I agree, it was a bit of a let down for me as well but in terms of just talent as a guitar player, there's no doubt he will be on this list if not already. This guy is pretty incredible live.

^^^^^ There IS a reason for having a SRV's statue!!! Spoiler He was a Baaaaaaaaad Man!!! ....... ....... ......
My favorite is Eric Johnson but lets not forget Larry Coryell from Galveston. Amazing Jazz guitar player who played with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia before being replaced by Al Dimeola due to substance abuse issues.
Off the top of my head - Johnny Winter Jimmie (not Stevie) Vaughn Tim Kerr (Big Boys) Billy Gibbons - his early stuff is the real deal
I honestly can't believe I had to get that far into the thread before I saw his name! I mean, when Hendrix has you as his favorite, that's major praise!
Gibbons might be suffering from being associated with the synthesizer pop rock of the 80s. Most people remember him for that and don't necessarily think of him as a guitar bad ass. That's unfortunate.
Haven't heard any of his new solo album yet, not even sure if it's out. He did a good interview with Texas Monthly recently, it's on youtube. Touring solo this winter, I'll try to catch the show at ACL or maybe Cullen Hall in Htown.
This is for Buck Turgidson and all the other folks who don't know Trey Anastasio is from Texas and he misses it. This is Austin 2015 when Trey mentions his Texas heritage...play this speech, then jump forward to the next vid that led up to him talking about Texas. "Trey, Coming back to Texas" <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/no9alXlStts?rel=0&start=1962" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> And this is Wolfman's Brother right before the vid above...just to put it all into perspective. This is the final jam part of WB...wait for it... in about 60 seconds Trey shows his guitar... he doesn't move much,,,but you get to see his fingers in this vid, for 6 minutes of more complexity. I love Trey. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/no9alXlStts?rel=0&start=1535" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> And WB isn't even one of my top 10 Phish songs. Just posting it as it came before his speech about Texas
