I'm a YOF by clutch's definition. However, by watching every ROX game broadcast or focusing on Rox news, I know every Rox players and pretty much of Rox history. As YM is a Rocket, Rox will be 1st NBA team to support for me, next is Nets. If someday YM trade to some other teams or retire as Rocket, Rox won't be my 1st option very probably if Rox play as a lottery team, but they will be the 2nd or the 3rd. There are totally 29 (30 next year) NBA teams in the league, I will still count me a Rox fan then.
That's a bit harsh, room. The post is illustrative of something that's being forgotten. Despite the annoying elements of Yao's popularity, he will bring some fans into the fold. Perhaps, initially... they'll be YOF. But perhaps they'll eventually be Rockets fans.
you know guys.... haven has a point. sure, was it necessary to satrt a thread just to tell us when he could just as easily put something about it in a sig? Probably not.. but anytime a poster comes in not caring about anything but Yao and after a while gets hooked on the team instead...I would not consider this a bad thing. he may say now that he wont support the Rockets 1st if they play bad after Yao....but we all know how that goes..once you get hooked...even bad play wont keep you away for long. If that was the case...I would have never made it thru the 70's as a Rockets fanatic..
The judgmental and close-minded posters are the losers here. I suppose you were all "born into" this team, following it for noble reasons, waiting for the day you could come down hard on some fledgling fan for having a favorite player. How many thousands of fans did the Rockets gain with Hakeem-Only-Fans evolved into fans of the team? How many of us would have the same fervor for the Rockets if we hadn't won championships with him? Even among Houstonians, the winning converted countless Reluctant-Only-Fans to ClutchCity-Only-Fans, correct? Believe me, if the Rockets can win with Yao, millions of Yao-Only-Fans will bleed Rocket red for the rest of their lives.
Cool to hear that people are eventually going to become fans of the Rockets as a whole. Although....I should have known better than to click on this thread from it's obviousness in the title.
Excellent post, pcheung. I am at least as tired of some oldtimers labeling and degrading everyone who is just starting to become a Rockets fan because of Yao as of some of the so-called "Yao only fans". Can't we do away with that label once and for all?
The person who wrote it titled himself a YOF to begin with! As I have said many times before, I dont care why people support the Rockets at all. I've enjoyed reading all the interesting posts about Yao just as I have with every other member of the team. Anyway, to save myself from rambling, the subject of this thread comes up atleast oncea week, and if not that then it ends up kreeping into other threads when people disagree on issues and all they can do to find insult with someone is jump on the bandwagon and call them a YOF. However, in defence of ChairmenYao, he is a new poster and maybe he wasnt aware.....
ok I admit it... I was a Tim Breaux only fan at one point... but now I love the Rox with all my heart.
No worries. I hope ChairmenYao feels the same. I know the topic is beyond old, but every fan must start somewhere.
well said, and i agree completely. some of these "old-timers" need to step off their soap box and realize what kind of opportunity Yao brings. just cuz someone is a YOF now doesn't mean they won't be a die-hard rockets fan in the years to come. hell, most of these "old-timers" haven't been around much longer than some of the YOF's anyways.
