umm, shandon anderson is now doubling as "The Invisible Man".

his contract and the "terms" of him being a starter are ridiculous. equally ridiculous is the notion that no matter how badly he plays we have to sign him to a fat contract to reward him for not being able to shoot, dribble or penetrate for the past year two years.

what if we do draft an athletic sf in this draft. a sf capable of starting immediately? oops, should we have to start shandon, knowing damn well cuttino is twice the player? of course not.

the only solution i see is to sign and trade shandon in the offseason. if we can sell someone, possibly LA or Portland or Philly that they need an athletic, defensive minded small forward, we might be able to get rid of shandon. this way we fulfill our end of the deal (we gave him his big check), we save face with the rest of the nba (we keep our word), we get rid of a guy without offensive nuts (pardon the phrase), and we keep out of this silly inconvenience of always HAVING to start shandon.

shandon, it's been nice, but you're a square peg and this is a round hole.

I think he's a good player. The only guy on this team that can play any 1-on-1 defense.

Shandon is a quality guy to have come OFF THE BENCH. He should not be a starting 2-guard in the NBA.

jerin.. I totally agree with your assessment of Joe Forte.

I think he's going to be a NBA stud for years to come.

I would love to see Forte on the Rockets.

    um,

last time i checked we had a starting 2 guard in cat.

what we need is a 3. and if we get one, shandy has to go to the bench or out of the league. seeing as how he's insistent on starting, i'd say buh-bye.

do i like joe forte? HELL YES. dude's got mad game. but why draft him when you have cat. let me say it again...

shandon's game simply doesn't fit. what i'd suggest is a battier type. or even, shareef - if it did not compromise our cap room.

my question is...do we sign and trade shandon this summer, or do we deal with possible dissention after he's buried on the bench ala stacey augmon in portland?

Totally disagree with ya'lls assessment of Joe Forte. If he becomes anything better than possibly a suitable starter in the NBA, I would be SHOCKED. I don't think he's good enough to cut it at the next level. He's undersized, lacks exceptional quickness, lacks athleticism, and has good skills. He's the Miles Simon of college basketball right now. And that means he'll will be marginal at best in the NBA. He's got a decent stroke from long range. Has a nice in between game. But I don't think he can get off his own shot at the next level.

let me be a little more direct...

do you want another matt maloney?

think about it! shandon anderson, more than likely, will exercise his option and stay here in houston at the end of the season. we "owe" it to him, according to the "terms" of the current contract, to "reward" him for his services past. so, how to reward him? with a phat contract around the mobley range, for a long amount of time. this is known not only to the rockets and the "clutchcity bbs". it is also known by the players (read: potential free agents) in the nba.

well, that all sounds good and fine, except for one thing: shandon anderson, for all his "decent" one-on-one defensive capabilities, does NOT fit in with this team. not with the offensive scheme, definitely. and he's, apparently, not what you'd call the VOCAL defensive leader of the team. he can't shoot. he can't dribble. he can't create. he can't penetrate. does anyone else see the problem with this, or all we all too erect over the prospect of getting gerald wallace or terrance morris or shane battier or whoever?

meanwhile, back at the ranch, we get this prolific, perfect sf and shandon (if we're halfway intelligent) is mired on the pine. permanently. make NO MISTAKE, barring injury, it would be permanently. and, IMO, i have a huge qualm with paying a guy mobley like numbers to sit on the bench for 35 minutes per game. oh, what, we're already doing that? you mean kelvin cato? well at least there's the possibility of trading cato, since he's 7'0" and athletic. the market just isn't the same for a lawrence moten clone like shandon.

so what do we do with this square peg? do we sign and trade him this summer? or do we pay him to replace kelvin cato's spot as "The One Rocket I Think Is Overpaid" ?

Previous occupants have included: Matt Maloney, Kelvin Cato, Brent Price, etc.

what i'm saying is that we can nip this **** in the bud! sign and trade his ass this summer, and eliminate the "Player We're Paying, But Isn't Playing". all this and we can save face.

so, please, drop the 2001 NBA Draft Erection date from your heads and start thinking about how to get rid of shandon (who obviously doesn't fit in here) and still save face with the NBA Players....

Shandon Anderson DOES fit with this team, the Rockets just aren't able to use him correctly just yet. He is a great defender, a good slasher and a solid mid-range jumper. Shandon is a SF! I use to think he could play SG, but he seem more comfortable at SF. He can run the floor well, and he isn't to small. He is pretty much the same height as Mario Elie, and Micheal Finley, and guys like that. And there is no way we're going to get someone like Forte who will go in the top 5 if he comes out. Definitely keep Shandon, move him to SF and concentrate exclusively on big men.

