i dont know, but i think something weird is going on here. when someone else yawns it's like i lose control and i have to yawn too... whats up with that
I remember hearing something about this back in Junior High...not sure how true it is, but apparently when a person yawns, it's due to a lack of oxygen, so they end up taking in extra oxygen, which causes the person around them to yawn also due to the sudden lack of oxygen. Or this might have been one of my junior high hallucinations...
It's true -- I'm not sure the science behind it, but you are more likely to yawn if you see someone else do it. I just learned that last year from a coffee table book of weird factoids.
This has been proven... doubt oxygen has anything to do with it, but the power of suggestion triggers the yawning reflex. If people see it or think about it, they will feel the need to. Bet most of you will be yawning before you're done reading this thread.
Well, lets take a somewhat scientific approach to this. Do any of these make you want to yawn? http://www.findsounds.com/ISAPI/search.dll?keywords=yawn
maybe its psychological. like that "energy star" commercial - have you seen it? the one where the guy uses static electricity to run his whole house. has little conductors under the rug and everyone wears thick socks (even the dog). everytime i watch that, especially right around when the dog shakes, i get that fuzzy goosebump senstation as if i just got shocked.
I even yawn when I see my dog yawn. Weird. But she doesn't yawn when she sees me yawn. So, this affects humans and not dogs? Hmmmmm, interesting.... Did you also know that if you are yawning and someone puts their hand near your mouth, the yawn will immediately cease? Coincidence? I think not.
A common myth is that people yawn due to a lack of oxygen, but its your bodys way of relaxing or that it tired and wants to relax. think about it why do you yawn? you are tired, can you sleep when you are all keyed up? Also think about how you feel after you yawn, I am pretty relaxed myself. at least thats what some study found out. I think when you see someone else "relaxing" you want to relax also. I have also found that the only time I yawn after someone else is when I am tired. . . I wonder if that has anything to do with it. thats my two bits, I may be wrong on this though, wouldnt be the first time
