Spoiler You know the way I look at it, Star Wars has always been a story of destiny and how fates are intertwined. If Rey is actually Lukes daughter, it makes sense for her to experience the same "loop" per se and walk the same fate as Luke did. I think if you look at it this way, it makes a lot more sense, and this is probably how JJ wanted it to be.
Spoiler I think your pretty much dead on here. In fact a lot of the hardcore fans picked up on a lot similar/cyclical themes between Rey and past events from Luke's experiences: Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsLeaks/comments/3xasoq/why_rey_is_lukes_baby_girl/
I saw it this morning at our local Drafthouse in 3D and they did a nice job. No headache afterwards and you aren't "hit over the head" with 3D stuff. You know, 3D scenes that obviously exist so they can (drum roll) be in 3D! Excellent job by Abrams. Add me to the list of fans that thought the extensive use of sets instead of strictly computer generated effects was a brilliant idea. The flick has that "rough around the edges" feel that the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back had. Gone is the slick CG Lucas not only used everywhere in the "prequels," but was imposed upon the original 3 films. His attempt at "cleaning them up" also removed a lot of the soul so many of us loved, that gritty "Hey, these are real people doing real things on alien planets - far out!"
No it doesn't. GotG was just fine, all its own, it's not a competition. You just have some bug stuck up your butt about Star Wars, ok, we get it. Give it a rest.
Apparently the novelization is out on amazon now and it includes some more details that didn't make it into the movie. Spoiler https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsLeaks/comments/3xeoow/tfa_novelization_moar_info/ (If you read through the comments some more details are given there as well.)
It's subjective. It's an opinion like any other movie. I liked the movie. Just not over the moon for it.
No, I haven't seen the movie. I also never saw any of the prequels. However, my opinion is that another star wars is pointless. The first 3 star wars were magic (and more importantly) self contained. I guess there are a contingent of geeks and sci-fi nerds out there who love to debate nonsensical things in star wars and new characters are like candy to their ears. For me, what is the point. Luke won. Vadar did not. End of story. Like someone else said, I'm more interested in seeing the next guardian of the galaxy than I am seeing another star wars with character I don't know about, or care about.
+1 on Guardians being better than TFA but I rate this film ahead of Return of the Jedi and only behind Empire. I wish JJ was directing 8 & 9.
Spoiler I disagree. I don't see Luke being her father simply because of the jedi staying unattached -- e.g. Anakin falling to the dark side after falling in love with Padme in spite of the jedi teachings. I'm thinking she has to be Leia's daughter and Kylo's half-sister. Han and Leia seemed sort of estranged, so my speculation is that Han isn't her father, and perhaps this all ties into Kylo seemingly knowing of Rey, and perhaps part of Kylo being lured to the dark side even as Luke's padawan. It also may help explain why Rey was left behind on Jakku. So Luke would be her uncle. Given the cyclical nature of this film in relation to A New Hope, Rey's realization that Kylo is her brother would be very similar to Luke learning that Vader is his father.
Definite props to John Boyenga. He and Adam Driver were great. I remember him from Attack the Block! Glad he got a role in such a huge movie.
