    Very well said.

Rebounding is about the position and timing.

i think yao can be a great rebounder in the league, but he has to try if he wants to be that

it seems like he can rebound like a mad man sometimes and those times are usually when it seems like he is trying harder and getting better position.

its all about effort and concentration for yao.

every player has a weakness: Ex: Duncan: freethrows, yao is maybe just not that good of a rebounder or maybe he just needs a little more time to learn...lay off the guy jess.

That's a pretty interesting stat. Curry only had 3 rebounds tonight so that goes with what you're saying. I've always thought that Yao actually does a decent job of boxing out his guy, even when he doesn't get that many rebounds.

Lets not forget that Chicago, although a sub-par team, does have the big men to rotate and keep fresh. If my memory serves me right they have two 7 footers and two more coming in at 6'9" and all of them can rebound. Rebounding, as stated before, isn't Yao's strong point nor has it been one of Mo's strong points. That leaves Cato and Spoon's 15 minutes. So the fact that we got outrebounded by the "freakin' bulls" isn't as bad as it seems. Though the general idea of the post I agree with that Yao does need to find a way to be more effective... but thats an ongoing trend. And I, along with many of you, believe it all comes down to being at least assertive if not aggressive. Or in Yao's case the lack there of.

You are exactly right. You cann't just see the numbers. The same as blocking shots.

It is the basic team defensive playing style that is preventing any indivadual getting a lot of rebounds. In Shaq, Duncan cases, they stay in the paint, not coming out to chalenge the midrange jumpers or penetrations. But in in JVG defensive system, or just in Yao Ming's natual team defense concept, he is required to come out. This is why he is out of the best position for rebounding all the time. Let's just call it unselfish team defense effort, instead of poor rebounding. Come on, guys...

On any given night, he's matched up with the likes of Rasho Nesterovic and Jeff Foster. I certainly hope he outrebounds them.

That really is an excellent, excellent point. Yao does spend a lot of time chasing guys on the pick and roll and helping.

    The problems I see

    Stamina
    Short Twitch muscles
    Timing
    Technique
    Weak arms
    Too tall (yes too tall)
Mentality (i.e. attitude of great rebounders)

He has impressed me with his rebound per game statistic but I know within me that he is not a great rebounder (at least not yet). He is also not a great shot blocker. He does not also pass very well off the double-team very well as advertised. But in spite of all that he is still my favorite player. I will give him 1-2 more years to divorce mediocrity and ascend to the next level of greatness and fulfill the promise.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the reason Yao doesn't get a lot of boards is because he's sealing off the other team's best rebounder thereby allowing other Rockets to get the board. It's no coincedence that several Rockets have upped their rebounding avgs with Yao in the line up.

Also, if you watch closely there are many times when Yao is in position to grab a board and allows a smaller Rocket to grab the ball for the simple reason that the smaller player can get the ball up court faster. Contrast that with SA where in many situations a smaller Spur will shy away from the ball allowing Duncan to grab the board.
