Maybe it's my age, but Earl will always be my all time favorite Houston (or any other) athlete. I had the Earl lunchbox, the Earl Ponys, the Earl t-shirt, Earl jersey, Earl posters, even the Earl 'theme song' (biiiiiig Earrrrrrrl) on 45. As great as the Rockets championships were, I don't think anything will ever compare to the Luv Ya Blue era. Great time to be a kid in Houston. *sigh*
It all depends on your preference in sports, I believe. As corny as this sounds, 1995 was somewhat inspirational for me. I don't think I've witnessed anything quite like it, except for maybe the Denver Nuggets in 1994. I just can't remember another time when I was literally shocked at the outcomes of playoff series. Beating Utah, in Utah, in Game 5? Beating Phoenix, in Phoenix, in Game 7? Borders on the surreal. Now, when I think of difficult tasks, in addition to the great example the folks set for me, I honestly do think back to that time as a means for motivation. Silly, but it's the God's honest truth.
I wonder how different things would be if the Oilers didn't have Dan "Passed (to the wrong team)-orini" or a Kenny Stabler that had already been beaten down and made into a pair of boots...
Just for the record, Hakeem is a Muslim name, so why would you consider that you're white when naming your son?
I am old enough to remember LUV YA BLUE..and Nolan RYan coming. Althoug I personally would put Hakeem first in the city of Houston, I would say the edge would go to Earl. This is a Football town. Hakeem pull into a tie when he won the championships but for some reason there are a lot of Hakeem haters in the city. Like I said its a football town.
first of all, i am not prejudiced. i am a texan but also a citizen of the world. i live in brooklyn with all types of ethnicities living together. plus, hakeem is a cool sounding name and a hero of us all.
Exactly, he signed with Spalding because he didn't believe in kids spending $100 on a pair of sneakers? I'm glad you pointed that out.
I thought Hakeem signed with Spalding because the major shoe companies didn't want him. ...I remember Hakeem in a Fila ad in my 1994 SI championship issue. He was standing in mid air with his feet in a pair of rings...
Yeah remember when Ryan won his playoff games for the 'Stos and Cy Youngs awards? Nope? That's b/c he didn't Ryan has NEVER won a Cy Young or playoff game for Houston. He just had long career with 7 no-hitters in a regular season games. He never won big games in Houston or w/ the Rangers. He is like Bagwell & Bidge, not money players. Dream is Houston's (via Nigeria) best athelete. He has the stats and the rings. Or if you want to get down to it Roger Clemens is Houston's own best athelete.
They were LA Gear NOT FILA. He did comericals w/ Karl Malone and Joe Montana. He had no lines. Dream was even fined by the league for wearing shoes that lit up in game. Those were LA Gear. His 1st shoes he endorsed were Etonics. Those were nice.
Oh yeah...Couldn't remember the brand name...LA Gear shoes sucked ass... I can honestly not remember seeing any Hakeem shoes in a store anywhere. Shaq has shoes at K-Mart
That is why Dream forced a trade to Toronto??? Rockets did offer him a contract. Remember when there some controversy awhile back that he was faking an injury so he would not play. GM Steve Patterson called him out saying that was a tactic to renegotiate his contract? Team Dr. cleared Dream to play. Word of advice- When they say it's not about the money it is ALWAYS about the money. I.E. MLB.
