Man, I read it over the weekend before September. I couldn't put it down. He is funny as hell and lays the truthful smack down on certain folks.

Would someone who has conservative leanings enjoy the book? Just curious. I mean, is it about Politics in general, or just a Republicans/Conservatives bashfest? If it's the latter, I probably won't be interested; I can just read that here. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind taking a look and seeing what all the hoop-la is about.

    LOL Good point!

The book picks apart numerous Republicans (not conservatives -- BIG difference). Franken is *truly* hilarious, and I couldn't put the book down. Probably the best political book I've read this year.

He exposes countless Republican lies (and spin) and the book is amazingly well-researched. I was pretty surprised.

He should send O'Reilly a thank you card. I'll bet 3/4ths of his book sales are related to that silly publicity stunt....er, uh "debate" with O'Reilly. No such thing as bad publicity.

Personally, I think they're both boobs.

Sorry, but it is a bashfest. Of course, if you are curious why people accuse Fox News of not being fair or balanced, it's a worthwhile read.

I particularly like how he exposes Coulter with little effort. He has a passage from her "Slander" book where she accuses the Times of not thinking enough of Dale Earnhardt's death to print a story about his death until 2 days later with the first line being "His death brought a silence to the Wal-Mart." She was trying to claim that the Times thought nothing of NASCAR and it's fans and viewed them as tacky. Of course, right in the book there is a whole page with the Front page of the NYK Times with the date circled to show it was the day after Earnhardt's death and that there was an article right on the front page. The article Coulter sited was indeed printed 2 days after the death however, but it was a different one written by a Pulitzer Prize winning sports writer from Alabama. She was saying it was some new york liberal.

Also, one of the things she tried to use to prove that the media has a liberal bias was that she said that the Newsweek Washington bureau chief, Evan Thomas, was the son of Norman Thomas, a 4 time Socialist candidate for President. Franken shows that first of all, Norman Thomas ran for President 6 times, and makes a joke about why Coulter would not use that since it makes her case stronger, but it turns out that Thomas ran the first time in 1928 on a platform of Social Security. And to find out whether or not Evan Thomas, really was the son of this guy, Franken just calls him on the phone. Here is how the phone call went:

Al: Evan, thanks you for taking my call.
Thomas: No problem, Al. What's up?
Al: Was Norman Thomas your father?
    Thomas: No.

That sounds simple enough. But to protect my reputation for thoroughness, I didn't let Evan off the hook quite so fast.

    Al: Are you sure?
    Thomas: Yes
Al: And your father? What was his name?
Thomas: Evan Thomas, Sr. I'm a junior.
Al: Uh-huh? And your father, Evan Thomas, Sr., did he ever run for president?
Thomas: No, He was in publishing.
    Al: And you're sure?
Thomas:Yes. Al, is this about that Ann Coulter thing?
    Al: Yeah.
Thomas: I heard about that. Is there something wrong with her?

This is the kind of crap Coulter does. Bold face lying and Franken's book just exposes it. I can understand though, if people aren't in the mood to find out their talking heads are liars. I remember cringing when I found out, before I had read the book, that Franken had sent that fake letter to Ashcroft about trying to find out how he stayed abstinent. It was pretty low, but Franken apologized and when you read the book, you see it was a prank, not an attempt to mislead the public.

One of the important chapters in the book is where he tells you what really happened at the Wellstone memorial and how it was spun by the media into being a political rally. How did they do it, by only showing the clip of one of Wellstone's friends who went overboard while talking. Lots of people who criticized the event hadn't even watched any of it. Just pure bullsh*t.

I understand the move...not based on what has been said, but based on realistic expectation of reaction.

now that we're debating and discussing;) , I understand as well, but has that expected reaction come up yet? the only thing I see is people talking about the contents of the book. oh well, didn't mean to stir up anything.
