1.) Do you jog or run? 2.) Do you ever use a treadmill? If so, which one and how is it? 3.) How far do you run usually? 4.) What benefits have you gained from running consistently over time? 5.) What are the best running shoes? The reason I ask these questions is I recently started running daily. I only run a mile a day now currently but I also ride a bike for 30 minutes daily at medium-to-high intensity. Since I'm just starting out, I have to better build my endurance and speed. Plus, I'm not at my ideal weight currently so obviously I'm trying to shed a few pounds. I run on a treadmill currently because it tends to be more tolerant on my feet and body than running on pavement or paved trails. My treadmill is a historic TrimLine and has the base features(no programs, no iFit compatibility, etc.). It gets the job done and works so I see no need to buy a new one currently. Plus, it was a free hand-me-down from a non-user who let it collect dust. I am currently looking at New Balance > $100 shoes but I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones are crap. I was hoping maybe you people's input could help me. I just want to get a feel for who runs here, what treadmills are used(if any), what shoes are best, and how it has affected your health/life. I know there are some hardcore runners here. Even if you only run a mile or two a day, then you should still be better off than if you didn't run at all eh? I guess I don't feel the need to run 7 miles a day unless I'm training for a marathon or just wanting to prove I can. I think the most I've ever run at once is 4 miles on a previous running program two years ago. thanks, Surf
1.) Do you jog or run? Yes, but not as much as I want to. 2.) Do you ever use a treadmill? If so, which one and how is it? At 24 Hr. Fitness, but don't own one. 3.) How far do you run usually? I run for 30 minutes on the timer. Usually ends up being 5.5 miles or so. 4.) What benefits have you gained from running consistently over time? Energy, and a better running game on the basketball court. At least, I can maintain being able to keep up with the younger gazelles I play against all the time. 5.) What are the best running shoes? For my feet, Adidas. I have tried about all of them though....NB, Saucony, Asics, Mizuno, Brooks. Nothing fits my feet as well as Adidas.
1. yes 2. i have..particularly when i used to live in an apartment and had a fitness center. i liked it because there was a tv over it..so you could get lost in a game or some tv show while you're running...gets your mind off the fact you're running. 3. right now, just about 1.5 to 2 miles...3x/week. 4. benefits? i'm hoping it's keeping me healthy! i think you just generally feel better if you exercise some. 5. i wear reebok running shoes...but i have no particular preference, actually.
That is like less than 6 minutes a mile! I am actually training for the Houston marathon. I run 4 days a week. Three days for time 35 - 55 minutes each time & 1 day for distance (currently 9 miles, goes up each week). I also play b-ball once a week (b/c of running, I like to play more). I have noticed a definite improvement in my game!! I don't notice much difference in the shoes, so long as it is a decent pair. Anybody else traininig for the marathon??
Right, but keep in mind this IS on a treadmill....which is much easier being in the AC, less intensive, and less strenuous on the feet and knees. Damn, I sound like an old man.
This depends on your running style/habits. If you live in Houston, I can recommend the Fleet Feet on Rice Blvd in the Village as having excellent customer service for helping you select what's best for you. There's an older guy (looks like a runner) who owns the place (I forget his name), he is really knowledgeable and very good at figuring out what you need. The are pretty busy on Saturday's, though. I also recommend buying their rather expensive double-lined socks. There are cheap versions of these now, but the originals are silky and about $9 per pair (I think). They are very helpful for eliminated friction that causes blisters and calous's.
Even so...that's damn good. I couldn't dream of running that far in that amount of time. At least...not for a good while. You don't sound like an old man. I do.
I'm training for the Chicago marathon. I'm running about 35 miles per week now. I will occassionally run on the treadmill at the gym if I am running 6 miles or less. My thinking is that it may help to have an occassional workout that is easier on the joints. I also like to work out with weights while I am there. As for shoes, there is a New Balance outlet next to my gym so I go there and find the shoes that fit the best. Prior to becoming a New Balance customer, I faithfully used Nike Air Pegasus shoes.
1.) Do you jog or run? Been running since 1979. 2.) Do you ever use a treadmill? If so, which one and how is it? No. 3.) How far do you run usually? 6 miles. 4.) What benefits have you gained from running consistently over time? cardio, weight, and (most importantly) relaxation/stress relief. 5.) What are the best running shoes? I like Saucony (smooth ride, big toe boxes) and asics. Every runner is different. Fleet Feet recommended by hp is good place to get advice, but not the cheapest place in town. The good thing about NB is that they come in widths and don't change their models so often that you keep having to find a new one that you like. Buy new shoes often. Run on a dirt track (Memorial Park, Rice, etc.) if you can. Have fun.
man, running on a treadmill makes me much slower than on the track at UT. at home, running a 9 minute mile is really damn good yet at the track an 8 minute mile is just damn good and today i just broke my record and ran one in 7:30 (i know, i'm slow). the fastest i ever ran 3 miles was 25:40. i try to either run or play bball 3-4 times a week, as long as the bball gets in enough running for me. i only use the treadmill at home. i try to always run at least 2 miles if i'm gonna run and will go for 2.5-3 more often than not at UT. i definitely can handle playing basketball longer at a high energy level than i could before i ran more. plus i can run longer distances faster than before (not sure if i'm any faster over short distances). it's kinda cool to outlast my skinnier friends when we go play bball and they're wheezing while i'm still going strong. and i'm sure i'd weigh more if i didn't run. no preference on shoes. i usually just buy cross-training shoes and they serve as my everyday shoes and then eventually get downgraded to bball/running shoes when the old bball/running pair finally wears out.
I ran the Chicago marathon in 2001! An awesome experience, so good luck to you! While I do almost all my running outdoors, i think treadmills are great. Not quite as much value for effort, but good execize none the less. My shoes are Mizuno wave - great for me, but take heyprtner's advice and go to good store. For the best results, try and do 2 shorter runs a week (<5miles) and one long one. Finally, the most important advice - try and stay off the concrete - BAD for your body. Asphalt, gravel or grass is the way to go.
