Who do yall think is the MVP of the team this year? No one really stands out compared to everyone else. I think Ill go with Hildalgo for being pretty consistent.
It's still too early i think, but right now it's Jeff Kent. With out him the Astros would be way behind in the division. He was the best bat in the 1st half. Without him we wouldn't be contending for the division title.
Hidalgo, by far... Kent is good, but Hidalgo has come up big time this year, after getting shot... Go Stros'...
Again, to reiterate...Dalgy is so clutch and he is on fire this year...I was watching WGN as I'm out of town, and Dierker was on and couldn't say enought good things about him as a person first, then as a player who has a true love for the game...
Why aren't Dotel or Lidge in there? With as much as they have pitched, I think they deserve consideration. One person I think deserves a lot of credit even though he can't hit is Ausmus. Without him, I think our pitching would be much worse. I think he deserves a lot of credit for a rotation including Robertson, Villone, Redding, and Fernandez pitching so well. Overall, I think it is very hard to name a MVP. Different players have stepped up at different times. Hidalgo probably has been the most consistent offensively, but the strength of our team has been the bullpen. So I would name someone from there, and Wagner has been the best, so I'll go with him.
gain, to reiterate...Dalgy is so clutch and he is on fire this year... Depends on your definition of clutch. With no one on: .312, .634, 1.002 (Avg, Slg, OPS) With runners on: .292, .459, .839 With runners in scoring position: .226, .330, .681
The bullpen as a whole is our team MVP. Team offensive player of the year: I give that to Jeff Kent barely. He is the heart and soul of this club(look at his leadership tuesday and in that walkoff bomb on Matt Morris earlier this year) and that gives him the nod over a resurgent Richard Hidalgo, who needs to remain a Stro for life if he keeps hitting like this year. Unbelievable defender. Team gold glove: Brad Ausmus. In a close nod over Adam Everett, officer brad's ability to shut down the opponent's running game is outstanding, even with a knuckleballer on the mound and tony womack running. Offensive ROY: Morgan Ensberg. He is going to be a Stro for a long time, and I too want him at 3b over Geoff "I need to be the new billy spiers" Blum. Pitching ROY: Brad Lidge. Jeriome Robertson a close second, but Lidge has preserved more games than Robertson has started. Fireballer(pitcher) of the year: Billy Wagner. He has been amazing this year posting an unreal ERA and whip. Dotel was 2nd but his inconsistency cost him the Award.
Not to nitpick (O.K., well maybe to nitpick), Ensberg is not a rookie. He had a few too many at bats last year.
Bobrek, I know by MLB standards he isn't a rookie, but considering his lack of real game experience and that this is only a team award I figured it was ok to nominate him as he blows the competition away.
I picked Kent. Does anyone have stats on the Astros record when Kent is playing vs. when he isnt? Kent is a very professional hitter, seems to get timely hits or move the runners when he needs to. Doesn't frustrate me like Baggs and Bidge do sometimes. Hidalgo is a close 2nd.
Hidalgo. We really needed him to come back and play like the player of old, and while he's not doin as good as his 44/122 season, he's still havin a good year. We wouldn't be where we are without his play this year.
7th inning or later with the Astros either ahead by one run, tied or with the potential tying run at least on deck : .292 .431 .777 OPS is low, but he's driving in a run every 6.54 atbats in the 7th inning or later with the Astros either ahead by one run, tied or with the potential tying run at least on deck. An RBI in this situation is 14 percent more likely than an atbat that doesn't meet this criteria. 83% of time with man on third <2 outs (24 atbats), Hidalgo gets man home. The Astros have a propensity to be leading by two or more runs when Hidalgo comes to the plate with runners on and with runners in scoring position.
