Problem is every year we wait is another year closer to paying for Springer, Keichel, Correa, Giles, Altuve big time money. You spend some now given that luxury. You sure damn well aren't gonna be able to get a B. Harper type while also paying Keichel / Springer 100 + mil.
I'm kind of in the mood to bet on a Cliff Lee comeback. 1 year/ $12 mil? He's looking for a good fit. What better fit for his great postseason record and experience AND he wants that elusive ring he never got. With the cash we've saved Astros could sign Lee and Kazmir.
Keuchel is in there and I don't think we go after those guys. We just need to lock up him and Correa to go along with Altuve. We have our core. What we do need is a #2 and in a few years this Cueto contract could be on the cheap compared to the other guys. If this is the case, then we should front load a contract with Cueto and give him a player option for 2018/2019. This could be appealing to him if he thinks a bigger contract is viable. We have the cap space to do this and Luhnow should do it. I would give Cueto 4 year/110 million with that option for the last year. What seems like alot, really isn't. Because when he comes off the books we can resign our big guns. Keuchel Cueto McCullers Fiers McHugh This is very good. In fact, with the control we have on these guys... We could deal more of our surplus for areas of need and/or another top of the line rotation pitcher near the deadline to push us over the top.
Didn't catch Ken Giles' introductory press conference, but I hear that Evan Drellich asked a question about how much was left available to spend in free agency (or something along those lines), and Jeff Luhnow took some exception to it.
i watched. he didn't seem all that peeved by that, but was ticked at whoever mentioned the trade getting delayed because of Fisher's failed physical, and presented that assumption as fact. i still never found out who it was that asked him that.
Welp.

The Giants and Johnny Cueto reach a six-year, $130 million deal with an opt-out after two years. Hmm, guess the Giants took note of the spending that Arizona and the Dodgers have been doing, and decided to buy their way back to the World Series. Their lineup will be Bumgarner, Cueto, Samardzija, Cain and Peavy. Not bad. But looks like they added $40M+ to their payroll next year just between Samardzija and Cueto. Crazy times.
why welp? the team that just knocked us out and won the world series losing players to the NL doesn't seem like the worst thing in the world.
Just meant 'welp' as a casual "guess this isn't happening" comment. I wasn't particularly for or against signing Cueto.
glad you didn't mean whelping. I'm with you though on the casual use of the term. I think I used 'welp' in a term paper once and was admonished for lazy thinking.
True, but I can't see Kazmir settling for "less" than what is available elsewhere, to play for someone that says "we don't think at 31 years old you can handle more than 20 starts" It's a great time to be an Astro and it's his hometown team But likely his last big contract too
I don't think there is a great market for him. Nobody is gonna pay a guy 20 million dollars when there is strong evidence that he is gonna start pitching poorly when the pennant chase rolls around.
Yea if everyone believes what clutch fans says, then you are definitely right I seriously doubt that a guy with more better second halves in his career than poor ones, is thought of that way throughout the industry Many in here have a tendency to drastically over dramatize things He was never the top guy on the market, but pretty much is now. It will be interesting to see what type of deal he gets, if it is only for three years I really hope that it is with us
It's not just us, it's 2 straight years of identical, and dramatic splits. He had past good results, but it's been years. He's been out of baseball since then. You could be right. Maybe some team takes a chance and he's awesome all year, I just wouldn't want my team to take that chance.
Except it was just 2013 since he was better 2H than 1H, not back before he was out of baseball And before his last 3 starts of the year, his 2H era was in the 2's this year So if at age 31, that represents a guy who without a doubt will fold like a cheap lawn chair after 20 starts Then a lot of players need to be revalued
His ERA has been better than Hisahi Iwakuma the last 2 years, and Iwakuma got 3 years, $45M from the Mariners. Kazmir is also 3 years younger, and pitched more innings the last two years than Iwakuma. I still believe some team will give Kazmir 4 years, $16M/year. I'd be ok with that, as in years 3 and 4, Kazmir will probably be at a Feldman-type level, and that will probably be fair market value in 3 or 4 years for a Feldman type. I'd also be ok if Luhnow could get a veteran like Fister or Buehrle to sign a 1 year deal for $15M or so. Would allow us to rest McCullers during the season, and Feldman will almost certainly miss a month or two due to his annual injury.
