I'll be taking a little business trip to Greenville, SC, at the end of September. Is anyone familiar with the town? I'll be there about a week and my wife will probably join me. Is there any particular place I'd like to look to find a hotel at? I like old-timey historic stuff, but can't spend my company's money too freely. Also, what sorts of things should I and/or my wife see in the area? Things that are unique to or representative of the character of Greenville? Finally, I'm not one for night-life but I'll want to do something in the evening. Is there any place for a boring stick in the mud such as me to entertain himself in the evening?
My dad used to live there and I would visit him during the summers when I was younger... that being said I was a little tike and don't know any great hangouts in the city. What I can offer is to tell you to pickup a basket of peaches somewhere on the Interstate... not sure if its peach season, but thats pretty much all I can remember about Greenville! Peaches and the red dirt! I think he lived near Haywood Mall????? That is a longshot guess.... Hope you enjoy your trip!
I work in Greenville, but I live about an hour away. I work across the street from the haywood mall. To be honest, there is not much up here to do. If you like bar/clubbing, i can ask around, but other than that, I don't think there is much history around the area. That would be more of the charleston/myrtlebeach area. I'll ask around this weekend. (God I miss Houston)
Nice, I got the name right! My dad lived in the townhouses on Ingleoak Ln, about 1 block away from the mall.. near you? Its a small world!
Maybe I'll ask the company to move their offices to Charleston. Is Greenville at all walkable, at least downtown? Do they have a subway or anything or do I need a car to get anywhere at all? Is there any place in Greenville that doesn't look like a desolate suburban wasteland? Don't bother with bars and clubs. I'm not interested in that stuff. A decent restaurant recommendation would be appreciated though. Appreciate the help. I figured asking about a small town was a long-shot but the BBS is never without someone with experience on any given subject.
It seems I'm not an easy person to entertain. I despise golf. Which is unfortunate because the office is across the street from a golf course. I'm sure there must be some pick-up basketball nearby too, wouldn't you think? Well, I hear they finally have television in the Carolinas now.
Might be a little late, but I live in Greenville. It's not that bad although it's definitely not a metropolis. But downtown although small is walkable. Subway??? Ha ha ha... I wish. If you're looking for some food, it depends on what you want to eat, Soby's here is very popular although I think it is a little overblown. I prefer Ristorante Bergamo to it. There are lots of restaurants in the area and most of them are fairly good. That is one thing that we have a lot of in this area. Unique things. Not so sure about that. There is the Gaffney Peach, a Peach about thirty minutes out that looks more like a butt than a peach. The evening is a hard time to find things to do in Greenville. There is the Roper Mountain Science center, the Peace Center, the Bi-lo center here might have something happening that weekend. Furman University is located here and is definitely a defining characteristic for the area. I would go there for a walk, beautiful campus, belltower, etc. Walking downtown is fun for one night but gets boring quick. If you have any more questions i can try and answer them. Just tell me what you think you might want to do. Wow broke my silence for this... I would have thought it would have at least been over Cuttino Mobley or Yao Ming or something liek that...
Hhahahahah!! I forgot about the giant ass! Depends which side your heading on the freeway...could be: 1) "Wow look its a peach!" or 2) " Holy %$*& thats a giant ass crack!" That brought back some funny memories! Furman is great, we used to catch the orchestra there sometimes, really nice. Chase the lightening bugs which we don't have in Houston. Hope your trip goes well!
Little O, thanks for coming out of lurk mode for me. It's not too late at all. I've got a plane ticket and that's about it. I'm going to be there 6 nights (Sat to Friday)... got an extra bedroom? just kidding. I'm looking for a hotel right now. I'll look into some of the things you named. I'm especially intrigued by this big butt -- er, peach.
One more thing: do you know what hotels are around downtown. I know of Westin Poinsett (too expensive) and Hyatt Regency (possibility). What others are there? Is there any other district of town one would care to visit (favoring the east side to the west)?
Going away for the weekend. So this will be quick, I will try to find this thread when I get back. The regency is pretty much the best choice of all of the hotels downtown, almost the only choice You will definitely need a car. Downtown it pretty much all the same. The WestEnd is fairly nice and so is the area around the Hyatt. Well, got to go. I promise to tell you more when I return on Tuesday. Too bad the rockets are not playing during that time. Would be nice to see a fellow rocket fan for once and watch the game.
The downtown is nothing spectacular. If you like to mingle, its a good place to go. Its pretty laid back. As little said, its a one night thing. Bilo Center might have something going on. If you're a football fan, you could catch Clemson...but you're probably coming in later that evening. Miyabis is a nice restarant to hit ... similar to Sobo's, although I never been there. Furman Univ. is a maze. I went there for the 1st time this weekend. Spent 15 min. trying to get out. Still checking around. Little, if you're intrested, maybe sometime we could catch a game.
Thats Greensboro NC. The Hyatt Regency is nice, I've stayed there a couple of times. I almost ended up going to Furman but decided to go some where a little cooler (PA). The campus really is nice, worth a look.
