so you think God "sets us up" for either success or failure (the fate part) and we choose (free will) which action to take?

Wouldnt this same viewpoint hold true if we removed God from the statement and entered the concept of life in general ?

that of course each person is presented with challenges in life and how they respond to those challenges determines our lot in life? of course it isnt that simple, other people, governments, society in general have a big influence on how big or little the challenges we face are..

I am an odd condundrum of contradictions. My liberal friends think I'm liberal. My conservative friends would say I'm conservative. Not sure if you had a reason for asking or just curiousity, but I'm sure we'll meet at some point now that RM95 is moving to Houston, so we can discuss religion further then if you want!

I must say I truely respect that you can say "I don't know"

that is somewhat rare in my experience when discussing this sort of topic with people of faith..

Sure, but based on my experiences in life, I find it hard to believe that many of the things that have happened are purely coincidence ... and if it's not coincidence, then by definition there has to be something supernatural guiding it.

I also know that, had my experiences been different, I very well may not believe in God today. That's why I think faith is a very personal thing, and why I've never really fit into a particular religion.

I think you have hit the heart of the purpose of religion...our (mankind's) need to believe that there is some purpose behind why shi**y things happen...that it just can't be *bad luck* or whatever

Sounds great! BTW, MadMax, now that I have your phone numbers, be expecting a call around 6:00 tomorrow evening. I've packed boxes light enough that even the little one can help. :D

Dang I lost the webpage; maybe someone can help me relocate it......It was a math/physics web page about a theory , the name started with an 'a' , that said something to the effect that....

If a self-concious man finds himself existing at all, it assumes that he is existing within a benevolent universe (i.e. one that does not require an intelligent designer). Or in another way; in an infinite universe, there exist an infinite number of possibilities, at least one of which is existence of life as we know it.

who or what put together the infinite universe that offered the infinite choices? everything has a cause in physics.

IMO, it was God, of course.

The Chicken.. because it came from a mutated egg of a Chickitan or whatever its evolutionary predecessor may have been. :)

Sorry, I have not kept up with the thread, but I did want to throw in a comment on this. Not everything has a cause in physics. In fact, on the quantum level, uncaused events are quite common.

    Oh, and I also wanted to apoligize for implying that all ID people are Christians. It is just my experience with creationists/etc. are with Christians. Additionally, not all christians believe in creationism/id/etc. Sorry. -_-;;

i've heard it said that quantum physics is a pretty good pointer to the divine, Mori...i don't understand quantum physics enough (mostly because i've never tried to understand) to know what that means...can you venture a guess?

if i remember right, it was an astronaut who said this.

I can definately see the connection. In fact, there are numerous books drawing such connections between quantum theory and eastern religion/sprituality. I think trying to understand quantum theory through any sort of everyday experience will not produce any insight. Most scientists at the beginning of the century tried to understand the quantum ideas being proposed at the time in terms of the classical (newtonian) mechanics. But the world of the really small proved much more weird than anything in the macroscopic world. :) Ultimately, I think the math itself is the only reliable picture of what 'really' happens. And although there is alot of randomness on the quantum level, most everything evens out statistically on the macroscopic level and thus behaves in the deterministic manner of newtonian mechanics.

Anyways, quantum mechanics is weird. :p
