This trade would help (IMO) both teams. Houston trades: --G. Rice --E. Griffin --B. Nachbar Memphis trades: --S. Battier --S Swift --B. Knight Houston needs a starting small forward and Battier could be that for years. He gives us not only solid play on offense, but also solid defense. Memphis needs a back up small forward in case M. Miller goes down. A change may help both power forwards involved. Houston needs a back up vetern point guard for spot minutes and to help season Francis. Knight, if health, is that and more, both on offense and defense. His contract expires this year, a plus. Memphis gets a chance to grow Nachbar for their future back up. This trade may help both teams. Your opinions?
I think this trade idea has already been posted and discussed in length. I like it. Even though I'm not a big Swift fan and don't want to give up on EG, I'd love what Battier could bring to the team.
Why are so many people enamored with Swift. He's a bigger bust than Eddie. Just look at his numbers, and he's older.
WOW... i never thought coming to these boards i would see so many trade ideas in one summer.. Its amazing how everyone wants swift... I prefer gambling EDDIE G... TRADE REJECTED
I too don't see the facination of Swift over Griffin. It seems like change for the sake of change to me. If you are going to move Griffin, move him to get something that you are not currently getting now from Griffin.
Vancouver gives up 3 decent players for 2 underachivers and a golden oldie Come on Guys it's Jerry West he isn't stupid
I like the trade but not because of Swift over Griffin. Griffin is just as productive as Swift (neither have proven they are starting 4 material) but I would say EG is younger with a little more upside to most observers. EG also has a lower contract with more years left--a plus to him. But I do like the trade because of Battier. I think he would be an adequate 3 and I really am skeptical Boki will ever be one. I'll tell you a trade I like even better: Cato & Boki for Wright and Battier. Wright isn't the defender Cato and is a tad cheaper but the difference over the back-up C minutes they would play behind Yao wouldn't be that much, and as you know I really like a Battier-Boki swap. From Memphis' perspective with Posey and Miller as long term starters plus some untradable back-ups Battier is expendable (kind of like KT for us) and they get a defensive presence in the C spot they really need.
DS - Why would Memphis do this? Battier at the very worst is a quality backup SF who can play some 2guard while Boki has proven nothing and would get zero PT behind Posey and Mike Miller. Other than a few blocked shots (when he's motivated and not in foul trouble), Cato is not better than Wright. IMHO, if Wright and Battier were on the table, the asking price would be higher then a backup C with 1 good season under his belt and a 15th pick with 77 career minutes. If the Grizz would take the risk on his health, Theo Ratliffe for Wright and Battier makes more sense for both teams.
You could be right that Memphis would balk--but then again they are shopping for a C and names like Dampier and Foyle are being mentioned. Cato (much superior defender) is a lot more of what Memphis needs than Wright at a fairly similar costs/contracts. What if we throw in next years #1 to boot? Cato, Boki + #1 (probably like 16-18 overall, but I am sure Memphis believes they have a shot at the playoffs to make our pick #13) for Battier and Wright--is that looking equitable? Also, I don't think Memphis would consider Ratliff. He, like Wright, is awefully small for a WC center and is older with an injury history.
DS - The problem Memphis will encounter in trying to upgrade their starting center position is that Lo Wright will almost have to be part of the trade. Otherwise, Wrights $7+m is a factor in what the Grizz shell out for the total C position $. You are probably right about Ratliffe from the Grizz perspective. I just think that if a deal is done, the Grizz will get it done in the EC. Why would anyone in the WC want to improve a rival? The main reason I ignore most of the dreamcasting that includes Memphis is that if West and Hubie would go for it, maybe they know something CD and/or JVG don't. For example, if they offered Mike Miller would his back turn into a problem?
I agree with you, that is why I hate Cato & Wright as the main salary players involved. The problem is most of the extra servicable or somewhat servicable meatty starter centers (Cato, Damp, Foyle, Voskahl, Tskaliades, James, Potapinko, Booth, Bradley) are in the West. Personally, I think considering injury history, size, agility, defensive focus, salary--Cato is about the best what Memphis is looking for that they could find using Wright as a principal. You worry about improving yourself first, if it also improves a rival so be it. Even SA and Sac entered a deal this offseason--I guess trying to keep up with the common enemy, the PFJ (no really, it is the Lakers), is the stronger motivation than worrying what it does to just 1 competitor. That is always a risk, but sometimes people trade players that just better fit one another's needs (Rice-EJones) and all sides win.
LOL! Pigs, though I hate your phrases and sentences and odd capitalizations at times... YOU ARE THE MAN!
no... jerry west isn't stupid. not trying to support this trade or anything, but "jerry isn't stupid" to the fact that his bestest buddy, kobe bryant, announced that he'll "keep his eyes open" when he's a free agent next offseason (not sure if it's restricted or not). with wesley person coming off the books after this upcoming season and brevin knight coming off also, a little more space (glen rice in the trade mentioned above) wouldn't hurt in pursuing bryant as far as caproom goes. i'm not trying to pretend that i understand all of this crap about salary caps and stuff or if any of that made sense money wise, but it seems that glen would be one reason why memphis whould bite on this. i dunno. hp, you're a genius with the whole "cap" thingee... would any of that stuff make sense?
