    Patterson wants to leave Portland

Ruben Patterson has asked the Trail Blazers to trade him, but Portland general manager John Nash said the troubled forward most likely still will be with the team when training camp opens.

The major roadblock: Even if a team is willing to consider Patterson, his contract has four seasons remaining, and he is scheduled to earn $5.45 million this season.

"Because of the length of his contract and the nature of his contract, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of interest," Nash said. "I've explained to Ruben it's very likely that he will not be traded. And I think his agent, Dan Fegan, is keenly aware of that, because I think he's canvassed the NBA as well to determine what level of interest exists."

Patterson, who could not be reached for comment, has sold his Tualatin home and moved his family to his native Ohio. He also has maintained a residence at a hotel near the Blazers' practice facility in Tualatin.

The Blazers begin training camp in less than a month. Rookies and free agents are scheduled to report Sept. 29 for a three-day minicamp. Veterans are expected to report Oct. 2, and twice-daily practices start Oct. 3.

One reason for his trade request is that Patterson doesn't want to be Zach Randolph's teammate in Portland. At a practice last season, Randolph sucker punched Patterson while Patterson was being restrained by two teammates. It began with a skirmish between Patterson and Qyntel Woods, and Randolph was coming to Woods' aid.

Patterson suffered a broken left eye socket and missed three road games because of the injury.A trade would end Patterson's controversial career in Portland. He is a registered sex offender in Oregon, resulting from a 2001 case in which he entered a modified guilty plea to charges he sexually assaulted his children's nanny while playing for the Seattle SuperSonics. He also faced domestic abuse charges since coming to the Blazers, but those were dropped.

Patterson is on probation and is required to notify authorities any time he travels out of state.

Fegan did not return calls to his office on Thursday and Friday.

Last season, Patterson averaged 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 21.2 minutes in 78 games.

Wouldn't he be a good fit starting at SF?

Also another article from another site:

Houston - The Rockets small forward troubles could be aided by adding Ruben Patterson of Portland, who has recently asked the team to trade him. Patterson has some ugly baggage that would follow him to town, but he would bring the Rockets the kind of high-energy, defensive-minded small forward that they crave.

A bench player with an anger management issue. That's all we need.

you do realize ruben patterson chased his kid's babysitter around the house - johnson jangling - and attempted to force her to blow his, um, joint?

why on earth would you want a criminal of that nature on a impressionable team trying to gain chemistry? have you had some crack today?

Not to mention, he went on record in the playoffs referring to himself as "The Kobe Stopper." The next game Kobe lights him up for like 40-something points.

OK, I can understand the fact that every 2 days, somebody has to start a thread that says "Let's trade for Jermaine O'Neal/Rasheed Wallace" because those players are actually decent. Don't like it, but can deal with it.

But when people start threads every two days about trading for untradable, undesirable, unwanted, unloved, unredeemable, unusable thugs/losers/miscreants/malcontents like Rapin' Patterson and Anthony Mason, I just have to go

Please listen: certain players in the NBA reach a point where they become problematic cap wasting nobodies and are just unacquirable in basically any circumstance except as salary filler to be immediately waived afterward if possible, though it's usually not as their contracts are guaranteed. Rapin Patterson is one of those players.

Though I usually oppose picking up thugs, I'm not too worried about Patterson's impact on chemistry. I think it would be fine, really. Everyone likes to dog him about the rape, but I don't think that's a big deal for the team. His fight with Randolf and Woods is a bigger deal, so I'd want to look at that pretty carefully. I wonder, though, if that situation wasn't mostly born out of a chaotic lockerroom situation in Portland, generally. Not saying that Patterson is a good guy, but that maybe he wouldn't really be so much trouble for the Rockets.

Then again, his salary is too large and his contract too long to be accomodated. So, no.

Give me a break, name one SF on our roster better than him?

Despite this, I don't think we have the proper players to reach a deal with them. The only players I'd be willing to give up for him are: MoT and Moochie.

I'd be very very interested in making a Rice for Patterson and McInnis swap though. That would complete the roster too.

    Yao/Cato
    MoT/Griffin
    Patterson/A Griffin/Boki
    Mobley/Pike
    Francis/McInnis/Moochie

This gives us a VERY deep roster which would in turn allow us to majorly cut down on Steve and Cuttino's minutes. Who wouldn't be comfortable with this team cleaning up a blow out safely:

    Cato
    Griffin
    Griffin
    Pike
    McInnis

We'd also be adding some much needed toughness, as well as the ability to play Steve more at the 2.

Wel, what-do-ya-know....It also allows us to ship Cuttino and another player off for a real PF. Well I'll be damned.

    Ditto to what Sane said.

This guy would absolutely bring this team together.(at least on the court) Obviously the fight is a major concern, but this is Portland we're talking about here. With the attitudes they have collected up there a fight is bound to happen every now and then. We don't have that problem here, in fact we have the exact opposite problem here. We seem to be apathetic. JVG has proven he can take these "cancers" and make it work, maybe he can do the same here.

If you can make a deal work where you don't touch Steve, Yao, EG or Cat, I'd say do it. Problem is I can't see even Portland taking a crappy deal like whats left.
