What do you all think of Mel Gibson's "The Passion" coming out in 2004 based on the final 12 hours of Jesus's life. The fact that there will be NO english nor subititles and it has already caused a stir in Hollywood about the content? Here is more info on the movie: http://www.passion-movie.com/english/ Trailer
Its going to be in Latin, i think it would be interesting to watch, i wouldnt understand most the words but still be a interesting thing to watch
I didnt realize that it would not have any subtitles. I understand what kind of feel they are trying to duplicate using Latin but what good is a film when you dont understand the dialoge at all.
There was an article about it in the Chronicle a few days ago. The movie is in Latin and Aramaic (language believed to be spoken by Jesus and his followers). The Chronicle article mentioned that they are still debating on whether or not to include subtitles in the movie. I hope they do. The idea not to include subtitles might seem like a novelty in the beginning, but it will hurt the film in the long run.
I love actors who work for the art. Obviously not going to make too much money in the Box office but is a labor or love.
[rant]It's probably causing a stir in Hollywood because it isn't based on a 70's TV show and it isn't a sequel to a "blockbuster" from last summer. I will go see this movie even though it doesn't have a hot new hip-hop soundtrack. I'm all for any movie that requires actual thinking. A nice change of pace from the mindless dribble that's been littering movie screens over the last few years.[/rant]
Already Jewish groups are concerned that this movie will stoke the fires of anti-Semitism all around the world, and probably with good reason. Since the Middle Ages, prejudice against the Jews has been predominantly based on the idea that they were "Christ-killers," yet a look at the historical record complicates that. If you look at some contemporary histories, such as Josephus' "Jewish War," you see that Pontius Pilate was a very harsh and punitive ruler in Judea. If anything, he was one of the more cruel ones. The picture we see of Pilate in the Gospels -- of an almost pacifistic guy who "washes his hands of it all" when the Jews call for the death of Jesus, is probably historically false. Why, then, does the Bible portray him this way? Because when the Gospels were written (several decades after the death of Jesus), the Romans were still in power and the Gospel writers didn't want to offend them by making the Roman governor (Pilate) look bad. So as I've said, if you go way back into European history, you'll see that many of the prejudices against Jews were based on the premise that they'd called for Christ's death. All sorts of associated myths sprang up, such as the "blood libel," which stated that the Jews baked the blood of Christian children into their Passover matzohs. It represented a logical leap: if they could kill the Son of God, they could certainly butcher innocent Christian children. So I'm wondering if "The Passion" will explore any of these historical ambiguities, or if it'll simply go straightforward with the account presented in the Bible, where the Jews are wholly to blame for Christ's sufferings.
Well we all kinda know what is happening so dialogue isn't that important to me in a film like this. It's kinda like when Mel Gibson did Hamlet and the dialouge was straight from Shakespeare. If you've read it or have an little knowledge of the story it is easy to keep up with it. BTW - I thought the Romans killed Jesus!!!
If I remember correctly...the Pharisees(high priests) were the ones calling for the death of Jesus. the Romans were just the government at that time.. The priests and the people were Jewish. It's been a long time tho, please correct me if my memory is failing..
omg its a movie... if its in latin, LEARN latin if it means that much to you. otherwise get over it and read a book instead of watching movies to supplement your spiritual enlightenment. ps. no one is complaining about this thread....and i mean POST script in the biggest way sounds good and original
Why the hell would you name the movie "The Passion," an English word, if you weren't even going to have subtitles in English? Is the real name to the movie whatever that translates into in Aramaic or something? Even then, why bother translating the title and subsequently targeting an English audience in the first place?
can't. freaking. wait. this is honestly the movie i am most anticipating...one of the most I've ever anticipated. Stickfigure -- you say the "pacifist" role of Pilate is probably historically false??? why??? let me also clear up one thing...most Christians place the blame for Christ's suffering squarely on themselves. most of us believe that God's love for us despite our sinful nature led Him to deliver Jesus as a sacrifice for OUR sins. i have never once considered blame for any people other than me, first...and humanity as a whole, second...for the pain of Jesus Christ on the cross. yes..there are fringe elements who still today seek to cast blame...and don't tell me about Augustine or others...i know all that...my point is that since the reformation, the idea has been pretty squarely planted that all responsibility for the suffering of the savior belongs to the saved.
It's based upon the gospels, therefore there is nothing new. However, the story is told harshly, unlike the softer versions that have been done for the halo effect they cause viewers by virtue of their music and mood. This is going to look like MAD MAX and THE CRUCIFIXION. I find the objections by some Jewish groups to already be annoying. It's a story told in the book sold more than any other. Whether it is true is up to the reader or viewer to decide. People who already hate Jews will continue hating them. People who don't, won't. Is this going to cause gangs of Christians to go attack Jews? Gentile, please!
Yes..but the priests had decreed that he was blasphemous since he claimed to be the Son of God. ps.....since I havent been corrected yet, I'm going to assume that my recollection of the details is correct..
I cannot wait to see this movie. From what I have read so far the acting is brilliant.....cant wait!!
I don't see a problem with not having subtitles. I think it will be quite stirring to hear the dialogue of the gospels in the original languages in which they were spoken. By the way if you need a screenplay just open a Bible. The first four books of the New Testament should be what you are looking for.
