All while a filthy rich NFL owner bullied them through arbitration over proposed renovations to the stadium saying he needed $700 million instead of the $150 million that the city itself offered. Given that and the sheer lunacy of taxpayers funding elaborate stadiums for billionaires, how exactly is this St. Louis's fault?

NFL demands are the problem. They league and the owners just a bunch of assholes complaining about making money hand over fist while simultaneously crying poverty and saying they care about fans and players as they **** them over.

I hate St. Louis as much as the next Houstonian, but this is pure, unbridled horse****.

I feel for the Rams fans and the city of St. Louis because they were going to get hosed either way. With the Rams leaving, they lose their team and they're left owing money for a behind-the-times stadium that will now be without a primary tenant. I've been in the building a couple of times, and while it's not quite the dump that many would make you think it is, it's dark, cavernous, and because it was built right before tastes in the world of football stadium architecture changed, it feels 20 years older than it is.

And, if the team had stayed, they would have been saddled with a new stadium that would have cost the taxpayers a ton of money and that, frankly, wasn't all that impressive in the renderings. Once the "new" was worn off the stadium in a couple of years, unless the franchise got turned around and started to win big time in short order, I think they would have been in the same position a few years from now in terms of fan apathy and empty seats.

Having just moved back after living up there for a couple of years, I can confidently say that the biggest problem was simply that the city just didn't really support the team. They were a distant third to the Cardinals and the Blues in terms of fan following. Sure, the team has been bad for a while, and that had something to do with it, but they were really just a non-factor in the city.

It was their fault for designing the stadium with little regard to the needs of an NFL team. They built the stadium they wanted to pay for which saved money at the start but ends up costing money as time goes on because it falls behind the rest of the league stadiums as they are opened.

Yes. Billionaire business men make a lot of money. That's how they became billionaires. It's making sound investments and it would not have made financial sense for the Rams owner to commit the money in St Louis that he is willing to commit in L.A.

The city of Houston spent 289 million in public funds (hotel and motel tax IIRC) to build NRG. Was that a mistake? Was there not value in that investment? The investment for the city goes beyond the financial. Harris County owns NRG stadium and has (guesstimate) 100 events there a year. There is civic value in what a venue like that can bring to your city and to the happiness of your citizens.

I guess Nelly will have to find a new team to root for.

When the Oilers moved to Tennessee, did you guys stop supporting the team? I'm not sure how I would feel if the Texans, Rockets, or Astros moved

Yes - it's always a mistake. NFL only do this because they can - not because they need to. If no city was willing to provide funds, all the NFL teams would build their own stadiums - and they would lease them to other events to make money.

It's no different than local and state governments enticing corporations to move in exchange for tax abatements. The total number of jobs doesn't change between the two states, but the government gets less revenues and the business makes more money. It pits various governments against each other and works only because the government employees are giving away taxpayer money instead of their own, so they get all the benefits (claiming to bring jobs / teams / etc to your city) without any of the drawbacks you'd have if it was a private entity making sound financial decisions.

There were public votes to build stadiums for the Texans/Astros and Rockets. People could have voted it down but they saw the worth in their lives for the enjoyment that sports and entertainment has.

Beyond that, it's simple market supply and demand. There are a finite amount of teams and many more cities that see the value of having one and will compete with one another of their own accord. The people in those cities have a choice as to if they want to spend public funds or if they don't. If you want a team to be attached to a city and restrict their ability to relocate then have the cities purchase and run the teams.

This is simply wrong. At the very least, it's unsupported.

I feel like I should track down Ted Dinou and congratulate him for finally being (sort of) right after 17 years.

They need to scrap the Astrodome, it's just pointless and awkward looking next to Reliant.

I liked the plan the Texans and Rodeo proposed to make it an outdoor park.

Yes. I'm a fan of the teams with "HOUSTON" on their jersey, period. If you leave...you're dead to me.

I still believe this isn't over even after the Raiders situation is settled. I'm not convinced the Jags will still be in Jacksonville 10 years from now.

The Rams should have never left LA in the first place. You still have to feel for St. Louis fans as the team has been there for a generation now. I think they will figure something out and have the Raiders stay in the Bay Area (not Oakland specifically) long term. The Raiders are loved up there. Maybe share Levi Stadium? The NFL being back in LA is pretty awesome. Texans will play there in 2017.

Heard on the radio this morning on Mike and Mike that Kroenke is building the complex on 300 acres with his own money.

I'm pretty sure he lives in L.A. He should look at the glass half full, he gets to see his team live now.

The point is that the land is usually gifted to the owner by the city, with very little (if at all) taxes involved.
