Here in Humble, we have had Banana trees growing in the same place for 3 years, and this is the first year I have 4 to 5 inch green bananas... Perhaps some of yall have Banana trees and can offer advice... I'm really excited by the bunch growing (about 20 thus far), but the problem is they are 4 or maybe 5 inches long and very green...I'm trying to water as much as possible. I talk to the Bananas and everything I can think of...Summer won't last forever, so I'm a bit concerned. I have a small grapefruit tree with only 1 Grapefruit left (the others have fallen - the size of a baseball), and I don't expect it to make it (being productive) till another year or so...Am I given up too soon? Any special way to cut the Banana trees this winter...I remember cutting it, but I'm not 100% sure... Meat, fruit, vegetables, my backyard has it all...and I'm still adding stuff!...
Two words: Greenhouse No wait that's one word. We had a banana tree growing here a few years back, but it quickly died. Way way way too hot. But for the past 3 years, we've grown tomatoes (almost all grape or cherry variety). They're turning out better by the year. They even reseeded themselves this past season. I'm trying honeydews, but it's a bit more difficult. Too many strange bugs are attracted.
Funny, now that I think about it, I've never seen LONG wild bananas. Only short ones. Having lived on the pacific rim most of my life, I've seen quiet a few trees... I was in Sun Harvest today looking for fresh produce to juice and blend tonight and I've got to tell you, I'd love to get into your backyard RR
My Mom has banana "trees" in west-facing corners of her patio... very protected , but get lots of sunlight (if that makes any sense ). This year they grew big enough to eat. No kidding! It's been ages since they even came close to that. They aren't big, but you can eat 'em. We're all amazed. ROXRAN, I thought this was some kind of YoYao tribute thread when I clicked on it. He's gone now... wherever YoYao's go. Sad, but true... according to codell. Adios, YoYao.
Bananas and grapefruits haha.... kind of a misleading thread title... why the hell would you ever wanna cut your banana?
We have a banana tree, but it never produces bananas. Except one time. It produce quite a bit. it was those small little baby banana kinds, and yeah, they were green. I think bananas are suppose to ripen after they are picked.
ROXRAN, I got your email message. I figured that is what happened or something similar. It is okay as I enjoyed talking to you and I am here to help you through this situation as a friend.
How hot was it? Banana trees are zone 10 plants. You're not supposed to even expect them to fruit in Houston.
How hot was it? Banana trees are zone 10 plants. You're not supposed to even expect them to fruit in Houston We had pretty normal looking bananas in our yard in Houston last year. We did nothing to portect them during the winter. Just greenery for the yard. Surprisingly they even tasted sort of sweet. (Not good enought to replace "Chiquita". This is a relatively new phenomenon I think in HOuston.
I think we have it for looks. Its about 14 feet tall, and is about five feet wide around. We have it in the corner of the backyard. we also have a peach tree, and it has only produced peaches once.
Not exactly what I thought this thread was going to be about. So I may never find out who has the long bananas around here. That's OK. You'll never hear about my peaches either...
