eye as you guys have said is HUGE. it looks to be as far across as Puerto Rico is wide in that one image.

according to my meterology professors, a large eye indicates that the hurricane is not really all that strong. I know I know 160 miles an hour wind is sick, but if the Eye was tight It indicates the "health of the storm" to be better. hurricanes are their own entity. A tight eye storm will go where ever it wants. kind of like Camile did. that storm was amazing. search it out, its was one bad woman. anyhoo. a loose eye storm is more likely to be blown out to the north atlantic by prevailing winds.

I will let you know by Monday if I am getting worried though. :)
I do after all live on a little tiny island on the tip of long island. and when we get storms we lose houses, roads, and well land in general.

There aren't any high pressure systems moving in to oppose it. This could be seriously ugly.

And Manny, nice one. Heh heh.

The cats in the auto on the day they left
Their claws are so sharp, and they scratched up Jeff
When you coming home, he said "I don't know when"
"We'll probably be divorced by then"
"I told her to stop at 10"

Thanks, B-Bob. I try; maybe reading your posts and A-Train's are finally starting to help me with humor!:D

Actually, this thread has all kinds of potential for silly stuff and some of that has been evidenced already! But it is not complete until you, B-Bob, outtop A-Train's classic "Cats in the Cradle" lyrics!:D

:) No can do. I just do not try to step to the Train. In this particular case, we cannot make the pie higher.

Speaking of cats though, I wonder if they sense the pressure dropping before a big storm. Out here in earthquake country, the accepted myth is that cats know when a trembler is nigh. We all have stories of cats staying out of their houses in the 24 hours before a big quake. I don't know if I buy it. ... But if it's true, with 16 cats, The JB's have one of the world's most sensitive disaster detection arrays!

awww, thanks. :) Yeah, I figured I might need to change usernames or lay low for a while. :) I don't really resemble a Category 5 storm, no matter what my husband might tell you.

Actually, we're all blessed that this storm happened out in the middle of the water... kind of cool to think about, as long as it doesn't go near anybody.

    VOR,
the eye may be large, but in the shots I have seen on the news, it looks well-formed and tight...imo,the reason the eye looks so large is because of the size of the storm.

It could be disastrous wherever it hits, just because of the wind speed and the surge, as Im sure you know.

I havent seen any of the meteorologists discussing the influence of the Bermuda high, do you think it will help steer the storm more to the north? or has the high's influence diminished at this point?

one thing we all need to keep in mind, if this storm continues due west, it could cross over Florida and continue into the Gulf. We are not out of the woods as far as possibilities go.

    Hurricanes are still very unpredictable

Even though VOR has studied this subject in school, I was thinking the same thing. Isn't it more organized if the eye is well formed, rather than tight?

When the Hurricane's center begins to resemble that of a "Cat's Eye" the storm will enter its most dangerous state.

well formed is just part of being a strong storm. any cat 3 is gonna have a sice full eye. they have what they call a stadium eye. these stadiums actually resemble a stadium in that they create a bowl shape in cloud cover and are quite pretty.

this being cat 5 has an extremely well organized everything. but if the eye wall was of a smaller diameter this storm would be more impervious to sheering winds and cooler waters etc.
this by no way means this storm is a push over. it is a potential killer for sure. in fact I am sure some mariers will be lost no matter if it makes land fall or not.

and size of eye has nothing to do with size of storm. everything just outside the eye is just based on how much moisture is sucked up by the system. in theory a storm could fill most of the atlantic basin in overall size, but still have an eye just a few miles across.

the bigger storms just affect a larger area with flooding and also have a larger area with high winds. it does not mean the top winds are any greater.

we will see how this one develops. its moving at 9 miles an hour as it accelerates the storm, and the eyewall will change shape.
after today we will have a much better idea what we are facing. NOAA is flying through it today.

incidently i have talked to my workers today and lined them up for next week if we need to protect houses. also made sure they were ready for chainsaw duty.
we have 5 saws ready to rock. just need gas, lots of gas. but I do have a week to get ready.
