Luther's huh? I'll stop there along with Backyard Burger, then pick up my prescription at Phar-Mor, and buy a new anti-skip Discman at Venture.
then you know not of what you speak, my friend. the BBQ scene here has grown exponentially the past few years. roegel's is serving some of the best brisket i've ever had in my life.
and pappa's is good for what it is. also, i know it doesn't mean anything as far as the actual bbq goes, but i still think they have the best fries in the city.
For a chain I think they do well. I've certainly had MUCH worse BBQ before. I say that as someone who isn't huge on BBQ joints in general because in all my travels I only rarely run across better BBQ than I can make myself. I'm a lot bigger on restaurants that make things that I'm not good at making myself or that I simply can't make myself. I feel like every natural born Texan should have at least a working knowledge of how to make good BBQ.
Pappa's BBQ has good burgers.. That is about it.. I don't even know if it is on their menu but when I was in rice village area I used to go to the one on Kirby and get a cheeseburger basket with fries for like $6. It was really cheap and pretty damn good
Woah... Luthers might have value as a nostalgia experience from my childhood, but I'm pretty much certain that its pretty low quality in comparison to what you get at a true high quality BBQ joint. Houston - -Killens -Pizzitolas -Gatlins Austin & surrounding (best of the best here) -Blacks BBQ (lockhart) -Franklins -Salt Lick Dallas- -Hard8 -MeatUAnywhere (coming to Houston shortly) -Pecan Lodge If you put Killens side by side with Luthers, Rudy's, or any other chain you can just see the difference. Its night and day. But I do have some great memories growing up, and thinking how cool i was getting my root beer out of the ice tub.... memories....
We used to go to the one on Telephone Road back in the day. Does it still exist? The Tel-Wink Grill still does, but perhaps it's changed. That place presented one face during the day and early evening, and an entirely different one late at night, when prostitutes would stroll in trolling for business.
That and Panchos are my favorites. I love raising the flag at Panchos for more of those awesome Sopapillas and honey.
My grandmother used to take me there for chili cheeseburgers when I was little. Miss it. Not a Pappas bbq fan.
