I want to like Jimmy. He has a lot of amusing bits that I enjoy. Before I know it though he's back flopping around on his desk convulsing in laughter and I'm ready to turn the station.
I always found it odd that a dude born six years before me seems obsessed with TV shows that I thought I was too old for when they were on the air.
I'm kind of like arkoe. Most of the time when I see the highlight reels of Fallon online, I dig them. The stuff he does with Justin Timberlake especially. But when I sit down to actually watch his show I end up getting bored. So I'll just stick with appreciating the stuff that makes the rounds online, I guess.
His interviews are especially terrible, he always repeats the funny things the star said and then breaks out in this horribly fake laughter.
He is just a really weird dude. He grew up in an extremely religious family that was beyond over protective. He was not allowed to listen to music or watch television. His parents would record television shows and edit out all of the "offensive" content and then let him and his siblings watch..... they were still doing this when he was 16-18 years old. He wasn't allowed to have friends over or play with other children. He married a woman older than him that is very "motherly" and had an absolute obsession with alcohol. Guy was disliked by a lot of the SNL cast. He seems socially stunted honestly, not surprised he would like shows not appropriate for his age as he didn't get exposed to them until he was an older age.
I watched last night just to see what Nick Offerman would have to say about Fargo (very little) and what they would do with his persona. Fast forwarded through pretty much everything else, but did stop to watch the bit where he had The Roots freestyle off of a couple of bits of info picked up from audience members. How freaking lucky is he to have The Roots in house every night?
Conan's ratings are higher in the younger demo and if you look at his studio audience it's seemingly entirely made up of 21-year olds, and he doesn't do that stuff. Then again, everyone under the age of 30 looks like a 21-year old to me. I bartended a Fallon show all the way back in 2002, which makes me 22 then, and thought he was funny but man, this was kid stuff. Adam Sandler impressions and the like. This was in an ancient, classy theater in Chicago and he was doing the exact same act as he did for us in college on a four dollar ticket night at Mizzou. I understand it's hard to come up with new material while at SNL, and this was before comics changed their acts every year, but come on. Someone in his camp was doing blow up in the dressing room next to where we counted out. Not saying it was him because I have absolutely no proof. Everyone in my camp including me was doing blow back then, that's how we found out because we want to know who in the building was dealing, so I'm not judging.
This this this! Fallon seems like a nice dude but he isn't in Kimmel's league in terms of wit and just banter with his guests. The only reasons to tune in are the skits, the games and The Roots crew.
Colbert is beating everyone else silly, in my opinion. Of course, I'm a huge fan, so that might influence my opinion a little. ;-)-
Colbert's by far the best interviewer. It took him about a week to get past the Colbert Report persona as far as his interviews, the first week I found really hard to watch. His bits and monologues though still feel stuck back in the Colbert Report vein of trying to go too far over the top or just being about nonsense (oreos once a week) and when he doesn't do that they're just duds (i.e. the other night with Daniel Craig at a car rental).
There's nothing wrong with being an over the top laughing guy. We go to stand-up shows all the time and most times I'm the loudest (not obnoxious, I'm just in the moment and love the craft) laugher in the room. It's just that Julia Roberts, Mickey Rourke, and Mo'ne Davis aren't THAT funny. Especially coming off of a pre-interview and anecdotes that you were given hours before.
Watched the clip of him and Jennifer Lawrence sharing embarassing moments; I can't really stand either of them to be honest. What does Jimmy's real laugh sound like?
You don't want those people to feel like they're bombing out there. But, in a way, over-laughing can make if worse. Jimmy is used to a stage, so maybe he feels he has to over do it so the live audience will see it and be into it. Whatever!
