Really great stuff here- just one note. Luke saying "the force is strong with my family...i have it..my father has it and...my sister has it" is just for the trailer- it was a line from Luke in ROTJ when he was revealing to Leia that he was her brother. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MDYX_PgorRY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
He says you have that power too in that same clip to Leia. It's all the same exact lines put in the trailer.

My only two problems with this awesome movie was fan service and being too obvious with setting up spinoffs and sequels. Disney has so much riding on this that it had to be a great movie but they also had to compromise the movie by fitting in as many characters as possible from their planned spinoffs. If the characters in the spinoffs have no connection to the big movie they won't be legitimized. As a result the movie is full of characters that are pointless or under used. I mean take Poe Dameron. They spent 99% of the time with him setting up his character. He had very little to do with this story. Could have been replaced by a faceless pilot or not existed. All of his screen time was just to establish his character for future movies.
I couldn't disagree more. I'll put my thoughts in spoilers, just in case. Spoiler Honestly, it makes perfect sense to use this movie to "set up" characters like Poe for future movies. This movie was about more than Poe, or even The Resistance. I think Poe served just enough purpose. If they had used a random pilot, I wouldn't have been as invested in hoping he survived the attack to destroy the planet. To me, you don't have to make EVERY character come full circle in the first movie. As a matter of fact, doing so would take away time to connect with the "main characters" like Rey (loved), Finn (REALLY loved), and Ren. If they were just trying to set Poe up for future movies, then I'm completely ok with them leaving me wanting more of him. It makes perfect sense. Now, if they don't use him much more in the next movie, I'll be disappointed.
I don't think you understood my argument. I know it makes sense to use this movie to setup future movies. That is exactly what I am saying. I am also saying it takes away from this movie. The scene you think happened didn't happen. You are creating this tension in hindsight. It could have easily been a random pilot. He only exists in this movie to setup other movies therefore these are not spoilers as he has nothing to do with the plot. I agree any more with him, any tension causing scene, would have taken away from the story. Because he had nothing to do with the story. i am judging this movie, as a........movie. Not a trilogy, or a universe, because all I have is the movie.
Oscar Isaac was supposed to be in this more but had commitments to a broadway play that almost forced him to drop out. JJ wanted him for the role so they were able to work around it and keep him on board.

Just saw it and LOVED every bit of the movie. Agree with all the positive comments here, 2nd best movie in the franchise and incredibly well-made. The acting was extremely good, didn't see any movies with the main actors and had my doubts, but they really delivered. Regarding Poe: Love the actor and character, think he'll play a great role in the next two movies and be somewhat similar to Han, think he'll become one of the leaders of the resistance.
Here’s the twist. Spoiler You've been warned Spoiler It will be Rey (Luke Skywalker's daughter) who will turn to the darkside! Kylo Ren will see the light and be redeemed. Snoke (Darth Plagueis) real target was Rey all along. He was just using Kylo to get to Rey. He knows she’s more powerful in the force. He thinks Rey’s force abilities hold the key to keeping himself alive. Snoke will tell her that Luke abandon her as a child and she will hate Luke for it! You can see the anger and rage in the interrogation scene and while she’s fighting Kylo Ren. Luke will attempt to save Rey, but it won’t work. Luke will have to kill his evil daughter to save the galaxy. Episodes 8 and 9 will be way darker than 7.
To those who have seen Ex Machina, the 2 guys in that movie are Poe and General Hux. They are almost unrecognizable from that movie to this one. They really casted the hell out of this movie. Can't think of one character that wasn't played very well. My only really problem character wise Spoiler Was how inconsequential Captain Phasma was. I'm sure they are setting her up for a larger role in the sequels, but they could have given her a better intro. Much like ESB, I think the sequel is gonna have the 2 leads split up. Rey/Luke will be doing the Jedi thing, while Poe and Finn will be doing something else. Kylo will also be in training, which would leave room for Phasma to have a larger role.
Spoiler I also think she will weild a double bladed lightsaber. She was really handy with that staff on Jakku. I'd be more surprised if she turned to the dark side than if she has a saberstaff, though the thought crossed my mind when she used the dark side to defeat Ren
Spoiler The force awakens poster hints that she's turning to the dark side. Look how her staff lines up perfectly with Kylo Rens lightsaber.
