Cato told to take his time in returning

At this rate, he may not qualify with enough rebounds to lead the league in rebounding this year. According to Cato, the coaching staff has told him to take his time returning especially with their win streak.

The following is an excerpt from a Houston Chronical (www.chron.com)/Jonathan Feigen article. It also contains a blurb about Rogers not returning for a while :

    ------------------------------

    Taking his time

Although Kelvin Cato went through the Rockets' conditioning-heavy workout Wednesday and is scheduled to travel with the team to Orlando after Thursday's workout, he does not appear close to returning to the court.

Cato has been out since Jan. 15 with a partially torn left rotator cuff and has played in only seven games this season. Although he still has pain in the shoulder, his conditioning could determine when he is ready to play again.

"Cato got some good running in today," coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I think conditioning-wise, he's a way off."

With the Rockets on a four-game winning streak and with Hakeem Olajuwon playing well, Cato said he has been told to take his time getting back.

"The coaching staff has told me it would be better for me to sit out right now and not rush back," Cato said. "We're doing well without me right now. As long as we keep winning, the coaching staff is going to give me as much time as I need."

Carlos Rogers has missed the last three games with bronchitis, and Tomjanovich said the center/forward is several days from resuming workouts.

Yeah, that crossed my so-called mind. Of course I'm always suspicious, usually to no end. Let's see, 8 days left til the trading deadline? I don't know if he'll be moved out, but his comments could be re-worded like this: "They're trying to trade my ass and don't want me to risk injury while they work the phones."

Imagine that a players trade value goes up while they are on IR [IMG]

Surely he can find a way to injure himself in the weight room or poke his eye out with Mooch's fro

Cato has about as much fire as the surface of the planet Pluto. I would deal him for a container of medical waste at this point. I am hoping for some sucker out there (hello Jerry Krause?) who will relieve the Rockets of their $42 million canker sore.

Catos ready to return, now. It's the coaching staff who thinks hes not ready.

He's not in shape. "He's a ways off" said Rudy.

Let me get this straight. We have a 7 footer, who is in his mid twenties, who is getting paid 8 mill a year and you want to release him?

No disrespect Cson, but that is beyond being comical. Im guessing you have'nt seen Jason Collier play yet.

Hey don't be ragging on JC! Besides Jason Collier does a decent job. I don't know if it is because he is white "unspectacular", but he does a good job with what he is told to do. And he has only been in the league for 4 and a half months. As much as I think Cato can be a Theo Ratliff-type center, he doesn't have ANY excuse for his laziness and his lackluster play and attitude.

I know this thread is not about Jason Collier but i must say something to these two guys who insist on standing up for Jason Collier.

Jason Collier is the most hopless big-man in the NBA. Jason Collier has not the slightest bit of potential. Name one man who is slower than Jason Collier, please? He can hit jump shots every now and then, but big freaking deal, so could Zerg Sweiker. Come to think of it Zerg Sweiker could probably out-sprint Jason Collier. Collier has the worst mobility I've ever seen in an NBA player. Advice for Colliers improvement. Two Words - Gene therapy.

I must also stand up for Collier. He is not a future star, but I think he has potential to be a great piece of the puzzle here in Houston. He won't break anyone down off the dribble, but if he can pull the opposing center out of the lane with his shooting range, our whole offense will click. Think about how ineffective Motumbo would be hanging out with Jason on the 3pt line. I can't understand why Jason's ALLEGED lack of speed would hamper his impact to this team. It's not like he's guarding Iverson or Allen.

Collier fits this team as a roleplayer VERY well. He's not making a ton, learns very well, and doesn't complain. He IS NOT the center of the future, but I don't think CD and Rudy intended him to be. He can be a good backup, and can run the PnR very well.

Name another 7'0'' 260 lb. big man with 3 point range making about 1 million.

    Umm, how about greg foster.

I hope and am confident Collier will turn out to be a better player than foster, but foster has excellent range as well.

    I read that as:

Cato will not provide any help when returning and doesn't have much desire to return anyways...

And Los has been smokin' too damn much of the Sherm.