Regretfully, I must agree with you verse. Shandon cannot remain the full-time starter at SF, not if the Rockets want to develop into a contender.

SF should be the first priority for the Rockets this off-season. And not just a role-playing SF, but a well-rounded player with the potential to develop into a star and difference-maker. Regardless of the C or PF obtained through the draft or free agency, the Rockets' will still be a perimeter-oriented team. There won't be a Shaq, Duncan, or even Ike Austin in this draft or in the market, and CWebb looks more unlikely each day. Obtaining a SF with the characteristics listed above will further enhance the Rockets' perimeter and play to their strength.

I must agree with RocksMillenium. A lot of our problems will be fixed when we get a center that rebounds. Shandon will fit fine at SF when we get a rebounding big man. Then, the guards won't have to get all the rebounds, and the fast break will be easier to start. That is where you will see Shan handle his business on offense.

SA is still one of the most under appreciated and underrated guys in the NBA.
The guy isn't going to ask for the moon, though. The Rockets need guys who can get in your face and D up ,like SFR and RM
mentioned. He might not create off the dribble and make highlight films, but he is part of the glue that keeps this team together now and will in the future..
Shandon is a very good stabilizing inluence for Steve and Cuttino. The professionalism he brings on and off the court can't be understated. He busts his butt and sets a good example, while keeping his mouth shut for the most part.Sure there will be some frustration on his part, but he realizes this team is putting the pieces together to win a title.
The guy can move without the ball with the best and eventually ,as Steve grows,we should reap the benefits from that aspect of his game. The more time they play togetrher the better.
They don't post him up that much either, which is one of his specialties.Rudy hasnt been able to fully take advantage of his capabilities, but sure knows what he can do and so does SA.SA is a seasoned pro and realizes that these guys need to develop.
I,personally think we need more defensive stoppers..and not just on the frontline.Lets keep putting the pieces together.I see Shandon as a perfect fit for now and when this team matures. He needs to be signed and it shouldn't be an outrageous contract.Rudy and CD have a vision for this team in the long run and Shandon is smart enough to realize this.He wants to win a title and turned down a lot more money w/the Jazz to leave.Once our internal problems associated with the end of Dream's career are over, strategy on the court is set,and the personell direction is revealed,I believe we see how big he is to the overall chemistry of this team.Whether he starts or comes off the bench he needs to be resigned ASAP.

I don't see the big problem with 'having' to start Shandon right now. Who else should we be starting? Wiz? Bullard? Langhi? If he doesn't 'fit' with 'this' team, I can think of a couple of reasons why:

    1) He's the only guy on the team that cares about playing defense. This definitely does not fit.

    2) He's great at moving without the ball, and he's playing with guards who don't know how to pass. This also doesn't fit with this team.

    3) He can take his man down low on occasion and post up effectively when he has a size advantage, but he's playing with guards who like to waive people out of the post so they can 'iso'. This also does not fit.

    4) He's great on the fast break, and he's on a team that doesn't know how (particularly the guards) to fast break. This doesn't fit either.

So, it looks like Shandon doesn't 'fit' in much the same way Pippen didn't fit. The big difference is the Rockets have the personnel to make Shandon fit perfectly, whereas they may not have with Pippen. They just either refuse to (don't play defense, waive him out of the post) or are not capable (don't know how to pass, don't know how to run the break). It seems to me that these problems are correctable, and the Rockets will be a better team (and Shandon a better player) when they are.

As far as the future and having to worry about 'drafting a stud SF', and still having to pay Shandon, I don't see the problem unless Grant Hill is coming out again and the Rockets have a shot at him. I just don't see the need for another perimeter player on the Rockets. And I don't know why anyone would have not learned their lesson yet about getting excited for Rockets' drafts. We all know they're just going to select another Jason Collier next year and everybody will be crushed because they didn't select a guy with 'mad hops'.

I agree with Freak. The people that post in this bbs seem to want a superstar in every freakin position.
    PG-Stevie
    SG-Iverson
    SF-SAR
    PF-Chris Webber
    C-Shaq
This ain't gonna happen. Never. And furthermore shouldn't happen. We should all remember what it's like to have too many "stars". There are such a thing as role-players. Right now Shandon is the best option we have at SF. He is the only person that even attempts defence. However, I do agree with verse in that I wish he would be more of a vocal leader in that department.
Now that I've said that. My opinion of Shandy's role with the future of this team revolves around how expensive he will be next year. As I said before Shandon is a role-player, nothing more. And he should be paid accordingly.

