2. Which West playoff contender should make a deal at the deadline?

Elhassan: Houston, but as a seller. Dwight Howard's impending free agency (if he opts out) means Houston should start exploring deals for him. The Rockets can't afford to lose him at season's end with nothing to show for it (ask the Lakers about how that feels), and keeping him isn't going to result in a miraculous playoff run like we saw last year.

Houston should be able to get a good-enough haul to keep them competitive enough to make the playoffs this year, especially considering the extent to which Howard has been marginalized this season.

Ford: The Clippers, Grizzlies, Mavs and Rockets all should. None can get past the Warriors or Spurs for a title, and three of the four are getting pretty long in the tooth.

It's the toxic chemistry in Houston that needs the biggest change. The Rockets have a lot of talent but I don't see how this team wins anything together. Howard is probably the best candidate to move, especially given how the league is evolving.

Doolittle: Houston has been perplexing and another Rockets slump could mean no playoffs, as disappointing an outcome as a team has had in recent years. A shake-up may be in order. I'd consider cashing in Howard and turning the middle over to Clint Capela. Youth, energy and defense is what the Rockets need back, making Boston an attractive trade partner.

4. Which big-name West player is most likely to be on the move?

Elhassan: While I'm skeptical that any particular big name is likely to be moved, there's a strong case for Howard to be changing ZIP codes, as noted above. But again, that's still a long shot.

Doolittle: I'll go with Howard. Moving him would preempt the concern Houston must have about his opting out this summer, and the Rockets have a ready-made replacement on the roster. Howard could bring back a legit package of talent to help right away.

5. What is a trade you would like to see in the West?

Doolittle: Sticking with Houston, I'd love to see them land Anderson. Ty Lawson makes sense for New Orleans, both as a fit with Davis and for Alvin Gentry's offense. The Rockets can offer up Terrence Jones as an Anderson replacement.

If the Pelicans are looking to shake things up, they also could get Houston another bench scorer, such as Jrue Holiday, to provide what the Rockets hoped they'd get from Lawson. In this scenario, the Rockets could keep Howard.

Dwight Howard has a negative NRtg (-0.4) for the first time since his second year in the NBA.

Between those saying that Dwight sucks now and those saying that Dwight is the same he’s always been, there lies the truth: Dwight is a former superstar whose abilities to carry a large offensive load and protect the rim on defense are noticeably in decline. With free agency looming on the horizon, how much of this is Dwight, and how much of this is the situation he’s in?

So what's really going on here?

Dwight is certainly not alone among his Rocket teammates in negative NRtg territory, and D12 is barely even in it. I had my choice of players here, including incumbent MVP runner-up James Harden and his -1.7 NRtg which would’ve been an interesting—if not straightforward—topic of discussion. But the reason I chose Dwight was because of his past reliability in this statistic, and the fact that he continues to be middling as the season wears deeper into the year (his On and Off are a near uniform -1.7 On and -2.3 Off since the start of 2016, though he does have an NRtg of 1.4 under J. B. Bickerstaff). Plus, there’s so many variables to account for—something that makes the piece more fun to write for me.

For starters the Rockets as a whole have been incredibly disappointing this season. Dwight’s -0.4 is actually slightly better than the team average of -2.0, and the team is roughly three points per 100 possession worse without him versus with him this year. Still, last year D12 lead the team with a NRtg of 8.1, so this is quite the drop regardless.

It would appear that much of Dwight’s success this season is tied up with his utilization next to Clint Capela. The days of Dwight being a terror for opposing teams to finish over are, well, finished; Howard only contests 30% of all shots at the rim when he’s on the floor (the 3rd worst mark in the league among qualified centers), and allows 50.4% shooting according to Nylon Calculus—which computes to a slightly below average rim protector via their algorithm. Though Capela allows a slightly better 50.7%, his saving grace is that he’s able to contest 41.3% of all possible attempts. The problem is that despite starting 25 games together this season, the duo has only logged 291 minutes together (21.1% of Howard’s 1384 minutes this season), and the Rockets don’t exploit their 8.9 NRtg together nearly enough. Spacing issues aside, Howard needs Capela, as his NRtg falls to -2.8 without him. For comparison, James Harden and D12 net an almost break even NRtg of 0.2 together, and Dwight only falls to -3.1 when flying solo.

Nevertheless Howard’s rebounding remains elite, even if his offensive workload has decreased. Despite all the noise, Howard does remain one of the best rebounders in the league—his TREB% of 20.6% is still good for 5th in the league. On offense, Dwight’s post-ups are returning a PPP of 0.84, which means they are now certifiably almost average by NBA standards. However, this mark does manage to fall slightly short of 0.89 PPP, the average PPP for all halfcourt offense. What do you think about that, Dwight?.
In spite of all the numbers, Howard’s had a few unlucky games in the plus/minus column, most notably when he was reward for his 36/26 performance against the Clippers with a -4 in the box score. But that’s basketball, and that’s why I try to keep everything relative within the scope of the team.

Still, D12 is definitely quickly approaching role player status on the wrong side of 30, and is on track to play in only 65 games this season. Dwight’s back has never been the same since he left Orlando, and anybody who gives him the max he’ll attempt to demand this offseason will pay for it in the long run.

Exactly, dude doesn't challenge anything anymore and is constantly out worked on the boards by scrubs. Len, Plumlee, E. Davis, Adams etc.
