In todays addition of SI, they ranked Stevie a close second behind Gary Payton for best point guard in league. SI does some formula to compute player rankings and Steve's total was 49.4, .4 behind Gary at 49.8. Franchise was also ranked 18th overall. Jason Kidd wasn't even in the top 5, yet he started the all-star game. In case you were wondering the formula, it is {[2x(fieldgoals made+3-pts. made+asts+blocks+off. rebs)]+[1.5x(def. rebs+stls)]+total pts + FTM-(2xTOs)-(Missed FT+Missed FG+Missed 3-pts)}/games played. Its kinda long but I did a formula to find out what Mobley's rating was. He was 38.95, .05 behind Reggie Miller who was fifth in the league. Miller was ranked 41 overall(5th for shooting guards). Man, if Mobley made one or two more shots, he would be in the top five. How great would that be, two guards ranked in the top five in the league, in the same backcourt.

So it's not a ranking of point guard skills, but a general player rating formula. No special emphasis on assists or turnovers. That is why someone like Jason Kidd didn't rate so high. He is clearly an excellent point guard.

Reggie Miller is not better than Mobley. I think we here in Houston know that.

If the Rockets make the playoffs does Steve Francis get MVP consideration? I'd like to think so.

Good thing Turnovers did not count in that formula.

DaDakota, turnovers did count, -(2xTOs), but his turnovers are not any worse then most of the other top playas.

I agree with Tb-Cain, the formula for rankings was vague. Jason KIdd is a great POINT GUARD, while Steve is a great player. They even ranked Andre MIller of the Cavs higher then Kidd.

For one thing, jason kidd averages MORE turnovers than francis. I wasn't a fan of Jason Kidd when I lived near Dallas and Im not a fan of him now. He has never carried a team, has yet to improve his bad shot. He gets way too much credit for the success of the suns. Shawn Marion, Cliff Robinson, their role players, and Scott Skiles are the real people behind their success. I don't doubt that Jason Kidd is a good player, but he gets way too much credit in my opinion.

Booster...by MVP consideration the only thing writers are going to consider is whether Stevie merits a third place vote, and even that's going to be a big time stretch. The first two spots will probably go to Webber and Iverson.

I can. Steve should be No. 1. Gary Payton, for all the great things he can do on the court, is a cancer in the clubhouse.

As much as I love Steve, he's not the best PG in the league. That SI formula is jacked up -- remember 4 years ago when they proclaimed Terrell Brandon as the #1 PG?

It would be interesting to rate the league's PGs though. . . I'll have to go with:

    1. Marbury
    2. Payton
    3. Kidd and Francis tied
    4. Stoudamire
    5. Stockton

I like Mobley much more than Reggie, but Reggie is a much better all around player than Mobley and comes up better in the clutch. In fact, Reggie is one of the, if not the best clutch shooter in the history of the game.

Dane I totally agree with you. Reggie is getting older, so I would rather have Mobley if I was building a team, but Reggie is a big-time player.

I don't think they are trying to figure out who is the best guy. Pig Miller is a great guy to have in the clubhouse, but no one is going to put him anywhere near that list. The formula is designed to figure out who is the better basketball player.

No way to tell in either case. As GP's career comes to a close, he could be traded and end up being a minor player on a championship team. Steve could break his ankle next year and never play again. A prediction like that is based on absolutely nothing.
