Strong met with Sonny Cumbie last night and offered him the OC position. Not sure when a decision can be expected but heard Strong will fly out to interview Sterling Gilbert tonight if Cumbie is still mulling things over by then.
I don't think he has ever called plays before. Probably the best they can do considering there is so little job security at Texas next year.
Looks like Cumbie is in Austin today. http://www.burntorangenation.com/2015/12/7/9864156/sonny-cumbie-texas-longhorns-austin-meeting Could the Air Raid offense come to Texas???
He hasn't but Cumbie is a pretty big get if Strong can seal the deal. He is the next guy up if Meachum left TCU and is likely OU's first choice if Riley leaves for ECU.

Yep. Texas was gonna have to shell out some dough for their guy. Roster still needs a ton of work and this could very well be a one year job but need to secure for 3.
Cumbie is meeting with Gary Patterson this morning. Expect a decision to be announced this afternoon.
I liked Strong as a coach but never liked him for UT. It was obvious they settled for him. With that said, you start making him concede things, like the offensive philosophy, and you're neutering some of the things that made him successful at Louisville. You're putting obstacles in front of the guy instead of letting him coach. What UT needs IMO, more so than a spread scheme, is a good QB. If you're going to make Charlie change everything you might as well just fire the guy and start over instead of trying to "fix" him. It might work, but you're UT. Swing that UT dick and get Kelly.
What obstacles are you talking about other than the ones that were already in place when he came on? Strong realized his offensive philosophy wasn't going to work in the Big 12 and is just now making the proper adjustments. It's just a shame that he is just now doing this. What made him successful at UL was bringing in his own players and letting him develop them, and that is exactly why he is getting a 3rd year despite 2 horrible seasons. We have also given him a blank check to do whatever he needs to right the ship. I agree that we need a QB but that is on Strong more than anyone else. He knew what we had at QB after last season and decided not to bring in a JUCO. We're not changing Strong anymore than Strong is changing himself.
Only reason I can tell we are compelled to have this spread offense is recruiting. Cuz strategically, it doesn't matter what kind of offense you run - just have to score more points than your opponent. Good ball control offense might score fewer points, but it helps your defense and your opponent should score less. Your Big 12 peers' offenses should dictate your defensive strategy more than your offense's.
Problem is, spread offense is dominating Texas high school football right now. They need someone competent in recruiting these kids and coaching them in a system they can grow in. I think they can do this and build a defense to stop the other teams, too.
Word on the radio is that he's staying at TCU. Strong is turning his attention to the Temple OC. I believe his name is Sterling Gilbert.
I don't think it'll matter anyway. They're going to clean house after a 7 or 8 win season next year, hopefully for a decent coach.
Very possible and might have been the breaking point for Cumbie. Apparently he wanted 3 years guaranteed while Perrin was only offering 2. Can't blame either side as Cumbie has a young family and the possibility of moving for just a year or even 2 may not be that appealing. For UT, 3 years guaranteed at $1M+ is a lot to commit to for a guy who has never called plays. With that said, seems like a lot of this should have been worked out before the full court press was made by UT.
Heck yeah. I was kind of worried, but ultimately the chances of it being for such a short period was too much.
Now hearing that Meachum is closing in on the Tulane opening which further explains the decision. Moving on to Gilbert, think he brings a system much better suited for this team and what Charlie wants to do (run the ball). Cumbie would have been nice for recruiting but a lot to like about Gilbert.
