It's been three years for me, despite being told that I'd be on a 6 month review schedule instead of 12 months so I could get up to speed faster. Yeah, I realize that I should be thankful to have a job, blah blah blah.....but I don't appreicate being told one thing, and the opposite happening with no explanation. Grrrrrrrr....I am jaded and bitter. So, how long has it been for you, and how bitter are you?
my last raise/promotion could have been a few weeks ago. i'm still very bitter. hoop-t, when they actually do give you a raise, make sure that you take it.
Not that kind of 'raise', YoYao. I got a "raise" last month. It was a whopping 3% raise. That being said, I'm damn glad to have this stinkin' job in the first place. I think of that on Sunday when I see the want ads. They used to be 4 sections, now it's more like 4 pages.
The beginning of the year. I guess I've had a raise every year since getting out of college, though one year was such a pittance, it didn't really count. I suppose I'm not saying anything that will make you feel any better about it. I don't think you should just be happy to have a job. Three years without a raise just sucks and cannot be justified (unless they mean, "you should be happy you have a job because you suck and we should fire you.").
I agree with drummer...even though it goes against my innermost feelings, I believe that with this economy, everyone should feel lucky if they do have a job, especially in IT. The Sunday Jobs section in the Chronicle is the thinnest jobs section I have ever seen. I have friends that have been out of work going on two years. This is the worst I have ever seen the job market for IT.
I am happy and thankful I have a job. The problem I have with it is I am in a new group that is largely successful for launching a new product line in the North American market. I am one of three sales guys doing this, along with a group of technical support folks and engineers. What does this mean? Well, the price tag on this new product line is much less, my sales quota is still the same, and the comp plan is still the same. I am working twice as hard, making half the commission or less, and won't hit quota even though I'll sell a bunch of these systems. That all adds to the fact that I was PROMISED more frequent performance/merit raises to get my base salary up to speed.
If you are in IT you need to think about another career. It is getting easier and easier to outsource IT management, and PC's are easier and easier to manage without an IT professional. IT management is only needed at big companies.....at small ones like mine 20-50 people you don't need one.... And that is where the majority of new job creation is happening. DD
I have a union contract. I know when my raises are coming, and how much. If it's not fair, I will stand with my union brothers and collectively bargain for equal treatment. I love the security that comes with union fellowship.
We receive 2 raises a year, one in April which is performance based {2-3 %} and one in Oct which is a cost of living increase {normally 2%} Like the rest if you I am just happy to have a job at this point and would be happy to give up the raise if it meant stability for my employment. As some of you know I work at the UPRR in Omaha, Ne and we have a very shaky employment record and have been known to lay thousands off at any given time just to make the guys upstairs a larger bonus {personel rant}. We recently laid off 120 people from the IT group as a large portion of the group`s projects were outsourced to a company in India. If it can be outsourced is being targeted for a study to research the feasibility of doing so.
Sadly, I have never experienced the joy of getting a raise in my professional life. I have gotten really, really, REALLY nice bonuses though.
how long does the THANKFUL for a JOB thing suppose to last Getting raped and pillaged is ok . .. because someone else doesn't even get that . . .BTW what's a raise! Rocket River
I got my usual annual 4ish % last month - which I'm happy for since the Co is not doing all that well. Sad thing is I want to find another job but now is not a good time to look.
I'm in IT, and happy to have a job. But I don't know how long it will last (the company is up for sale). When it's over, I won't spend much time looking for something else in IT. It will suck to start over because I make pretty good money, but I don't want to compete with everyone and their cousin for the next crappy job. I
I got a 3% raise. Quit. Found another job for substantially higher pay. However, I have to move to Connecticut where it's much more expensive to live. Net Effect: I got no raise but a career path with more opportunity.
