Ok, It has been a while since my last upate on Atkins. I went to England for 9 days and did NOT stay on the diet...too much good beer to be had in the UK. So, during those 9 days I gained back 6 pounds. However, as soon as I went back on the program, I lost 4 of it right away, so I figure that is just water weight. I am currently at 187, which is down 18 pounds and am just now getting back into a good ketosis. I can not tell you guys how easy it has been. I still eat all the things I love sans bread, sugars and tortillas. I am on my way to about 170 -175, and am already down 5 inches on my belly..... I just noticed I have ribs...who knew? DD
So what happens if you follow the diet as recommended, but still drink a lot of beer on the weekend? I can live without bread, sugar, and tortillas, but I'll be damned if I gotta quit drinkin'.
Ditto. I've switched to Miller Lite because I think it has less carbs than even Michelob's "low carb" beer. Less than 3 carbs per can if I remember right and more alcohol. Or Crown and diet coke. I hate the taste of diet drinks, but it's not so bad mixed with Crown. I've found that if you get off the plan during the weekend, drink lot's of water on Monday and Tuesday. Of course you should drink lot's of water everyday, but drink even more after a "lapse". You'll just piss away those extra carbs! That's a medical term, BTW.
I still drink plenty of beer (mostly Miller Lite, unless something else is on sale) and I've done pretty well. I started at 224 (I'm only 5'9") and on Tuesday I weighed 208. We have not been on a strict Atkins diet (probably eat too many vegetables and we've been on an ice cream kick as well) but more of a reduced/low carb diet. I think one of the main things is I've been busting my azz at the gym around 3 times a week. We've been on the diet for about a month and a half.
Bogey, The thing is that I have not been following it to the letter either, but have just cut my carbs WAY WAY down and keep myself in Ketosis while I lose the weight. I will adjust once I get to my desired weight. DD
I tried doing it the full on Atkins but I just don't like vegetables enough and like fruit and potatoes too much. I cut out the bread, pasta, and soft drinks though. I do have a lot more energy since I started which has caused me to up my exercise a lot so I guess it's working in a way. I feel a lot better and can really feel the difference in energy/mood when I stray from the diet. It's been a good experience so far.
I haven't weighed myself since I started about a month ago, but I can see the results. Atkins is working great for me, and I'm glad it's working for you, too.
Timing, How has your body responded? Have you started dropping weight? Are you in Ketosis? Also, I drink wine occassionally and Miller light only 3 carbs. No matter what, I feel so much better about how to handle dieting than I did before. Information gained by studying the Atkins plan has been invaluable. DD
Hey fellow Atkineers! Glad to hear that you are all doing well. My update after a month and a half: weight is down about 15 pounds (189-174) and body fat is down 4% (19%-15%). I started exercising last week more seriously and it's helping. As a matter of fact, I just came back from a 3 mile run and exercise jaunt around Memorial Park. I've never been on a diet that's easier or makes more sense. I haven't incorporated alcohol back in yet as I'm trying to get down as much as possible for my cruise in September, but I plan on allowing alcohol back in when I get around 165 pounds. Good luck everyone!
Gutter, That is great news....keep up the good work. What gets me the most, or rather, what I enjoy the most, is knowing a lot more about how the body handles Carbs, and Fat, and protein etc. I feel that I can make a much more informed decision now. Oh, and a glass of wine or a low carb beer now and again won't hurt you. DD
I've dropped about 10 pounds in I guess it's been 4/5 weeks or so. I was in Ketosis for a few days but I couldn't stay with not eating fruit and stay below that 20 grams. The increased energy level has really been the biggest thing for me because I just feel better about exercising. I agree with you about the information in the book. After reading the book I just have a better grasp of what things I should stay away from and how it affects my body. Like I said it's been a great experience.
i've been on it for 4 days now. sometimes i feel hungry but don't really have to eat which is good. i think i've had less than 1000 calories all 4 days which is ridiculous for me and yet don't feel like eating more. it's amazing what getting 0 calories from drinks (diet tea and dr peppers and water) can do to caloric intake. i've hit 20 carbs all 4 days but might go to a friends before the UT game this sunday. if they got pizza, i'm eating it and thus starting the lower carb portion of my modified atkins instead of the insanely low 20 carb thing (will try about 60 carbs per day for another week or so). can you get in ketosis on 60 carbs a day? either way, i'll be low carbing it for a long time. looking to top out around 120-140 carbs a day eventually in the future.
francis, you are probably going up the carb ladder waay too quickly there. According to the book, young, athletic, muscular guys may be able to eat as many as 80-100 carbs and not gain weight. How much weight do you want to lose? I do remember the book saying something about if you don't have too much to lose, you could go straight into ongoing weight loss at a level around 60 carbs (if you are active). I really recommend picking up the book - it has a lot of information and tricks to do this way of eating most efficiently. Oh, and in answer to your question, it really has to do with your muscle mass and activity level, but it's certainly possible to be in ketosis at 60g of carbs. Happy low-carbing!
3 of my co-workers are on the Atkins Diet and they weigh themselves each am and chart their progress. They each tip the scale at around 210 and approx 6 ft tall. My question is, I am only 5`8 and approx 175 although I do have a few inches in the middle I would like to get rid of, approx 10 lbs. I am contiplating doing this diet although my friends do not think I will see the results I want since I dont have alot of excess weight. Advice?
I think it's a good way to get your eating habits under control ROCKSS. I'm 5'10 and 175 now, but I feel that I am eating healthier foods and can basically choose how I want my body to look. That's a pretty cool feeling considering that I've tried to eat healthy (low-fat, high carb) and lose a little weight for years. You probably won't see as dramatic losses at first, but you should find that you can get the weight loss you want as long as you exercise as well. I think Atkins has benefits for almost everyone, just because you are replacing empty, overprocessed foods with healthy alternatives. Why don't you pick the book up and read it to see what you think?
To anyone on Atkins: I have high chlorestoral and triglycerides, but my blood pressure is fine. How does this diet affect these levels?
Atkins seems to have its most pronounced effect on triglycerides. They are likely to come way, way down. It's not as clear on the cholesterol, (results are highly individualistic) but in general your good cholesterol will go up and bad down a little bit.
