An actual strategy for identifying and pursuing Yao as the W's most desirable FA
    Posted by Chris L on 2003-08-23 12:57:28

The overall approach/philosophy should be: Yao (and Duffy, Chinese officialdom), the Bay Area and Golden State is absolutely the ideal location for you to play out the bulk of your career in the states. Here are the steps to take:

    1. Make sure they have max caproom available for the 2006 offseason (I believe this is when Yao becomes a restricted FA).

    2. Make it clear, without tampering, that the W's will have that max caproom -- and that Yao would be at the very top of their list (just like SA made clear they would have caproom and that Kidd was at the top of their list). Make sure Yao, Duffy, and Chinese officials understand that.

    3. Have W's personnel/scouts -- including Rowell, Mullin, and Musselman -- give clinics and establish relations with Chinese basketball officials (like Donnie Nelson always has done in Europe).

    4. A make-or-break point will come when Houston tries to extend Yao in the 2005 offseason. The W's will have had to establish themselves as a very desirable counter-option in order for Yao and Duffy to resist the extension.

    5. In the next 2-3 years, *be better than Houston.* Get competitive. Make the playoffs. So that Yao, Duffy, and Chinese officials will see: Yao will actually be on a better team and will have a great future there. This will be tough (since Yao already is making Houston good) -- but it's a good competitive objective for Musselman. And, of course, the W's should be aiming to make the playoffs anyway.

    6. If Yao resists getting extended in 2005, *really* recruit him in 2006 -- the whole Bay Area cultural scene, the whole fan base here. Suggest trades with Houston (like draft picks) that help Houston, but do not gut the W's entirely. Take an SA approach: if we get our one main piece, we can fill in the blanks. Keep Dunleavy, for sure (if he's developing as expected). But at the same time, offer Yao a *one* year max contract. Make it one year since Houston can match.

    7. Then, of course, the next year, when Yao's unrestricted, offer him the max deal.

Have max cap space and make the playoffs?

    :D :D :D

This is tooooo r****ded for any replies. What makes it especially funny is that we are talking about the Warriors here! Even if they got Yao they would probably trade him back to us for Nachbar, Cato and a Tropical Fruit Bubblelicious.

I know right. Maybe GS should just invest in cloning and try to clone Yao Ming. They have a better chance that way I think.

sure...he can simply not accept the max extension. play one more year at his current contract then become a free agent. i dont know if he become a restricted free agent or not then? if he was then i believe we have the right to match any contract given to him by another team.

"Be better than Houston"? Hilarious. The Rockets might as well pursue a strategy of "being better than San Antonio" so that Tim Duncan will sign here, so that eventually we will be better than San Antonio.

another option they can try is signing rudy t as their coach.... Beat the rockets into the playoffs... hmmmm... possible uhmmm maybe but not likely. We'll make play offs with yao this year that's for sure. Let's just see how well our new boys help improve the team this year...

All these based on the assumption of Chinese officials having a say on where Yao should play.

Well if he's restricted...then we just match it!

There is a possibility of him leaving....

But yeah...we could come up with "an actual strategy for identifying and pursuing" Tim Duncan...if we have time...

Well if he does say he wants to go to Golden State....then we better get some good stuff in return. Don't just let him walk!

    That's in 3 years....

I have a vision that Yao will lead Rockets to two more rings, then he will move on.

This is not some sort wild fantasies after a two 6-packs. There are many similarities between Hakeem & Yao, but Hakeem had several years college experiences in USA while Yao came in straight away. Already Yao's showing his great passing ability & some other intangible court talents; observing this I boldly claim:

    YAO will bring RINGS

The Rockets can offer Yao more than other teams can offer him right?

If that is the case, we would have Team Yao on our side too.

I really don't think Yao will ever go anywhere. REALLY. Believe me when I say Les Alexander and Carroll Dawson will bring the Bay Area population to Houston before they let him go over there.

We will make the playoffs this upcoming season, and Golden State will not. Then all of this will become bull****, because there's no way he'd go to a non-playoff team.