    Dogbelly & RocksMillenium:

I have to disagree. When I assess Shandon’s good points, I think: Lawrence Moten w/a little more skill.

All his strengths sound good – for a backup sf. For a 8th/9th man off the bench. And I see a major problem in paying a guy mobley-esque numbers to play only 10-15 minutes per game.

Dogbelly, you say shandon’s best assets are on display on the break? Well, if that’s the case, we’re in trouble. Your starting sf should not be exclusively a ‘fastbreak-I’m-open’ type player. That’s a backup player if I ever heard of one. Especially at the kind of money he’ll be due for his “services rendered.” Services like not being able to dribble and shoot (fundamentals if you ask me). I think your expectations are far too low, Dogbelly. What are we going to do come playoff time when fastbreaks are as rare as a Shandon Anderson 3 pointer? Playoff basketball requires a good halfcourt offense.

IMO, we need to get rid of shandon ASAP. I do NOT look forward to paying shandon ~$5,000,000 per season for the next few years so he can sit on his kiester.

    hardwood:

shandon isn’t even the most underrated guy on our team. Shandon’s rap sheet is on the mark, IMO. Most people know he plays Ok defense. Everyone knows he can’t shoot. Most people know he finishes ok. Everyone knows he has a pretty good post game for a guard. Where’s the underrated part? The guy is limited and the whole league knows it. Maybe if he could dribble or stick an open j he’d get more credit. I don’t mean highlight dribbling, either. I mean basic left/right, str8 forward, through traffic dribbling.

    Btw,

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the importance of defense. however, I believe our problem lie with defensive rotations, not 1 on 1 defense.

    TheFreak:

I don’t mind him starting “right now”. But he is not the starting sf of the future for the rox. Not by a long shot (literally. as in 18+ feet).

    1) he is not the only person who cares about defense. watch a little closer. I see steve running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I see cuttino covering vince carter and outplaying him. I see mo taylor LEADING THE TEAM IN CHARGES DRAWN. I see kelvin cato on the IR (oh, nevermind that one [IMG]).
    2) He does move well without the ball. Granted. But there often is more to a ½ court set than Shandon cutting. Not saying that is a fault of shandon’s. just saying that often the point (or whoever) sees something else (i.e. a better option)
    3) I’d rather have a steve or cat drive than ANY guard posting up as the first option. They create an automatic double/triple team. Shandon does not. What we need is a good shooter from that spot. Not a primarily post up player.
    4) The guards are working on the fast break. It would help, however, if we had a better rebounding center. Or just a center that wants to play with us. [IMG]

Have you not noticed that we look like world beaters when the 3 is hitting his shot? It don’t matter if it’s the wiz, the bull, or the brick (shan). If they hit, we’re the ****.

In a half court offense predicated around steve and cat’s driving ability, shandon is practically useless. In a half court offense predicated around man motion, shandon becomes one-dimensional (slashing). We need a better shooter at the spot. One who can – on occasion – create his own shot. More importantly, though, IMO is to have one who can shoot 46-47% and ~39% from 3pt range. And, yes, with the d of shandon (which I don’t see as being as stifling as everyone else seems to think).

    p.s. TheFreak:

I’m not one to look for the player with “mad hops”. I like system players. Don’t read me so dismissively, please. I just happen to think that shandon ONLY fits OUR system as a backup. And I don’t like paying backups $4-5million annually for an extended period. We could get stacey augmon for that. OOPS, we already had him….

This team goes as Anderson and Walt Williams go. Why, I don't know, but when one of those two are playing well, we win.

Everyone keeps saying we need to focus on a 3 in the draft: why? This year, our problem has been a lack of big people, not small people... We need *tall*, *defensive* Centers and Power Forwards. If we can get two 6-10 guys at PF and C, then Shandon's size becomes a much smaller factor and he becomes the ideal SF, in my opinion.

As TheFreak said, the Rockets just have to learn how to utilize him correctly.

i'm not asking for a superstar. i'm asking for the robert horry type of sf from 5 years ago.

tall, rangy, good shooter, good rebounder.

i don't care about having superstars. we already have enough. i just want players that fit our system. that's why rudy keeps going for wizards and bullards and langhis and the like. it's because they're tall (relatively) and can shoot. now if we could just get that tall shooter with some athletic ability, we'd be set at 4 positions (pg, sg, sf, pf) with only a defensive, shot rejecting, rebounding 5 to fill.

do you understand what i mean?

think real long and hard about the first two sentences you wrote. now you see my point.
