Well I've gone and read some past Yang Yi articles and interviews about Yao Ming on tom.com. It looks to me that either he's really Yao's great friend who is overconfident about Yao's ability or he's a hyperpole pundit ala Bill Walton. Some of his comments were quite unbelievable and sometimes frankly sounded quite rude. In one chat transcript Yang with net fans, 90% questions were about Yao and Yang commented that Yao would reach a higher level than Olajuwon and Yao would soon become No. 1 player of the team and then it's his teammates who fight to become the No. 2 and he said all this BEFORE Yao's played a minute of NBA basketball. I conclur that he's a just a attention seeker who is making money by using his "friendship" with Yao.
HP, my bad. I tried to be funny here. I read your posts on the other thread w.r.t. the Cat's interview. I actually tend to agree your takes on those overactions. I thought those "Chinese" interpretations may have rattled your nerve a little bit Don't take too seriously those English translations of Chinese medie reports w.r.t. Yao or any Rockets affairs. Journalism in China is a whole new thing or profession. I was actually irritated by those supposed Yao vs Yang Yi sh*t. Very un-professsional. If Yao indeed said those things to Yang, it's a huge media blunder and Yao should be punished so that he learns a hard lesseon. This would mean that the Team Yao sucks big time in their client services. If the Rockets organization holds double standards between the American media and the Chinese media, they must be condemned. It would be a shame to favor the Chinese media when the Rockets team is partially funded by the public fund. And it will bite them back at a later date. I remember you are a member of the fan council. I fully support you to raise this red flag to the Rockets organization. I believe all rational fans will support you. There is way too much Yao hype from all corners. As the beggist Yao fan, I think enough is enough. Let the kid play basketball. You haven't seen the "real stuff" yet from the Chinese media However, I have a broad collection of the Chinese media outlets that I read regularly. In general, the Chinese media is cooler and tougher on Yao Ming than the American media. Yes, that's right. I am serious. The Yang Yi guy's outlet is not the most professional one. Again, journalism in China has a long way to go. Just take it with grain of salt and be cool with it. Well, that's it. Guys like you need to be cool, all the time. With more than 10K registered fans, only a portion of them repetetively post those irritating and deviding posts. (oops, my sh*t on RT doesn't count, right?) I have no doubt many of them are of Chinese decent. But what can you do? Do I hold you to double standard here
jxu777, I knew you were joking with me, and please don't take my words as more than me just wanting to take the oppurtunity to rechallenge people to find a quote of a player mentioning rumored trades, as well as use the opportunity to mention The Onion plagerism again. I think I came off too fast in my typing to sound funny. But yeah, I admit that the Yang Yi stuff is getting annoying to me. That said, there are worse journalistic practices in the States...I should preface my detaste for Yao articles with saying they are like reading Dick Vitale drool over Duke alumn explaining why Brand isn't more involved in the offense by Odom and Miller. next time, I'll type slower when responding to you, since I didn't think enough to be funny last post. is there an uncool emoticon for me to use??
http://sports.tom.com/Archive/1019/1042/2003/3/7-35733.html Yang Yi has changed the interview a little bit. It seems he has known the impact of his previous interview.
Interesting. Can anyone mention what parts of the interview were changed from the previous one? Chris
Hot off the wire! Here is my translation of the changes Yang made to the interview: . . . . Yang Yi: After game, did girl make you holler? Yao Ming: No. American woman want 500 American dollars to love you long time. Yang Yi: Today you took your shirt off after the penalty kick. Yao Ming: Yeah, and after game Nike call to do commercial. But I show them middle finger. Yang Yi: How did you score so little at first? Yao Ming: I tried using lines from Barry White, who is one suave brother, like “I can’t get enough of your love, baby”, “you’re the first, the last, my everything”, and “I’m gonna love you just a little more baby.” But the lines come out like Chevy Chase and they tell me to go take a cold shower. . . . . Yang Yi: Doesn't matter if the rockets make the playoff or not, there must be an adjustment in the summer, to make the team more balanced. Yao Ming: Today Rudy T said if we don't win this one he is going to shake up the lineup. This years trade deadline already passed, guess we will have to wait until next season to seem some changes. Actually before the trade deadline, I heard they were going to use Mobley and Eddie to trade for Brand, but the deal did not happen because owner Sterling had never heard of Brand. . . . .
I read the piece on SportsWeekly. All the sensitive topics were gone. I bet Yang Yi or some of Ming's handlers visit this site. Shrimpie
Just leave these oh-so-smart fans alone. Just post the link so that we not-so-smart fans can read it and make our own judgement. Thanks in advance.
It is not the same interview. The author combined topics from both interviews after Detroit game and Toronto game.
Well, these two reports are quite different. In the previous interview arcicle, Yao talked about 20 things about the Detroit game. In this article, Yao talked about 2 things from each game with Detroit and Toronto. On the Toronto game, Yao talked about him defending Carter with 8 seconds left in the game. "He must thought I was the French guy (who Carter dunked over in 2000 Olympics)." Yao said. "He run pass Posey and towards me. I stood my ground and closed my eyes. I was telling myself, I am just going to stand here. Fly over me if you can, like in the 2000 Olympics. After the play, I opened my eyes and saw the basket did not go in. Fortunately I am 8 cm taller than the French guy.
What? I read an article in the Sacramento Bee to the same effect. The Chinese media is absolutely no worse than the American media, which has had a plethora of faulty information... have we really forgotten last summer that quickly? I have no idea what your point with the Cantonese-speaking Toronto announcers is, either. I watched the broadcast, including the cut-aways to the Cantonese-coverage, and had absolutely no idea what they were saying. Nothing news nor note-worthy about this. Yang Yi is an acknowledged journalist for one of the premier sites in China, who's built up a reputation over years as being a close confident to Yao Ming. He might not be Chris Berman, but he's at least a Stuart Scott.
Postolos said the official newspaper was wrong, that there are only preliminary discussions going on and nothing has been worked out. I also agree that the American media is faulty often, but they would never report that China is moving their capitol city just because The Onion reported it. I also disagree with any ascertion that China newspapers were correct that Wang caused Yao to not be able to sign. I think that has been long since debunked. That was grounded in nonethingness. heech, I'm not trying to attack China here. I just have zero trust for any journalistic information that comes out regarding Yao Ming. Don't bother trying to convince me otherwise. The Wang thang and Yao supposedly mentioning a trade is enough to convince me for years to come. Yang Yi is using Yao Ming. i think it is pretty clear, and pretty common in US journalism, too. Howard Cosell used Muhammed Ali. It is not China vs US...it is a admonishment of Yao Ming reporting from journalists who are trying to capitalize on it. don't make me out to be some uncool racist.
here's the article about the exhibition http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/rox/1806837 In typical fashion, China announces things based on what they want, thus "game on," when in reality, they still have to deal, since the NBA and the Rockets hold the trump cards now. Ironically, this is exactly the opposite of last summer where the Rockets were saying what they want, Yao Ming is coming, when in reality, the NBA still had to deal on TV rights. Can you not agree now that all the hangup was not about Wang, but was about who was going to show the Rockets games in China, and what they were going to have to pay the NBA. Curious also how Les signed the $5m beer sponsor deal with days of Yao being released.
how do you say "holy smoke" in Mandarin? The interview was in Mandarin I suppose? Maybe it's "WASSUP!!!", edited to make it rated G for general audience.
