If it wasn't for a blown holding call on Ricky's 50 yeard run, they wouldn't have won the game. Stevens is a patheitc excuse for a football player. It's his job to be the last man and make sure that a 20 yard gain doesn't turn into a td. He doesn't do his job. he needs to be cut.
Exactly- Mike Doss went in the second round and he had a pretty decent debut for the Colts yesterday (started the game). So I think you can get a quality safety in the 2nd round, although I don't honestly know who may be available next year.
How about if there is a safety available that is better than both Ed Reed and Roy Williams. If the Texans have a pick in the 6-10 range Sean Taylor is a guy they should consider. Check out this scouting report from HPF.com.... Free Safety Sean Taylor College: Miami Year: Junior Height: 6'3" Weight: 225 Birthday: April 1, 1983 Strengths: Sean Taylor may have been born on April Fool’s Day, but this setup of a player who can cover like cornerback and hit like a linebacker is no practical joke. Taylor’s impressive size-speed combination has many labeling him as this year’s version of current Texan Andre Johnson, a freakish-sized athlete with freakish-sized talent. Taylor, who also runs for the Hurricane track team, should easily post a 4.4 time in the forty when given the opportunity. Playing running back as well as defensive back in high school, Taylor set a Florida state record for touchdowns. No longer on offense, Taylor has still found a way into the endzone for the Canes on defense and special teams. Taylor fits right in with Miami’s aggressive style of defense, one that looks for interchangeable safeties who are able to play the run as well as they play the pass. Taylor does both exceptionally well. He can drop the hammer on a ball carrier, and he can ballhawk a pass when he gets the chance. Taylor plays all over the field, showing off fabulous range in coverage and totaling high tackle numbers. Areas for Concern: Taylor has few weaknesses, but he’s a little rough around the edges in more ways than one. Still getting bigger, he needs to continue to refine his skills, especially in man coverage. He’s also been a bit hard headed according to his teammates, and they’re not just talking about how he hits. Taylor should be able to overcome those rough parts with another year of experience and maturity. Taylor hasn’t suffered significant injury since becoming a Hurricane, but he did arrive at Miami somewhat unheralded because of a hip injury he suffered as a junior in high school. Given his impressive play as a high school senior and last season as a sophomore, the injury does not seem to have any lingering effects. Also, of all the great things Taylor did last year, his most memorable moment came during the Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State. After making a key third quarter interception in the end zone, Taylor chose to run the ball out, hoping to score a touchdown and knot the game at 14-14. Instead, Ohio State’s Maurice Clarett stripped him of the ball at Miami’s 28-yard line, setting up a Buckeye field goal for a 17-7 lead. How Does He Look in Steel Blue? The Hurricanes think Taylor will be the best safety to have ever played at Miami, and that list includes former first round pick, Ed Reed. Compared with Reed, Taylor is about four inches taller, 25 pounds heavier, and a step or two faster. Reed was an integral leader of a championship team, something Taylor has yet to be, but Taylor has more ability and a bigger upside. A better comparison than Reed may be with former Oklahoma safety Roy Williams. Taylor is a few inches taller than Williams and may even be a bit faster, so Taylor has the potential. The Texans need a safety with Taylor’s size and range. Despite playing a position that is usually ignored in the early half of the first round, that kind of package will go high in the draft, and more than a few scouts are already rating Taylor as a top ten pick if he continues to improve in 2003. Expect Taylor to give serious thought to leaving Miami early for the 2004 NFL draft, and if he does, expect the Texans to give serious thought to using their first pick on another Hurricane. Sean Taylor #26 at Miami has those Roy Williams qualities and would be a great fit. But he'll probably go high in round 1 like Roy did.
Sorry Shade, I didn't see your post before I shot mine. The Texans are surely scouting him and/or 10 other guys on that team.
i have to agree, stevens sucks...but in general, both our safeties aren't that great...brown played an ok game, but he missed some tackles too.....as for stevens, he's lucky that other guy that was gonna beat him out broke his arm during preseason.......but ya'll are right....if u know your the last resort...before the opposition scores....u don't go gambling and flying/arm tackle ppl....u contain them and make the stop/etc.. ya, but the dude sucks....thats all..... I cut him on my Texans team in Madden 04 a long time ago.....he never made it out of training camp..... lol
Can anybody come up with a list of recently cut/free agent Safties that are available. I know that Lamont Thompson who was a 2nd Round choice last year I think was cut last week and snatched up by the Titans. He might have been a bust and must be a tool to get cut so early in his career , but at least he allegedly has potential.

Next year's draft will be interesting: although we are not completely solidified at many positions, it seems that most of the glaring weaknesses from season 1 have been fixed. I say we go for a stud safety (I like Taylor from Miami as well) with our first pick. I can't think of many can't-miss CBs in the college game right now; none better than Taylor, at any rate. I think Gamble, the two-way WR/DB for OSU could slip to the 2nd, or even 3rd round for the Texans. Stevens is a not a good player, I agree. A bum...a little harsh, but still agreed. I feel sorry for him (he's like Mooch, everyone loves to hate him). All he needs to do is work on his damn tackling; he seems to be rather intelligent in other aspects of the game.
Bishop, Blaine (Cut) Philadelphia Eagles UFA is Blaine Bishop still free agent? i know the dude has seen better days.. but he would be upgrade over Stevens.
There's a bunch of good CB's, Gamble, Nathan Vasher from Texas, Derrick Strait from OU, and a couple more. Hopefully they will get one as Glenn is starting to get up there in years.
****!! He's available? That's weird, Maynard. I wish they would sign him back to Houston....former Oiler to the new revamped Texans!
Yeah, they need at least one ex-houston oiler to suit up for a few games if only for publicity's sake. And he can't be worse than Stevens. Hell, his former all-pro Oiler backfield mate, Marcus Robertson, is also available. He had a devestating year in the Buddy Ryan defense back in 93. He was a destroyer that year. I don't think he made the pro bowl in a grave injustice but made a bunch of all pro teams.
Gamble is still a Jr so he may not come out this year. Gamble is a great athlete but his technique needs lots of work, that leads me to believe he'll be back for his senior year just to have another off-season to work on technique, especially if OSu can bring back a couple of former players to work with him (Shawn Springs, Ahmed Plummer, etc) Again you may be right but I'm guessing you may have to wait until 2005 to draft him!
I didn't see the game this week, but let me guess: Stevens was awful and missed tackles on all of NO's long gains and TD's? Am I right?
Actually a Saints WR pussed him on his face and got called for Offensive PI. Then he did miss a tackle which resulted in additional yardage for a receiver. Who was supposed to cover Joe HOrn- thats why I want to know
