I have a 24 hour layover in Frankfurt. What is there to do, see, eat, etc? Will be there in 12 hours. TIA.

Take the train from the airport to central station and the red light district is walking distance. Buy some breadcrumbs to layout, so you'll have a way back to the train

I was there a week and a half ago and stumbled upon a wine festival in the city center area.

Take the train to Cologne (book on www.bahn.de) and check out the Dom (large cathedral). If you drink beer, try a "Koelsch". Walk around. Stay somewhere near the Rhine, e.g. at the Hyatt Cologne (although the GM is an ass, but that won't affect you - view is nice, and they have a pool/spa and pretty good breakfast). Just checked, it's available, and if you have 15k Hyatt Goldpassport points, you don't pay any cash. It's probably just a € 10-15 taxi ride from the main train station in Cologne. Next day, take the train back. I think Cologne is more interesting than Frankfurt. It's just about a 1 hour train ride each way, directly from the train station under the airport. I'd book first-class roundtrip train tickets, I don't think it's overly expensive, but you'll be fine in second class as well for that short train ride. It's actually partly a nice train ride, because it goes a bit along the river Rhine.

cologne reminds me of queens, ny because the center is kind of rough & grimy, and the people cold & rude……i would recommend taking the train to trier or nurnberg instead…..or freiburg if you don't mind a longer journey……frankfurt is very uninteresting and reminds me of cincinnati or pittsburgh

Yeah, Heidelberg would also be more interesting than Frankfurt.

I should have started this thread earlier. Unfortunately, I already booked a non-refundable room at the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport. Will be there before noon tomorrow (Saturday) until 10:30am Sunday. Is Cologne still worth a day trip? If there are late trains back directly to the airport, I'll consider it. Would like to visit the Rimowa flagship in Cologne.

fwiw: Cologne is pronounced Köln. After 6 months living in Germany, I learned early the proper German pronunciation, but had problems choosing my pronunciation to others/ex pats.

I blame it on the French.

ha! wow. If any clutchfans want a brush with excellence, bigtexxx will be staying at the Hyatt in Cologne this week.

The Sheraton at the Frankfurt airport is pretty blah, although that's probably to be expected for an airport hotel.

    Dusseldorf this weekend. Boo Köln.

heyp's advice is probably the most accurate...

Being that I'm mostly living in Munich, I found Frankfurt to be a dystopian/bizarro version of what could happen. I guess I shouldn't say more until after the OP's journey.

Still decent enough experience for 24 hours worth.

I also recommend the Maritim, which is walking distance from the Cathedral.

Koln or Cologne is gorgeous, go eat at a cafe by the Rhein river, that place is spectacular.

And, from what I hear the world's largest brothel just might be in Cologne too.

    :)
