But he is only the first option here and there depending on the whim of the Point Guard. He just cant be the Team Leader till Francis moves on. While Francis is still here, because of respect Yao Ming will never take over the leadership roll.

Man I'm really tired of people calling each other YOF and SOF, it seems so childish and stupid. Like two little kids fighting over which superhero they think is better.

Anyway, I like how Yao is getting really cocky. I want him to show some of that cockyness on the court and just pound the ball in and make his defenders look stupid.

Also we forget that even if some of u guys hate SF. Hes a major factor to win against the lakers. Without him, we would not be able to win against the Lakers. I think hell step up big in the playoffs.

There's a difference between "cocky" and confident. Yao is a humble person to me.
But in the NBA (now anyway) the mentality would be "you don't dunk on him, he will dunk on you", so i don't mind to see Yao's getting cocky (if he is)
Thanks for the translation! Great job Choujie

you're not reading the whole sentance man, try again..

The question is clearly stating that ONCE Yao becomes 'better and better' he'll be the MAN on the team. Just that. Not do you think you're better than Steve now? He makes it clear that Steve and Yao are friends and asks if, and when, Yao reaches his peak potential and is truly a dominant player will his relationship with steve change. Yao replies:

This says that he and steve are TRUE friends and asks if the interviewer thinks they have problems now. Yao is not disrespecting Steve. Yao is also not denying that he has the potential to become the best player on the team (if not the league). If Yao responded any other way we'd have cause to worry, he has to have that kind of confidence or he'll never reach his peak.

If this were a Shaq and Kobe situation that would be a dangerous question, but with the rockets stars neither has had success without the other. Success being playoff appearances and winning once they get there. Neither would be in the playoffs now without the other and they seem to acknowledge this every time they're interviewed. The Yao and Steve only business needs to stop, everybody is looking for demons when there aren't any and are shooting off into the dark at the slightest noise.

It's good you bring this up.

Actually, this question should be translated a little differently.

    ¶¡£ºËµÍêÄãµÄ¶ÔÊÖ£¬ÎÊÒ»¸ö¹ØÓÚÅóÓѵÄÎÊÌâ¡£Ðí¶àÈ˶¼Ëµ£¬ÒòΪÄãÏÖÔÚÔ½À´Ô½Ç¿£¬ËùÓÐÈ˶¼ÈÏΪÄãÒªÌæ´ú¸¥ÀÊÎ÷˹³ÉΪ»ð¼ýµÄÀϴ󣬶øÕâÊÇ·ñÓ°ÏìÄãÃǵĹØϵ¡£

    Translation:
Q: We have talked about your opponents. Now i have a question about friend. Many people say, because NOW you have been better and better, all the people think you should replace SF to be the man on the team. Will this affect your relationship?

He is not asking ONCE, he is asking NOW.

choujie pls correct me if you think i am wrong.

I think it's "you will" instead of "you should".

I see, well that does change the nature of the question somewhat. That would be the problem with translations into English, the words don't always come out right.

Even with this new translation I still don't find it disrespectful of Yao not to disagree if for no other reason than he is speaking with Chinese media and therefor all of his countrymen.

Didn't JVG state when he was hired that he would want to move the offense from inside out and thus through Yao?
Last year Yao was about all the media has talked when it came to the Rockets, he brought the team back into public awareness. Now with the playoffs its Yao Ming and the Rockets meet Shaq and Kobe on the previews. I don't know how it is in the locker room but in the media Yao is already the man.
Yao is bringing thousands of people to Rockets games that aren't even fans of the team, even in other cities. Why wouldn't one see Yao as the man? Every announcer refers to him as Shaqs heir apparent, high praise for someone in his rookie year.

Back to the point though. I don't think Steve is unrealistic enough to have any issue with his Yao's response. There really isn't a good reply to such a question that makes everybody happy. Yao has to show confidence, he has to face up to an entire nation of people who barely concern themselves with his teammates beyond how they compliment Yao.

Basically all this typing is a long drawn out way of saying I understand Yao's response and expect that Steve can too because so long as they're winning I doubt either one cares who is the proverbial 'Man'.

Well. It's really hard to tell. Each of following is possible:
    you will
    you should
    you want to

anyway, forget it. the realy playoffs will start in two and half hours.

    How about

Yao: "we're friends one way or the other. It's not for me or him to decide who The Man is on this team. That's for JVG to decide, and regardless of what happens, me and SF will always have a good relationship."

If Yao says he isnt the man, people will only say he isnt a leader and doesnt wanna lead, if he says he is, then people will say he's being cocky. All he is doing is side stepping the question. Give it up with the YOF SOF crap.
